Superb holidays

We had a wonderful 2 weeks in Fuerteventura.

That resort is located in the south of the island.

Reception : multi-language reception ( English, French, Polish, Spanish, German) available 24/h.

Garden : many gardens outside and pools which doesn't make the place looks busy even if there is a lot of people.

Restaurant : Just excellent with various food options for everyone. The breakfast and supper are romantic as You can eat outside on the patio

Beach : there is no beach access in Rio Calma but 5 minutes walk.
All inclusive option is really an all inclusive one - no fake !

Beautiful beach with a lot of attractions is 1,5 hour on foot but You can take a taxi just for £10 (ask for Rene Egli club on the beach).

Entertainment at hotel is not the best but You can always go for a bat trip or scuba diving
Relaxing and calm those words are reflecting the place the best. Would recommend to any one

Room Tip: worth to go for a 4 floor and sea view

Going to Rio Calma means gambling with your money. We've been among the many people that were at the Rio Calma whilst the Deutsche ZDF was filmlng there 'ZDF-on-tour' programme, supposedly taking a couple of days and no interruption for the guests as we were told by hotel staff. Just if you think this was a one-time event... it's not. Affected guests found footage on Youtube which proofs the show has been shot already several times at the same location.

Now where this went wrong we never figured out but the both hotel management and Thomas Cook were not aware of anything and have downplayed the whole event. This whilst the majority of the resort was un-accessible for hotel guests for at least 6 days, we had to 'enjoy' German schlager music for breakfast, lunch and dinner and armed security guards to make sure hotel guests would not interfere with the programme. Hotel management refused to speak to guests and explain the situation. Thomas Cook acknowledged something was not quite right but said they didn't know of the event happening prior to the complaints pouring in.

So, an expensive holiday wasted, which probably would have been worth the money if the whole event hadn't happened or was resolved during the holidays. Rio Calma hotel management is probably still counting their money charged to ZDF, the free advertisement from the recordings and of course the foolish guest they weren't bothered with. If you like a gamble and want to know what's hot in the German charts, this is your place to be. If not, look further and make sure you get value for your money.

Again, the recordings have happened before and will probably continue until hotel management understands the importance if respecting their own guests.

We have been very disapointed by this hotel . It is quite big and beautifully set up but we must say the hotel management was terrible. They accepted a tv show from a german channel to make a filming , without even having the decency to let know the customers of the annoyance ! We could hear from 8am some German speaking or music so loud you could hear it from your room. They had taken the best spots of the hotel to install their scenes, German tv staff everywhere with all the materials everywhere, security guards blocking the way to our room. All this the whole week and the hotel staff not even available to discuss the issue with the guests ! We also found this hotel very child unfriendly, we have two children under 4 and they were not able to play in the lagoon, nor in the evening, there would be someone from the animacion coming and saying they wont be able to play ! Avoid this hotel !

Just back from a week 25 April to 2 May. The hotel is just enormous and you have to be impressed by the enormous reception area and atrium with stained glass. The rooms were slightly dated in style as others have said, but perfectly fine and spotlessly clean. Good mattresses and yes, as others have said, pillows long and very flat but we were warned so managed to squeeze our own into our cases. All depends if you are pillow sensitive or not! Biggish bathroom also very clean. We were on the 7th floor with a sea view and it's true you do need a balcony with a balustrade not a solid one.

The best by far was the pools and garden. The landscaping down to the sea is really stunning and once you've got your bearings it really is beautiful. The infinity pool lovely though quite exposed with lots of beds and parasols on a large area around the pool. The other pool right next to it is set in beautiful surroundings and surrounded by trees and grass. There are sun beds just above it, with lots of shade and next to the pool bar (which has really great icecream). The highlight was the third lagoon pool, on a much lower level and down towards the beach, past the waterfalls. Chipmunks on the walls on the way down and along the beach wall. This was really paradise though you have to pay for a bed unless you're with Thomas Cook. There are no parasols and shade is on one side only in the morning but by the afternoon there is no shade at all unless you line yourself up in the shadow of a palm tree. We stayed in the morning but by early afternoon when it was very hot, we moved "upstairs" to the other pools.

Comments seem to be mixed on this site about the food but we were on HB and thought it was very good with an astonishing choice. To anyone who thinks it's terrible, I can't imagine what they eat at home!? The choice of fruit, salads, pasta, vegetables, meats, cheeses etc is vast and the fish and meat cooked instantly to order was always delicious. Whatever you wanted, it was there, cooked and presented in endless different ways. The food was let down by the deserts, and will be familiar to anyone who has travelled to certain countries - strange mountains of flourescent mousse type things, topped with sprinkles or digestive biscuits or jelly or I don't quite know what. Also bowls of unidentifiable gloop...and those huge multilayered cakes filled with that strange white polystyrene "cream". The saviour was nice icecream and sometimes hot mixed berry compote or flambéd bananas. Breakfast had an enormous selection of just about everything. We didn't think the drink prices were excessive.

The only real thing that lets the hotel down is the entertainment. The hotel is a bit isolated so the evenings need to offer something of a standard that matches the hotel. It's hard to understand how they can offer such dire, cliched stuff - the obligatory parrot show and what seemed like the same singers every night churning out what sounded a playlist from the 70s. And the usual electric keyboard that makes everything sound the same. Imagine I will Survive and Can't Take My Eyes Off You and you get the drift. Truly dreadful and there seems to be a man shouting into a microphone most nights. We were unlucky enough to be deafened by it most evenings when were sitting on the balcony trying to relax. Having said that, it was all over by about 11. The Botanic Garden, round the corner from Reception, is a lovely spot to sit in the evenings with candles and relaxation music. A nice escape from Microphone Man.

