“Very dissappointed”
Reviewed 23 July 2014

Stayed at the Coronas Playa in May, this Hotel is not worthy of their Gold rating. The rooms are large but need refurbishing, the bed sheets did not fit the bed and were very worn. The towels felt like sandpaper, and egg yolk yellow! The restauraunt was dismal, and meal times felt a bit chaotic. but the food was edible and the staff were very good,The sunbeds and side tables were uncomfortable and dirty. Chairs in the Monkey Bar were dangerous, Passed all of our complaints on to Thomson, who replied,(Lisa Green) with a standard letter stating that most guests enjoyed their stay and were happy with the standard!!! Most of the elderly guests were repeaters.....they need to try somewhere else! Will not be returning.

This Thomson Gold Holiday has been the best holiday my wife and I have had for years.
You couldn't have asked for better Thomson staff, they were 5* and looked after our needs
from dawn till dusk.
The rooms were larger than most hotels and immaculately clean.
The hotel as a whole was excellent.
The staff from the manager down to the house where excellent.
We will be returning next year without any hesitation.

Room Tip: 90% room overlook the sea or pools.

It was the 3rd time we've stayed at this hotel and the improvements this year were very welcome - notably the heated pool and the free WiFi. The new TVs are LCD and have an HDMI socket. I brought my iPad and appropriate cables so that I could use the TV screen as a display for the iPad.
The rooms are all larger than they need to be, have a decent size balcony and all face a sensible direction. Being on a slope, the hotel is split level so the floor numbering can be hard to follow. (For example, reception is on the 4th floor even though it's at ground level.)
There's a "noisy" pool and a quiet pool. The noisy pool is heated this year, which made a huge difference. It's as warm as you would expect an indoor pool to be in the UK. Of course, if you've been sitting frying in the sun for a couple of hours, it might take a few minutes to adjust which is why some reviews have said it's cold. Trust me - it's not!
If you choose the "noisy" pool, there's plenty to do during the day. I joined in with some of the activities and enjoyed them. The Thomson Gold team (Mel and Connor) do a great job. Derek is the local specialist and we enjoyed joining his organised walks to Costa Teguise centre and Arricife. We also joined him on the local bus to Arricife and had a look round there with him. The local bus is easy to use, frequent and not expensive.
Normally I don't bother going to the entertainment in the evening, but the resident group at the moment, The Midas Touch, is extremely good. I went to the pavilion to hear them, rather than the other one-off entertainers who are supposed to be the main attraction. Steve is a talented musician (lead guitar, keyboard and vocals) and Christina is an excellent singer. They are also around the hotel at mealtimes and welcome conversation and musical requests. (Note: "Steve" is Steve Grant, formerly of Andy Scott's "Sweet".)
The WiFi system was being replaced by a free one while we were there and the new one is supposed to be available in all the rooms. Connectivity in our room was erratic, so I normally went to reception to use it. I'm sure it's just "teething problems" and it will be sorted out in due course.
There is a nearby gym for those who want to exercise. Previously, information about it was in our room on arrival, but it wasn't this time. I asked at reception and was given a leaflet along with appropriate stamps to confirm I was at the hotel. If I'd been in a "superior" room, it would have been free membership for the duration of the stay, otherwise it's a discounted price of 20 Euros/week. The gym has a lot of equipment but some of it needs some maintenance. I used the gym regularly and attended and enjoyed several spin classes. It's not a token gym like most hotels - it's a serious gym.
The food is what you would expect for this sort of hotel in Spain. It's not gourmet food. There's repetition, but there's a lot of variety. If you want to stuff yourself silly with fried eggs, fried bread, bacon and sausages every day you can - but you don't have to. There's always a selection of fresh fruit and other cold food. It's nice that porridge is always available for breakfast. I also enjoyed requesting poaching eggs. My favourite evening meal was when Duck A L'Orange was on the menu.
We stayed half-board and were happy picking up something for lunch each day from the local supermarkets. There's a HyperDino supermarket a short distance in both directions. There's a convenient bank opposite one of them. Next to the hotel entrance is a small shop (Brits) selling English newspapers, books, some food etc. Next to that is a cafe (Brits again).
The hotel has it's own beauty place, but there's also a shop very close which does similar things for a lower price - my daughter "got her feet done" there and was pleased.
Costa Teguise is often breezy, but the effect of the breeze is minimised by the way the hotel has been built. It tends to shelter the pool areas from the wind.

