“Good hotel, but you need a car”
Reviewed 3 April 2012

The hotel is very attractive, probably one of the best looking on the island and the pool and beach area are excellent and well designed.

The hotel attracts a very high proportion of German tourists and a much lower number of English so you need to be up early to get those sunbeds ! Evening entertainment was dodgey to say the least. Drinks were mid to high priced - wine was 17-24 pounds a bottle at dinner.

Rooms were clean and modern and of a resaonable size. Housekeeping was generally good.
We went half board which worked out fine.

Breakfast is basically the same buffet each day but of a good standard. Evening meals are varied but after a few days they seemed the same. Quality of food was good and no issues with hot food being hot. Waiters appreciate tips but watch out, one or two forget to serve you if you do not tip them !

Rooms have safes - but you have to pay 2.50 Euros a day.
Beach sunbeds are OK - but you have to pay 3.00 Euros a day if you are not all inclusive.
Pool towels are quite large - but 10 Euros deposit each and 1 euro each time you want them changed.
Spa - OK for an hour or so - voucher in room gives 4 people a free session - which was good.

Location - outside of Costa Calma (which has nothing to do or see). Land outside of the hotel is baron rock and scrub - like most of the island !

Sun was good - but yes it's windy all the time - which can drive you nuts trying to find a place to avoid it.

Overall we had a good week - would I return, NO.

Room Tip: Choose a room on the 7th Floor facing the sea. Very good view but a bit noisy when they are setting...

We had one of the best holidays ever and so pleased we chose this hotel. It was in a fantastic location and not too far from the beach - it was a lovely 10 min or less walk to the beach and such a beautiful beach!!! Some people have said it's not in a good location but I disagree. If you don't want to walk to the beach or shops, there was also the choice of taking a local bus and the buses would collect people from the front of the hotel.

The hotel was beautiful and kept immaculately clean. The pools were stunning and well kept and the rooms were beautiful. The food was good and there was an outdoor eating area which was very pleasant and of course an indoor eating area. The entertainment and bar areas were quite good. I would highly recommend this hotel with no hesitation.

The Spa was also lovely and everyone checking in received 2 free passes to the spa for their stay. My husband and I went to the spa our last day and it was fantastic!!

My only area of improvement involved the dining room - if you go to dinner early, it was fine and easy to get a seat. However, I noticed if people went to dinner a bit later, they had to wait in a bit of a queue to get a seat. This must have been frustrating for some people. We never had this problem as we like to eat early.

I also noticed that there weren't enough loungers at the pool so some people were sitting on the grass on their towels if they couldn't find a seat. Again, if you got to the pool early, finding a seat wasn't a problem. They also had a man made beach at the hotel itself in a different area - which was lovely - but they charged a slight fee to sit in the loungers only in that area. I think charging for these seats is wrong.

Lovely landscape, flowers and fountains/waterfalls at the hotel as well.

Noticed most of the guests at the hotel were German - and not as many British. However, this didn't bother me at all.

I would definitely return to this hotel in the future!

Room Tip: I believe all of the rooms had a sea view from what I hear so hopefully any room would be great.....

Ken & Elaine, Portstewart.
Stayed at this hotel for 2 wks, half board March 2012. On arrival we were booked in by a very sour, unsmiling receptionist. The room was well furnished but we had specified a double bed and got two singles pushed together which was extremely uncomfortable especially as we were there for two weeks. Room had a great view over the pool area and sea. Chamber maid service was very good. The food in the restuarant was varied but of canteen quality, over cooked, tough meat for 2 weeks, Waiter service was dreadful, waiting almost 20 mins to get table set, and to give a drinks order. Waiters were busy clearing other tables. Female waitresses were more attentive and helpful. Keep away from house wine, totally revolting. Floor service at the cocktail bar was horrendous. We waited 25 mins before leaving one night, even though there were two waiters and two bar staff. Staff spoke very little English, mainly German, Spainish, not motivated to please guests. Location was poor, 45 mins walk to the local 'Town' not really a Town, a few very small shops supposed to be shopping centres. Hotel is good if you just want a pool holiday as nothing else to do. Weather was really good, but if not then not much to do. Would definitely not return, due to basic food, poor service and isolated location.

Room Tip: Floor 7 has good views, ground floor no views .

This a wonderfully landscaped hote which is an ideal escape if you want to just rest enjoy the sun and have good meals and service.

The animation tean are good fun but not too pushy and the night cabaret entertainment is better than most hotels of a similiar grade. The spa too is worth a visit after a hard day in the sun!!!

Room Tip: Ask for a sea view with a balcony

I stayed at this hotel in February. Was a bit concerned following previous reviews and the drive from the airport showing the bare landscape was a concern!. However when i arrived at the hotel the grounds were beautiful all kept very clean and tidy, the reception staff on check in were friendly and helpful. The room was perfectly adequate for what we needed, fairly spacious with a lovely balcony overlooking the sea, the shower in the bathroom is a lovely power shower. The restaurant service was great, they were quick to clear plates and the food to choose from was vast. There was plenty of food and choices to cater for all tastes. I got the bus to Jandia which is well worth getting for 2.50 it is a lovely place to visit. I also went to Corralejo on the north coast was well wortha visit with plenty of shops and restaurants. The only thing worth bearing in mind is the hotel is quite remote, it takes a 20min walk to get into the town, and there is not much in the town for shops etc. all in all a lovely relaxing holiday.

Based on the reviews at several sites we decided to go to this hotel. To be honest we are a bit disappointed. The staff is definitely not motivated and it seems that service with a smile is not part of the package here. Quite depressing. Work to be done for the management of Rio Calma

In 2012 I would also expect internet to be internet. We read it was only in the lobby, but I think their router is for home use only. No capacity and we have asked to restart the connection for more then 10 times now. Frustrating.

Facilities like room, pool etc. are really nice. When the staff is motivated and annoying details are taken care of this place can indeed be rated with a 8. For now it is a poor 6 at most times of the day.
