“Very nice holiday”
Reviewed 30 August 2014

Me and partner went here on our first holiday together and we really enjoyed it. We did 10 days all inclusive and we felt it was good value for money. The excersions are quite expensive and you need to find out from other people the best ones as some are not as they are advertised, the food wasnt brilliant but it was edable but for the money we couldnt complain. Also, sunbeds were an issue so just be aware. The entertainment around the pool and in the evening was brilliant because of Kim and Liam they were so welcoming and a lot of fun!! Overall we enjoyed the holiday and would recommend it but remember you cant expect the world if you go for a cheaper holiday!!

2 days back from holiday at ficus Lanzarote,
4 of us 2 adults, 2 children aged 7 and 5.
Had a fab time, rooms were clean and tidy, the pool was cleaned every morning and the pool area washed down every night.
Liam and Kim do a fab job and try and get everyone involved but there are a few grumpy people....
Had to cue every day for sun bed from 8am they got unlocked at 9am but wasn't to bad.
Food was what it was basic but buffet so there were choices but fed up of chips now. Pudding was always good cake and ice cream.
We never seen the rep once whilst there for a week, how ever thanks to other people on site they helped with directions,
Bar staff were ok but only let you order so many drinks at a time and 1 doesn't know how to smile....
All in all had fab time it was what it was but would recommend it for basic holiday, kids club was 5 min walk down road and due to ratios only let certain amount children in so you get turned away so with our hotel and another they need more staff this time of year.

Room Tip: We went to the market and the volcano trip, however we booked it through the rep on welcome meeting...

stayed at the smart line ficus, what a mistake, the apartment was dirty had to request clean bedding and towels on day 6 as they had not been changed, the apartment flooded every time you had a shower, the food was awful we had to eat out every night, the staff were rude, the rep was complacent had obviously worked there to long as she was uninterested when we complained, there was no parasols to shade you round the pool people took sunbeds for their kids so there weren't enough for the adults, would never go back total waste of money and time of work. There was no kids club or kids activities the kid disco was the same 3 songs repeated every night in the bar even my 5 year old thought this was boring, the kids club is about a 15 minutes walkaway at the sister hotel on a first come first served basis. there is no air con you can hire a fan but that just moves the warm air round.

Room Tip: to ask for a room away from the club.

We recently had an 11 day all inclusive stay at the Ficus and I have to say that I could not fault it at all. My family and I (me and 3 kids aged 16, 12 and 9) had a fantastic time here.

I did not read any reviews on Trip Advisor before I went, as I like to make my own mind up and not have pre-conceived expectations.

On arrival we were greeted by the friendly Reception staff – they explained everything to us and advised us where our room was. We were on the first floor, so not too many stairs to lug the cases up (and as it was, a nice maintenance man carried some of our cases up the stairs). I think there were 3 floors, and there are no lifts (that we saw) so cases would need to be carried up.

The room was large enough for our needs. It consisted of a bedroom with twin beds, a kitchen area with a hob, fridge, sink etc. There was limited cutlery (2 teaspoons, 2 cup and saucers and 3 glasses), but this was ok as we had no intention of cooking in the room. There was no kettle in the room, but these can be hired from the Reception desk for a small cost. There was a kitchen table and 4 chairs in the kitchen area, a large sofa in the living area which turned into 2 single beds, together with a metal armchair and occasional table. There was a TV fixed to the wall on which you can watch certain channels without paying for them (if you want the whole TV package, together with the remote control, you can hire these from Reception – we didn’t do this). The room was cleaned most days, with the bedding and towels changed once a week.

There is a lovely spacious balcony which had a table and 2 chairs – we moved some of the chairs out of the kitchen area onto the balcony for our duration so that we could all sit out there in the evening. I suppose my only gripe was that no clothes airer was provided – but we improvised by putting damp swimming costumes/towels over the balcony or on the backs of the chairs to dry.

The restaurant was spacious and airy, and the food was plentiful, though did become a bit repetitive. The main food varied from day to day, though there was always salad and chips available at lunch and dinner, along with pasta (of which the sauces were separate). It is all help yourself and you can have as much or as little as you please. Some of the staff within the dining area were polite and smiley (actually I think there was only 1 lady who ALWAYS smiled), the others just looked plain miserable! Drinks within the restaurant are on a help yourself basis and these are soft drinks/fizzy drinks, water, tea and coffee along with lager and wine. Access to the dining room is available most of the day so that you can help yourselves to drinks and in the afternoon hot snacks are available along with biscuits.

There was one large swimming pool, together with a separate toddler pool. The pool and the pool area was clean and spacious, and free sun loungers are provided. Starting from July this year, the management at the Ficus have taken to padlocking the sunbeds together at night to stop the “putting towels at stupid times” to reserve your bed. They are unlocked about 9am each morning, but we did notice people hanging around from 8 am onwards. There are PLENTY of beds available, it’s just that some are newer and more comfortable than others, and these are the ones that people were queuing for and would take first. We never had an issue of not getting a sunbed, and we would normally get ours on our way down to breakfast. There is not much shade around the pool area, there are only two or three permanent umbrellas, and they are taken quickly. To the right hand side of the steps that take you to the pool area, there are some trees, and the shade is on this part most of the day. However, as the Sun moves, obviously other areas get shady as the day progresses, but a lot doesn’t.

