“good enough to sleep”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 26 December 2013

so...

this place is as my topic says - good enough to sleep - it's not an actuall hotel, but more of an Appartment "hotel"...

the staff there - with mr. Antonio - are great, friendly, helpfull and overall great!

concerning the price you pay it is great if you want your appartment (small kitchen with living room and one bedroom)
when choosing your room (if that is an option) - choose the ones on top and in the middle of complex (near reception), those are probabily the quietest...

if you are not looking for a 4-5 star hotel with some peace, quiet and you rented a car this is a great place to stay...

Room Tip: when choosing your room (if that is an option) - choose the ones on top and in the middle of complex...

Hi Folks , Me n the wife have just returned from a week in the Althay , Costa Calma .
Flew Ryanair from Eastmids , Coach transfer was £60 for 2 so hired car for week booked online for £100 instead which gave us the freedom to explore the island whenever we felt the need " i would recomend this "
Roughly an hours drive down the FV2 highway to Coast Calma threw mainly mountianous arrid terrain with a few scattered settlements untill you reach Calma where it looks like theres been an Explosion of Colour .masses of palms n the canarian bushes with the rich pink n purple flowers at every turn .
Althay Apts is set on a slight hillside to the rear of costa calma .
We arrived around 1 pm and were greeted with a friendly smile and hand shake from the now famous manager Antonio who processed us quickly inc maps and highlighted places to go in resort and beyond .,
We requested a room over the pool , Request was granted and we had room 67 which was in the perfect location , pool / mountian view , clean very spacious , twin beds , lots of storage , small kictenette with full fridge , shower toilet/bath beday , ashtray on the room table had a cutting of a local flower in it " nice touch " .
Dining hall and bar area are one ., dont be put off by this ., it is basic but the foodis fresh , hot , with selection of chicken pork , fish plus salad n chips , potatoes every meal ,very laid back bar area if the staff are busy you are allowed to serve yourself and if your behind the bar n someone else wants a drink you become the barman , there are a few tv's for sports and music is playing most of the time mainly local radio which plays mainly english songs .
Having had a stressfull year the atmosphere of the Althay/Costa Calma soon drained us of this and left us feeling very relaxed .
Costa Calma resort has a fantastic main beach , we even had a little skinnydip down at Sotavento Beach "2 km south of main resort " which is stunning .
Jandia "20 mins drive south " is also beautiful with a huge promanade/ shops cafes etc
Oasis park Zoo was nice although a little pricey at 27 Euro each for entry plus 12 euro for a camel ride up the mountain which was lots of fun .
Overall we had a lovely week , returned relaxed , great value for money no frills break , as the other reviews say if you want posh , pay posh prices , this is a little gem of a place run by a very nice hard working team .

Room Tip: Rooms in the 60's are overlooking the pool ;-)

Me & My friend have just returned from here after a 4 night short break , We were looking for some where peaceful ,just to relax in the day time with a bit of entertainment at night .We got plenty of peace in the day time , As there were not many guests ( Not sure if this was a good thing or bad ) But sadly absolutely no entertainment at all , All bar three sofa's and a 50 inch Tv in reception! We went for a wonder down 'town' But only came across two bars ,Mainly Local & German people inside . This is neither the hotel or location if you are looking for anything other than entertaining yourselves! There is absolutely nothing to do ! Having said that , The Complex , (Apart from the entertainment ) you can not fault! The Apartments were clean , The food by far the best I've had on my many trips to The Canaries & Spain & Greece! The staff as well , The most Friendly & Helpful ! Andrea , Leonardo & The Manager couldn't have been more helpful if he had wanted to! Just such a shame there isn't any form of Entertainment in the complex!

We stayed at the Althay on AI and could not fault it. We were greeted on arrival by the manager, Antonio, who took the time to show us on a map where the local beach, shops, bus stops, etc were, and then showed to our apartment. We were very happy with the apartment, which was spacious and clean. It had a small kitchen area with full size fridge so we could keep bottled water cold.
The restaurant and bar area was clean and tidy and the food was good - plenty of choice every day. The bar was well stocked and you could serve yourself with beer and wine! There was a good selection of spirits as well. The staff worked hard and were friendly and helpful. Self service drinks machines for soft drinks and hot drinks were also available.
The pool area is spacious with plenty of seating and sunbeds. The main pool was a good size and there was a small pool for toddlers.
There is a small shop next to the reception area which was well stocked with food and drinks (for those self catering) and also sells hats, flip flops, towels, bags, souvenirs, etc. We found this to be cheaper than the bigger supermarkets.
The walk to the beach took about 10 minutes but a nice stroll to walk off breakfast or lunch! The beach is fabulous and the sea clear and warm. Sun beds can be hired on the beach for 12€ a day.
If you want to explore the island then hire a car as there are not many buses to other places from Costa Calma.
If you want a quiet, relaxing holiday then this is the place to go. Thank you Antonio and all your staff - we hope to see you again!

Quick Review: Me and my girlfriend went for 7 nights all inclusive at Althay and had a fantastic time. Choosing the right hotel was stressful, as we were looking at cheap all inc. package deals in the Canaries and we spent hours on this site reading hotel reviews after hotel reviews.

Althay was up there with the most positive and it did not disappoint. For those who post negative reviews about Althay, then you did not do your research and expected too much for your money. This is a cheap but cheerful place to go.

