“New Experience in Tlaquepaque”
Reviewed 21 February 2014

Since we were planning one night in Tlaquepaque the day we arrived, we decided to try something new. Upon arriving, the owners were very accommodating with our reservation and their parking arrangements.

While not huge, our room was comfortable and small details like quality towels were certainly appreciated! The continental breakfast was a nice touch and we would definitely recommend this establishment to others.

I was in Tlaquepaque for just about an hour or so a few years back whilst staying in Ajijic & knew that one day I wanted to return. Well I had a chance just a couple of weeks ago & stayed At La Casa del Retono. When the taxi arrived at the door I was wondering if this really was the place so many people raved about as it is totally unassuming but once Luis opened the door a wonderful space appeared. The rooms are like cabins, decorated in Mexican style (which is what one would want in Mexico right??) but with the conveniences that we travellers usually desire. Attention to detail is a given. Afterwards I realized why it was in such good taste, the wife is an architect by training!! The grounds are wonderful especially after a busy day of sightseeing. So relaxing. The owners, including the mother, are all very kind & attentive yet leave you alone if you wish it. I am repeating what others said, but all the positive reviews are so spot on. This is a great alternative to staying right in GDL as not only is the B & B wonderful, but Tlaquepaque is fun & interesting.

Best "huevo rancheros" I have EVER eaten, and I live in California where there's lots of good Mexican food. Note: egg dishes at breakfast cost 25 pesos, the basic breakfast is free. Exceptionally helpful and friendly hosts, great location, reasonably priced.

There is not a lot more to add to the other reviewers' posts. While we were hesitant because we are not fans of B&B's and the potential company at the large breakfast table, we were relieved when we met the owners, the mother-in-law, the young daughter, and of course "Rabbit" the rabbit. We were fortunate that the communal breakfast was shared with Canadians. True to their Canadian stereotype, there were super friendly, curious, intelligent, and easy conversationalists.

Our room was located upstairs next to a veranda with a largish table and chairs, and a sofa. We took full advantage after a morning of shopping at Tonola. We walked into town, picked up drinks and snacks in the plaza area and tromped back to watch the night arrive while on the sofa.

The family is very thoughtful, curious, and willing to offer ideas and conversation in English and in Spanish. More importantly is that they maintain a line of respect for privacy. We never felt invaded. Our concern was with other travelers as we sometimes have experienced loud, strongly, opinionated people from another planet. We were lucky. And Rabbit came out to visit several times reminding us that as tourists, we are also guests.

Room Tip: We enjoyed the room near the balcony/veranda. Though it is not private, it has its own sitting area...

I spent 2 weeks here in November, and was delighted with my stay. My room was comfortable and clean, and the hotel is charming. In typical colonial style, the front wall is on the property line, and the door from the street opens to reveal the hidden gem inside. The owners, who live on property, are attentive without being intrusive. The enormous back garden is a bonus, and a great place to spend a quiet afternoon. A delicious homemade breakfast gets you started on a day seeing the sights of Tlaquepaque, Tonala, Guadalajara and environs, and there are dozens of dining options in the Centro. Tip: Call to make your reservation, rather than booking online. You'll be speaking directly with your hosts, and they will both give you the best deal and make sure your particular needs are addressed.

We stayed at La Casa del Retono for several days during July 2013. What a delight! If you like quiet, greenery and warm and friendly hosts, this is your place. Additionally, the design and decorative details will satisfy your aesthetic sense. We enjoyed our stay here very much, and appreciated the daily breakfast option, as well as Luis and his lovely wife, who guided us to great places.

This suited me for a number of reasons.

I wanted an inexpensive yet clean and comfortable place to stay in a good location. I got that.
I didn't need many amenities because I didn't need plan to be indoors much.
I liked the cosy and homey atmosphere without the overly involved or imposing feeling that can happen in such a place.
Breakfast was a bonus. Simple but adequate.
Although I was trying to keep costs down, I did not feel like I was making any significant compromises. I'd recommend it and gladly stay there again.