There is a bar on the poolside which serves soft drinks, alcohol, teas and coffees and, of course, ice-creams. The ice-creams are cone based, and there are no other alternatives. We did ask for some ice-cream in a cup (plastic) one day as my son does not like the cones, but the kind lady advised that she would do it on this occasion, but that her boss doesn’t like her to do it. We were grateful to her, but after that we just asked for an ice-cream with cone, and then my son gave his cone to his brother who finished it off! We didn’t want to get her in to trouble! Situated just outside the main reception heading towards the pool, there is a self service ice cream cart. This isn't open until later in the afternoon, but it is mainly help yourself.

By this ice cream cart is the toilets. They were clean but obviously do get wet floors due to people coming straight from the swimming pool to use the loo. Also situated in this part are vending machines that serves both drinks and snacks for about 1.50 euro.

During the day (except Thursdays when we were there) there are activities/games put on by the entertainment staff. The entertainment staff (Liam and Kimberly, sometimes Jordan) were on site from 11am and each morning they would bring free cocktails to all around the pool area, including kids cocktails. Then a day of activities begins which could include water polo, splash bingo, snowball bingo, darts, snooker/pool, table tennis. The entertainment team break for lunch, but then activities go on until 4pm when, lastly, they present the certificates to the winners of the activities that day.

There is a small children's play area towards the back of the apartments, and this attracts the sun all day with no shade. There are pool tables (one situated by the park and the other in the patio area of the sun lounge), and a table tennis table (!) to keep the kids entertained.

There are a lot of cats on site, which kept the children entertained, but they don't really bother you. They mainly stay in the shady areas during the day.

The entertainment in the evenings is held in the Sun Room which is at the back of the dining room. This is a large, spacious area with lots of seating and a bar and all the evening’s entertainment is held in here. It starts around 7.45/8.00pm with the children’s entertainment by either the on-site entertainment team, but also from outside entertainers. The outside entertainers that were on when we were there was an owl/bird show, a magician and also a singer (but he was more for the adults on the day that the entertainment staff had off). Then the entertainment staff put on an array of entertainment for the adults, which included nightly Bingo, quizzes, rock the room, an evening of songs from musicals, etc etc etc. The entertainment team, Liam, Kimberley and Jordan, work DAMN hard to keep everyone entertained and they do an absolutely FANTASTIC job!! Although we didn't use it, there were children's clubs provided by Thomas Cook, and these took place at the sister hotel which was a short distance from the Ficus.

The beach and shops are a short walk away, with plenty of shops, bars and restaurants to cater for everyone. The pharmacy is a 5 minute walk from the Ficus too.

Free wifi is only available within the reception area of the hotel. You can pay to have wifi all around, but we were on holiday so were happy to do without. Though having said that, there are 2 computers in reception that you can pay 1 euro for 20 minutes access if you need to.

Lanzarote is a windy island, and it sticks around all day every day. According to my son's weather app, the winds were between 21-30mph during our stay. Whilst this is refreshing during the hotter parts of the day, it also covers up how much sun rays you are actually catching. Even with sun protection of Factor 30, my children and I all caught too much sun on a couple of occasions and burnt. Each morning when we woke up was cloudy, and it always looked as though it was going to be a miserable day weather wise, but by late morning, the sun always made an appearance and stuck around for the rest of the day.

All in all my family and I had a fantastic stay at the Ficus. I would definitely go back in the future and I would recommend this hotel too.

I hope I've covered everything in this review, but my apologies if I have missed anything out.

The rooms were spacious modern and clean, however we did have a problem with cockroaches, worst I've ever experienced in the canaries!
Pool was average, entertainment was average however credit to the reps who tried their hardest.
The FOOD..... It was disgusting, your choices being, veal, fish, spaghetti and a tomato purée sauce. The 'chicken nuggets' we're took off the menu when not 1 member of staff could explain why the 'meat' inside was brown?? No fresh fruit! No fresh bread! In fact nothing fresh! Our group of 15 dined elsewhere everyday even though we had paid for all inclusive! The daily snacks were a joke....fries or spaghetti & gravy, I kid you not! Please take my advise the food was vile! I wouldn't stay here again if I was paid. Our kids couldn't even drink the soft drinks as they were either flat or tasted like sugar and fizzy water. I complained and the manager shouted in my face that I had been the only person to ever complain!!! Haha he's obviously never read the reviews on here or spoke to other guests!

We enjoyed week here. The apartment was spacious enough for 2 adults and 2 children. The food was good and the staff always happy and helpful. The only thing I'd change about this place is the temperature of the pool. It was freezing!

Just come home from a 2 week stay at smartline ficus and it was excellent could not fault it in any way. I had read reviews about it before and was a little aprehensive as some of them were awful. However when i arrived i soon realised i would enjoy it there. The reception was very helpful, the maid was fantastic and kept the room spotless. If we needed extra towels she was always happy to help. The entertainment team kim and liam were really good and we always had a laugh in the show bar, the food was good and varied so there wasnt the same over again. Overall i think you got more than what you paíd for and would certinly go back.