In-Depth Review:

-Location-
The Althay is about 10 to 15 minutes walk from the beach, there's plenty of hotels on the beach front in Costa Calma but they're all 4 or 5 times more expensive than Althay. The walk from the beach to hotel did not bother us at all. There's a shopping centre in the same distance and direction too, where you'll find a supermarket and tourist shops, as well as a bar which is well worth a visit for its food and friendly staff. There's slightly bigger shopping centre 10 minutes walk further south on the right hand side. Costa Calma is not a huge place, so if you are looking for a thriving night life then this place is not for you, go to Tenerife or Ibiza. However, the quietness was very relaxing to us, which is what we wanted.

- Hotel -
The hotel is decent and I did not find any problems with it. Our room was number 24, by the poolside with a front room, en suite and the bedroom at the back. Our room was cleaned every other day, which surprised us as we didn't expect it cleaned so often. We liked having the room by the poolside for the convenience and did not find it too noisy either, although there's plenty of quieter apartments further back of the premises. If I could choose a room it would probably be the apartments above ours, as you have a balcony over looking the pool area.
The Pool itself was enjoyable, it never got too busy and there was always a sun lounger free on the poolside.
The Food was very enjoyable too and rarely repetitive. I especially enjoyed the breakfast choices.
The staff were fantastic, especially the manager Antonio who helped us out with excursion ideas and information about the town and the island. He's a genuinely friendly person who's happy to help despite being kept busy running the complex. Also, Andrea who worked in the bar and kitchen was a delight, and always helping with the alcoholic drinks.
The all inclusive drinks were decent, although not high branded spirits. The beer was local to the island and quite good, considering I don't drink beer too often. The spirits were still in variation from amaretto, dark rum, white rum, honey rum, vodka, whisky, malibu, and plenty of fruit schnapp liquors.
There are plenty of cats around the hotel which I found nice.
As for other people reporting about cockroaches, I did not see ANY at the hotel. The only roaches I saw were on the jetty at a neighbouring town during the whole holiday, so I don't know if they were unlucky or over exaggerating. Other guests at the hotel had no complaints but bugs or anything unclean either.
There were lots of couples at Althay, which was nice as a couple ourselves. There were big groups from time to time but they seemed to come and go throughout the week.

-Things to do-
If you want to do more than sitting by the Althay pool or on the beach then I highly recommend the excursion to OASIS PARK which is the zoo about 20 minutes drive away. Just speak to Antonio at the reception to buy your ticket, so you don't have to que at the zoo. There's two free buses that run outside the hotel too, at 9:15 and 10:15 in the morning. It cost about 25 EUROs and we even got given a free packed lunch each for our day which was a nice touch, just ask Antonio.
The Zoo is very big and there's plenty of things to do and see. We payed 10 EUROS extra to feed the Lemurs in a group of about 5 which made it quite personal. It was a fantastic experience to get so close to the animals. I did intend to the do the Camel ride which was popular however, on seeing it in person, I thought it looked quite cruel and the camels in transport did not look too lively being pulled up and down mountains. I know they've been used for centuries as human transport but is it necessary now? That aside, I recommend seeing the Sea Lion show which is free and very entertaining, as well as the Crocodile show.

-LOCAL BUS-
There's plenty of local buses that visit nearby towns. We visited Jandia / Morro Jable which is much bigger than Costa Calma and only about 30 minutes on the bus in total for about 6 euros for both of us.
There's plenty in Jandia, great beaches with hundreds more shops and bars. My only regret is not venturing further down to the Morro Jable end as the harbour, I was told, was worth a visit.
We also went the opposite way on the coast to Gran Tarajal which is a town more for locals than tourists. We didn't find any tourist shops in Gran Tarajal which was nice and enjoyed the black sandy beach they had there.
Other guests at the hotel said they went even further on the bus up to Puerto del Rosario and Castillo caleta de Fueste but I think the journeys are much longer. They said they were worth visiting as both places were larger than the south of the island.

Overall
Excellent all inclusive holiday if you are on a budget. 7 days is enough, although some couples were here for 14. It's still doable although you would probably want to explore more of the Island if you're here for that long.

Althay is well worth visiting, if you're wanting 4 or 5 star quality find the hotels by the sea front but you will be paying 200 quid more for it.

I'm not disappointed in choosing Althay and have to thank the honest reviewers on here for helping me choose it! Thanks!

I stayed here for ten nights at the beginning of September and in general was very happy with my stay.

The apartment was bigger than expected, with a nice king sized bed, kitchen, living room, bathroom and resident cat. Everything was clean, sheets/towels changed every other day. The cat, who we named 'ballbag', was very friendly and in good health, we were happy to have him visit us every day.

The location is quiet, there's a few bars in the surrounding area, but nothing crazy was going on. The beach is a pleasant 10 minute walk away, and is huge, we walked for over an hour along the beach and still hadn't reached the end. It's a nice, tidy beach with many nudists, mostly flobby.

The 'shopping centres' are mostly shops filled with tat/souvenirs and a small food shop occasionally. Great if you want to buy wooden necklaces and phalluses, not so great if you want to buy 0% sugar yogurt.

The food in the hotel was adequate, anyone would able be find something they would want to eat, but maybe would still get bored after about a week. Being a super fussy almost vegan I didn't enjoy the food so much as I was eating the same few things every day.
The alcohol was also not the best, I tried a few different rums and they all tasted like bleach. The amaretto was alright though. The cocktails could have been better, it doesn't seem right when they are in plastic cups, where's the fruit and umbrella.

In conclusion, the actual hotel was very nice, clean and comfortable. The food did not impress, but wasn't that bad. Alcohol could have been better. Beach amazing. If you want a very relaxing, quiet beach holiday this is the place to go.
