Me and my boyfriend have just come back from two weeks in Zante where we stopped at Ionian blue studios this is a loverly place to stay as it has excellent views we stayed on the 4th floor this floor is fairly new and I would say the best floor to stop on! The maid service is not to standard as you don't get clean towels everyday like u would in a hotel or a fully cleaned room but apart from that can't complain! The pool area is loverly and kept clean all the time it was quite noisy with different groups of boys and girls but that's expected in peak season, the beach is just a 5min walk away from the apartments and is a loverly stretch of beach the sea was so warm there was no nesting at this time so u could go in the sea when u wanted we didn't see any tutles while we were out there! The main kalamaki stip is great for nightlife there are lots of nice restaurants to choose from me and my partner enjoyed the maharaja indian and chinese, also mermaids was very nice food! We eat at the posh resturant zakythi one night as Laurence is very passionate about this food and sells it well to u it's just a shame it was a tad expensive compared to the others but great food! it was a gorgeous holiday will defo go back to Zante :)

When booking we requested a high level room. On check-in we brought this to the attention of the receptionist who told us, "no choice" as we have the last vacant room in the property. Down the tunnel to the basement we went, only one of the ten lights in the dark corridor was working, they were replaced on the last of our 14 days stay, (good job we packed a torch) even in the day the tunnel to rooms A1 & A2 are very dark. We nick named our room the bunker & patio the dugout as this was also below ground level. Our room was small, under the stairs that led to reception so the noise of people going up and down was constant. The workings for the lift is also very close to these underground rooms and every time the lift was used the noise level was really quite bad. We asked the Thomson rep to move us, only to be told they have many complaints about these rooms but the owner has a "no move policy". the bunker was dark some days smelling of sewage other days strong disinfectant. Our clothes felt damp & took on the smell. We felt unsafe in the room at night so put the electric shutter down, this however posing a very serious fire risk with no escape if the electric failed and the fire was in the corridor. There is no breakfast bar, no table or chairs inside, we ate sitting on the bed. There is no settee or comfy chairs unlike other rooms.
It appears the rooms above ground are a good size with balconies, the property was very clean and well kept also in a very good location.
We paid full brochure price for a very sub standard / sub terranian room. Thomson are fully aware of these rooms and should either not let them to their customers or very heavily discount them. Our advice to you is DO NOT GAMBLE YOUR HOLIDAY you may, as we did, have your holiday ruined by being allocated one of these bunker rooms. They would seem to be converted stores as the adjacant rooms are marked 'STAFF ONLY' and we saw they have supplies in them.
Our only other small gripe was the fact you can only use the beach a maximum of 5 meters back from the sea as the Turtles are nesting, If you over-step the mark wardens move you. Nests are marked with a wooden tripod but they still wont let you use most of the beach.
Places we enjoyed to eat were Ambrosia, Heavens Kitchen, Yamas, Escape and Iguana Bar.

My husband and I travelled to Kalamaki and stayed at the Ionian Blue for a week in early June 2011. It was our 6th visit to Greek Islands so we feel quite well placed to comment on the hotel in comparisonto similarly priced hotels in Greece.

Plus points: On arrival the hotel appeared to be very well kept and clean with nice gardens. Also, it is within easy reach of Kalamaki strip and 100m or so to the Iguana bar whichis very nice (and cheap) for food and drinks. There is a good selection of utensils in the room and having a TV is handy for sky news (which we sometimes used to drown out the noise, see below)

Negative points: The walls are extremely thin and consequently the hotel seems very noisy as you can hear footsteps and every single tiny noise from other rooms including TVs and people who are up late/up early. There was a man snoring in another room during our stay and I could here it for the entire night - even my husband was woken and he is a very heavy sleeper! The towels were changed only twice during our stay and the second time was on our last day anyway - plus there were some stains on the towels. We complained and the staff weren't at all interested and wouldn't give us new towels. There is NEVER anyone on reception, you always have to go to the pool bar. We didn't once see anyone on reception for our entire stay. The drinks at the pool bar are expensive compared to other hotels (1.80 for a 250ml coke) and you are not allowed to take any of your own drinks to the pool.

All in all, I wouldn't recommend this hotel for the reasons above. I'm not one who usually writes reviews, and I recognise that we didn't pay a huge amount of money for the holiday but I think that there are better hotels for around the same price.

Also to say, Kalamaki is very quiet and a fair few bars have closed down so just be aware of this before booking. That said, taxis to Laganas are only 8 euros if you want a big night out.
