Family of 4. 2 adults and 2 Boys aged 15 and 13. from Llanelli S.Wales. We stayed from 25/07/2014 to 8/8/2014. We use trip advisor regularly before booking hotels and we booked this because of excellent reveiws, you got the odd person who would pick holes in something and mark it down and write stupid comments along the lines of "I didnt like the way a waiter looked at me" hence 3 star rating.
so none of all that nonsence here's my review.
from the very first foot stepped in to the arrivals lounge at Zante airport we were met by the hotel's own transport which was waiting to take us to the hotel. This is included as a courtesy. (A taxi costs €13.) its only a 5-10 min spin so you may be worried that being so close to the airport you'd get some Aircraft noise. Wrong, none whatsoever. The hotel reception staff were all extremely polite and we had a welcome drink on arrival. Our Room was excellent overlooking the pool, so we may be a bit biased in our reveiw compared to others who maybe didnt have such a room location. The room was large and the beds were soft and comfortable with extra pillows in the cupboard. free safe deposit and free wifi which we also managed to recieve on our balcony and all around the pool. The room was tastefully decorated with a flat screen TV (although there was nothing of interest on it in the way of English language programs, it didnt bother us one bit. Who wants to stay in and watch TV!!). The pool was excellent and large enough so it never got jammed, and the water was warm and clean, its quite deep ranging from around a 1m to 2.80m. Theres a small kids pool attached but cordoned off from the deeper pool. Theres also a Jacuzzi. another bonus was that there was always loungers available so none of the dawn raids getting up and putting down towels. (we were there at peak time summer dont forget). food was excellent in the restaurant and the waiting staff were all very friendly. Our two boys didnt find the food as appealing as my wife and I. Possibly they could have catered a bit better for children, have chips available maybe? But they did have on occasions a chef cooking chicken nuggets and chips. In saying this I heard that the chef was available to cook any meals especially for individual preferences so maybe I should have asked. We ordered a round of drinks with our evening meal, as you do, but on our last night when they were brought to our table we were informed they were "On the house" lovely touch but made an impression. Bar meals at lunch time around pool excellent size portions good quality and relatively cheap. Bar staff again all really nice and polite. Price of a beer at the pool €4 for a large Mythos. bottled beer avilable also.
the hotel really was top notch, all staff were really helpful and proffesional. We hired a car for a week. (do it before you go, we used holiday autos £249 for a week, Astra size car). Glad we did because Kalamaki not a great resort. Very spread out with very wide main road as you turn left out of hotel leading to Laganas which is 3KM away. Turn right out of hotel and narrow side road leads to the beach about 1/2 a mile away passing usual array of British bars and Greek restaurants intermingled with closed premises. Same in both directions. but the left turn leads to busier part of town. Kalamaki not really a resort I would return to but the Hotel was so good It may sway me in future. Got to mention a few bars/Restaurants which I enjoyed. Number 1 has to be "Zakanthi" restaurant and lounge bar on the road to Laganas, we ate out here, food was great and the setting is beatiful with trees hamocks and candles. Number 2, probably the "Chrystal Beach hotel" Beach bar overlooking Kalamaki beach lovely views but quiet as Kalamaki was in general. Number 3 probably the "Cave" bar across the road opposite Hotel. you can have a ride up to it on a Mini Moke, remember insect repellent as we were all suffering from mosquito bites after a night up there! Number 4, "Alexander The Great" just down road from hotel toward beach. Cheap night here and great staff.
Zante is great But hire a car. If i'd go back i'd go to Argassi, a busier resort less spread out at Argassi they have a sister hotel called "The Diana Palace" which i would probably head too, if its half as good as The Meandros" this would be a perfect holiday. But Argassi has got no beach.I love a nice beach our favourite has to be St Nicholas, which is through Argassi and onto Vassilikos peninsula, beautiful sand brilliant clear waters great beach bars/restaurants. Kalamaki beach dark sand clear waters nice but very windy on the days we spent there. also Turtle conservation very high on their list of priorities so a lot of the beach is restricted and closed at around 8pm with marshalls ensurining nobody walks on it. So my final comment on the hotel is, Hotel staff Brilliant, A+ Hotel cleanliness brilliant, A+ Hotel really was superb.A+, Kalamaki C.
Many Thanks to Hotel for a wonderful holiday from Phil, Sharon, Ryan and Thomas.
