Mitsis Summer Palace Beach Hotel
Ranked #18 of 39 Hotels in Kardamena
Reviewed 7 August 2013

We just returned from this "wonderful" place with my 2 children. It is terrible that this hotel can be ranked at 5-stars. Based on our experience it is not better then 3, in lots of term 2+. We ordered, reserved and PAYED for a 4-bed room, but what we got were 3 beds. After a very long discussion with the reception we got one more bed. This bed reminded me on the old times in the old pioneer camps (see the photo). We complaided that we haven't got thee promised fruit-basket and the special Greek whine indicated in the hotrel brochure, The answer was that the wine ran out and couple of hours later we got 1pc. of peach and one pc .of apple! The tap was dripping, the curtain hanging, there were boards under our bed to stabilize it.... Not enough chairs at the pools and at the beach (The first day we didn't know that you have to stand up at 7am to reserve your oun place, that's why we were walking around for hours between the beach and the pools to find a free place...) The AC switched off every hour because of some electricity problems. All the family members woke up because of the heat several times during the night. The very unfriendly receptionist promised us to fix it... but nothing happened... Otherwise the food was (the drinks horrible)ok and the exhausted waiters did their best. Please, never book holidays there... or only for your enemies!

We stayed at the Mitsis Summer Palace 25 July 2013. We were a family of 7, 4 adults and 3 children. We were very pleased with our rooms that were large family rooms situated around a courtyard with its own pool that we shared with a few other families, although there are about 7 pools on the complex including a beautiful indoor pool. The restaurant was lovely and the food was very good. Everything was fresh and replenished continually. The manager Tomos was wonderful and so helpful, one time he took my grand daughter to get her favourite meal of spaghetti bolognese. Demitrius was great fun playing with my grandson every night and Daria, who worked as the greeter was fantastic, we all fell in love with her especially my grand children who hugged her tightly every meal time and cried on the last day saying they were going to miss her so much. As you might have gathered from my ramblings, the staff were lovely. The rooms were spotlessly clean and towels changed daily. The maid noticed that my grand daughter had her birthday cards up and left a little bunch of flowers for her in a little glass. Such a lovely touch. Also the hotel arranged a birthday cake to be baked for her and that evening the restaurant managers, Daria, and even the chef gathered around her and delivered the fabulous cake and sang happy birthday. She was delighted.

We hired a car in Speedy Car Hire in Karadema which was a short bus journey away from the hotel. It's on the right as you get off the bus across the parking lot. George the proprietor, was very helpful and a great guy. We travelled around the Island to Paradise beach. Lovely but very hot! We also went to Kos Town and visited the ruins there. Well worth a look. Finally we visited Tingaki. The beach there was stunning and shallow for 100 yards or so. The children could safely play there. The trips over the mountains were precarious in parts but the views, wow they were amazing!

All in all a lovely holiday. I would say that the 5 star rating is probably a bit high and 4 star is closer for the hotel but it is in a beautiful setting with great staff, lovely food and I would recommend it.

Room Tip: We had rooms 348 and 347. They were brilliantly located right next to a pool.

This hotel states it is a five star, let me explain why I believe it is not, but armed with information you would know what to expect.
The staff are so helpful and smiley, the cleaning is fantastic, the cleaners and gardeners never stop and they always have a smile.
The hotel is way out of town and is the last in a huge Mitsis complex, probably has the most hills!!!!!!!, you pay 1 euro 20 for the buses to town and back that run till 9.50 in the morning and start again at 2pm. but they do run until about 11.30pm. the journey takes around 15 minutes Get a taxi and it will cost 10 Euros each way. The journey to town is treachous the roads are awfully bumpy and have hairpin bends a bit of a white knuckle ride. Kos is a great day out and takes about an hour from the hotel but well worth it.
The room was large but very dated, the beds were hard as rocks and the bathroom was tiny, the shower was at best second rate. The minibar was filled every two days with one bottle of water, two cokes, one orange one lemon and two beers, this was a room for 3 people for two days with temps in the high 30's.. The corridor was very noisy at all times of night and day, the cleaners were very adept at banging doors at 8am. When people walked down the corridor you could here everything as they were tiled and wide. Once in the rooms you could not hear what was going on in the next unless they were on the balcony. Air conditioning only worked if the key was in, so take a tip and remove the room key and leave the air conditiong key in, most people did this as the rings were streched.
All the pools except the indoor were salt water, this was fine but there were no showers to wash the salt off, the sunbed situation was as everywhere in high season get down at 6am to reserve one just as everybody else. The pool area was peaceful and clean however, the rooms except the pool rooms were miles away so if you needed the toilet forget it.
The bars were the worst feature, two bars in the evening for the whole hotel each with one barman, can you imagine the queues, lack of seating in the evenings, as the WIFI was in the main lobby along with the bars all the kids were on the computers so no place for anybody else. The drinks were also of a low standard except you did have glasses not plastic cups.
The eating areas were well controlled but people did like to push in to grab all their food, the variey of food was not good brussel sprouts for evening meal served as brussel sprout salad for lunch. However there was choice and drinks were served at the table. Outside area was the best as there was a breeze making it comfortable to eat. A must is the Greek restaraunt and the italian, the food was stunning as was the location. all table service. fantastic. You need to phone up early morning the day before you want to go, but it is well worth it, just phone reception and go back to sleep..
Entertainment is non existent except for the kids, but the animation team do seem to work hard, you can see them at the beachfront taking aerobic lessons and playing games. The beach is crowded and shingley but they do have a beach bar. You pay 20 euros to have beach towels changed here every two days.
Would I go to Kos again probably not, but I understand The Blue Domes is far superior in most aspects so would not be returning to Summer Palace, if you are catching a bus Summer Palace is the place as it is at the beginning and end of the run.
The hotel is exremely average and I question the five stars.