Just returned from a 10 holiday at The Coronas Playa. We were a party of 3 couples and we loved every minute of our stay. In fact we are about to book again for next year. From the lovely Kristian on reception to the fantastic waiters,Fran and Begonia in particular, to the dining room staff, to the cleaners, every last one of them could not do enough to make our holiday perfect. The entertainment team of Mel and Conor were great. A special thank you to Nathan and Sara, the Thomson reps who were helpful and cheerful. The entertainment is excellent as is the food and drink. We were AI as we like to have a drink or two!! In fact we were always the last to leave the bar every night. All the staff got to know our round within a ,matter of hours and always made sure our drinks were replenished as they got low. The hotel is spotless and there is a lovely walk from the back into small resort of Costa Teguise.

The majority of guests at this hotel had been before and yes the age group was definitely between 60 and 70 and a few younger guests arrived with their families as the week went on. This actually made for a really nice atmosphere and we met some very friendly people. The hotel and the resort is very well laid out for wheelchairs and mobility scooters so I understand why the clientelle is as it is. It is totally English guests which also helps with the communication.

The rooms were huge a bit of a waste of space really but kept very clean and yes do need a bit of a refurb but nothing serious. I do think a kettle, cups, coffee and tea should be provided because more people would make use of their balcony which was also huge. All rooms seem to have a good view and we were overlooking the bottom pool, the room was really quiet at night.

We sat around the bottom pool which was very well laid out, lots of space between sunbeds which I like not all lined up like soldiers. Yes, the pool man does remove towels before 10.00 which is a great idea as you can always get a bed up to around midday then it gets quite busy. One day inparticular the beds were hard to get with an umbrella. The pool at the bottom was not all that warm although heated and apparently the top pool was so cold nobody used it.

The drinks on the all inclusive were the best we have ever had, brand names and the cocktails were very well made except for the Mojito which tasted like mouth wash. Maybe some plastic champagne flutes around the pool would be nice as didnt enjoy the cava in a plastic half pint glass!!!

We were always served very quickly in the bar and staff were very pleasant and friendly, exactly the same in the Pavillion, we didnt wait long for a drink. I know that enterntainment is a personal choice but we actually really enjoyed the acts they brought in and the show put on by the Thomson reps was amazing, just so funny. The singers that came on between 9 and 10 were terrible but I understand they were not staying.

Now for the restaurant, very nicely laid out again no queuing and very civilised for a full hotel. The lady who kissed everyone was a bit annoying to watch as some guests clearly didnt want that. Always sat where we wanted at lunch and dinner and service was very quick and efficient. The choice of dishes was very English and I would have liked a few more Spanish dishes, very geared towards the English taste but when I saw Roast Beef with Sprouts and boiled potatoes that was a bit over the top. Lunches were a bit boring after awhile because again the specials were too heavy for the heat and especially when you can eat 3 good meals a day, icecreams etc. The salads were not that great in the evening looked like they just mushed together leftover dishes and called it chefs salad not very appealing. The desserts were not great and a larger choice would have been nice. This is just a personal choice as the quality of the food was very good and plenty of it but not enough variety.

Overall the staff made this hotel and we had a very pleasant stay, I would just like to say we went at the beginning of July and the weather was a disappointment (nothing to do with hotel of course) the mornings and evenings were quite cold as it is very windy and once the sun goes down (that is if you were lucky enough to see it during the day) it is too cold to walk out without a jacket and it is too windy to sit outside any bars or restaurants in the evening. Hopefully our weather experience was a one off for July.

Not sure if I would return, possibly not.
