I spent two nights (23 & 24 January 2014) in the Hotel NH Almenara and it was not what I was expecting. I hadn't been to the region before and selected the hotel as it was based nearby to where friends that I was visiting live. Following an early morning flight from Dublin (DUB) to Malaga (AGP) we drove in a hired car from the airport to Sotogrande which took just over one hour.
I didn't know until I arrived in the Hotel NH Almenara that this hotel is not a traditional hotel in terms of it being one building incorporating rooms and amenities but rather a central building that houses the reception, bar, breakfast room etc. and all the guest accommodation is made up of series of bungalows and townhouses situated around a large campus. We were staying in a bungalow (218). The bungalows are self-contained and very impressive consisting of a large bedroom, bathroom and private terrace. From what I could see, all the bungalows are interconnected and can be adapted to be two bedroomed/family accommodation. Dining options in the Hotel NH Almenara were limited so we drove into Sotogrande and ate in a very fine seafood restaurant (reviewed separately).
The bed was very large and very comfortable. The bathroom is stocked with some of the nicest wash products I have used for a long time (I especially liked the orange scented shampoo/shower gel). The water pressure in the shower was FANTASTIC which was a nice treat. Breakfast was a very fine affair with something for everyone. A choice of cereals, fruits, cold cuts or a cooked breakfast were all available. The breakfast room were very friendly but not too intrusive. The whole resort has a very quiet feel and the stillness is only disturbed by the occasional hum of a battery operated golf buggy.
My only complaint is, and it is a small one and not unique to the Hotel NH Almenara, is the fact that the room did not have an iron and ironing board. That said, I phoned reception and they sent one over but it was a very cheap iron and the cover on the ironing board was not thick enough to prevent an imprint of the metal frame being left on everything that was ironed. All this said, I enjoyed the Hotel NH Almenara TOTALLY and would have no reservation recommending the hotel and I would love to return again some time soon. The Hotel NH Almenara is a little bit of Heaven; in Southern Spain...