Despite this, a great hotel with lovely food, wonderful pools, friendly staff (despite what others have said, they were only ever nice) and a perfect choice for a relaxing break. Nice to see a hotel looking after their feline friends properly. There are four pairs of cats with their own garden, cathouse and feeding station.

Room Tip: Floors 6 or 7 to get sea view, with balustrade balcony not closed in one. Above the disco would be...

We stayed here for a week from 19th - 26th April 2014 and had the most wonderful, stress-free break. The resort was sold to us as quiet and remote, however we were never too far away from a bit more noise should we have chosen it. The nearest shop was a ten minute walk down the hill (we bought our snacks, water and alcoholic drinks for the room from here as it was much cheaper than hotel prices). The bus stop was 15 min walk and the buses ran every 30 mins to the lively town of Jandia and the old port Morro Jable for about 4 Euros return.
Hotel was clean and spacious, rooms were well equipped with tv, mini fridge and hair dryer in bathroom. Although it stated 3 English tv channels, the signal was very poor in our room so we didn't really attempt to watch it very often. . Too much else to enjoy!! Our room was on 6th floor and had a sea view over the top of a concrete balcony wall.. the view was obscured by the wall when sitting down. I'd recommend asking for a balcony with balustrades when you book as we tried to change room but none were available. Also the 6th and 7th floor have best views.
Food was excellent and plentiful. Theme nights gave variety although I was disappointed with the quality of food on the Chinese night as much of it was un-labelled and not a patch on what you'd get from the chinese takeaway! ! Every other night was excellent though. Free champagne at breakfast was a nice treat to accompany the buffet. However, queues for the self service coffee machine were crazy at busy times. If you sat outside though, you could have a pot of coffee brought to your table by waiting staff.
The pools were nice and clean. We moved two sunbeds on to a quiet grassy area by one pool, as people were having to lie on towels but we were quickly told off by the life guard. The beds are only allowed on the concrete but there are no signs indicating this.
The lagoon was our favourite spot to bathe and fairly quiet. You have to pay 3 euros per sunbed but if you book with Thomas Cook they are free. You need to show the man your restaurant card as it has 'Hamacas' (sunbeds) stamped in red on the top. Nobody told us this so it took 2 days for us to find out from another hotel guest. Reception desk staff were not the friendliest and often the queue was slow when other guests checked in or out.
It was also not advertised that we could keep our room until 3pm on departure day for no extra charge. On asking Reception, I was told check out was 12 and we could use a half room for a shower. Another guest told me to ask about keeping the room and when I did so, the staff member said it was ok and re-activated my room key.
Entertainment was not the best. Enjoyed the flamenco dancers but everything else was poor, especially the duo who sang at least 3 nights during our stay. The piano bar gets full with people using the free wifi on their phones so often nowhere to sit until after half past ten.
We were allowed 4 free visits to the spa using a voucher given to us at check in and made use of this twice. Each time we went about 6pm as it was quiet. The facilities were lovely and it really chilled us out. Some lockers had a key, others required 1 euro which was returned. You also got free towels to use.
The hotel was primarily inhabited by German and French couples, very few English or children. It also has about 6 cats which are part of a conservation project - they were friendly and shared their food at night with little hedgehogs! By the lagoon there are cute chipmunks living in the rocks.. we often saw people giving them nuts and they came within very close proximity.
All in all, a fab hol and just what we needed. Only improvements would be more staff to be helpful at Reception and more exciting entertainment :)

I will be honest the salt water lagoon did sell this hotel to me and I wasn't disappointed! We arrived late in the evening after dinner service however the hotel still provided us with some light bites and drinks. The building it's self is modern and inviting,Moroccan styled and colored on the outside and bright and airy on the inside.
The whole place is immaculate as are the manicured gardens. Ok the rooms are smaller that I imagined but then you have a good sized balcony which we used every evening to have drinks and take in the view.Good size bathroom with shower & bath, A/C which does work! A mini fridge was a great treat to pop your drinks in.TV with 4 English channels (should you want to go on holiday & watch the box!)
The staff are very friendly and will help you with anything from trips to taxis, the food was good plenty of choice breakfast was amazing and in the evening they did different themed nights,- oriental, fish supper,Spanish,American etc There was always something for every taste.
Lunch in the poolside snack bar was great we had the help yourself salad everyday !
Entertainment in the evening was fun,we had a Chinese circus one night, flamenco another enjoyable with a champagne cocktail mixed by the lovely bartender David!
The hotel is not remote! Its the first in the strip of hotels it literally took 10 mins to walk into town. The town is pretty and quiet but that's why we chose Costa Calma if you want English bars and fish n chips go stay in Corralejo north of the Island of Fuerteventura.
This area we found was more adult orientated it is popular with naturists so you will see folk being at one with nature!
One thing worth noting is that there is an excellent bus service 15 mins away that for 4 euros each return will take you to Jandi for some shopping.
The pools are heated and very clean, the saltwater lagoon has a sandy beach which is raked every morning.
On site there are a selection of activities each day you can join in with from golf to archery and salsa dancing!
This is the first holiday hotel I was truly sad to leave there is a good ,relaxed atmosphere at the Rio Calma you can't go wrong! WE WILL BE BACK!

Room Tip: I think they are all mostly balcony rooms with amazing views across the Atlantic ours was on the 7th...