Room Tip: The room that have a poolside, although you have to climb a steep hill to eat and drink seem to be q...

The Mitsis Summer Palace is advertised as a five star hotel but priced as a four star. And still it is hardly value for money. The hotel has 2 major problems: food and space. In the main restaurant, the variety isn't the issue, it's the quality. It's bad. Despite the "Ultra" all inclusive formula, we left the hotel for dinner several times to enjoy a decent meal in Kos town (a 40 minute drive). The hotel has 2 other restaurants (Greek and Italian): Get up early to make a reservation in any of those. They are both - slightly - better than the main restaurant.
Space is the other problem: The view from the terraces is indeed wonderful but you will have to enjoy it standing most of the time. Impossible to find a chair between 7 and 11 PM. You can sit inside - if you enjoy heat and airport lounges. We bought our own wine and sat on our own terrace - without the view. Same story for the swimming pool: spectacular view, way too small for a hotel of this size. We used the pool of the Family Village (another Mitsis hotel in this resort) most of the time. The hotel also has an overcrowded pebble beach. Not recommended. Kos has nice beaches but you will need a car.
I have seen a lot of comments on the Russian guests on this site. They are true.
But the hotel also has positives: most of the staff are friendly (if you avoid the lobby bar); the hotel is old but well maintained - almost charming; rooms are clean.
In summary, we will not visit this hotel again nor will we recommend it to anyone. We will probably stay clear from all inclusive hotels in the future - that's how bad the food and even the drinks are.

Room Tip: Seaside - the view is spectacular.

Stayed there in July 2013. The hotel left a mixed impression. It is not too bad overall, but I'd not call it a five star. In more detail:

Pros:
1. The food in main restaurant. It is really nice. Good variety and taste, national cuisine present.
2. Well-planned territory, location and pools. Most rooms have a sea view.
3. Reception desk. Always friendly and responsive.
4. Lots of parking place - if you have or rent a car you can park it close to your room.
5. Rooms: big, well-furnished.
6. Security. They do really care.

Cons:
1. Service personnel in main restaurant. Do not actually hear or understand you. Trying to set up their own rules, e.g. one would not allow you to seat 3 persons (2 adults and a child) at 2 person table while other will do. This is offending when you have to leave the table and seat somewhere else while others don't. Their English is really poor. Teaspoons only at request.
2. Cleaning. Really bad. You'll not even have the floor in your room washed if you don't leave a tip. Constant mess with towels and blankets - they tend to give you less than number of persons live in room. Some towels were missing every day. They would not replace the bath stuff (shampoo, shower gel, etc) until you request this and present an empty can as evidence (soo nice rule for 5-star-ultra-all-inclusive hotel). Stains on chairs, sofas.
3. Queues! Everywhere! The hotel lacks the capacity planning and in high season is overcrowded. Queues are in main restaurant for a sea-view balcony, queues at the buffet, queues at show cooking, in bars, in waterpark, etc.
4. Beach. Overcrowded and small for such number of people. All sunbeds are always reserved with towels and hotel management doesn't care at all.
5. Beverage selection in room mini-bar. Too poor. A beer, a water and 3 soft drikns - that's it. Refilled every 2 days.
6. No one cares of pool usage rules: small children in "adult-only" pool, someone splashing and yelling under your windows at 12 am.
7. Internet - no connection in rooms. The wifi at lobby in beyond any quality or usability.
8. Safebox cost us 37 euro per 10 days - not good.

Consider another Mitsis hotel if you are going to visit Kos.

Room Tip: Rent a car and drive around. Thare are lots of nice and empty beaches on this island. The hotel beac...

Stayed at Summer Palace from 14- 27 June 2013
From reading previous reviews we understood that the hotel was built on a hillside which could involve walking up some steep slopes to reach your room. Well we were lucky enough to have one of the rooms at the very top of the hotel and boy was it worth it. The views were stunning and you could see the whole of the coastline all the way down to Kardemema. The room was large, clean and bright with maid service every day. There is a fridge filled with soft drinks, beer and water every second day. There is a buggy that will give u a lift to and from your room should you need it which I have never seen before in hotels that are situated on hills. There is no charge and I never felt that the staff driving expected a tip.
I have never seen so many pools in a hotel and for the whole two weeks we never failed at any time of day to find a sun bed around the pools or on the beach. The cleanliness of the hotel is second to none.
Food was good and always able to find something to enjoy. Huge choice of salads. Toni the chef a great guy and very entertaining. Well worth giving the Italian and Greek restaurants a try.
Yes there were lots of Russians and I don’t disagree with some of the reviews but this has been the case in several of my last holidays in different countries. We are all entitled to have a holiday surely.
We really did have a fab holiday and received fantastic service with a smile from all staff there especially Dimitrios who went out of his way to make our holiday special. Nothing was too much trouble for him. We will return to the Summer Palace in the future.

Room Tip: room 391 has the best views
