“Decent hotel, wonderful location”
Reviewed 25 November 2011

Hotel was ok, the staff was polite, the room was spacious and clean, plus we had sea view from our balcony. Make sure you do not book a promo room as that would put you into some kind of basement with no view at all.

Food was decent, a bit repetitive but still ok. If you compare it to the food standard of a RIU hotel than you might find it poor. Special mention to the Gazpacho soup.. this one was really excellent every single day.

We went there in april and the pools were not heated. Outside temperatures were ok (24-25) but the water temp of the polls could have been warmer.

Hotel has a separated "italian side"... but that didn't bother us.
This is teh perfect location for a relaxed beach holiday. The beaches in front of the hotel are very nice. You have to visit Sotavento beach (yes the one from the postcards), it's about 15-20 mins walking along the beach in front of the hotel but it is simply an amazing beauty. It can compare to many beaches in exotic countries

I would have rated this 3.5/5 , but for the beach location i give it 4/5.

Not a bad hotel at all. Pretty much what you would expect from a mass market beach holiday hotel. Great location and great local beaches with very easy access (straight from the hotel gardens). Staff were polite and friendly. Hotel gardens and shared communal areas are large and well kept; you don't really get the feeling that you are sharing a building with 500+ other people - it's a large hotel but feels like there's loads of space for everyone. The only criticism of the shared spaces would be that there is not enough seating outside the bar area at night and that much more could be made of the rooftop terrace area - but this is a minor point. Rooms are very good and you will be very unlucky to get one of the few rooms without a sea view - no negatives there.

The only real negatives I would have of this hotel would be that the pools are very cold and not very deep (therefore not great for swimming). I usually love cooler pools so I'm guessing they must be regularly refilled and not heated for me to feel this way. There are plenty of sunloungers but our European neighbours, as usual, fail to practice sunlounger etiquette. If there hadn't have been so many I would have been tempted to throw their towels into the pools! There are three large pools to choose from and there is hardly anyone in them - probably because of the temperature issue! You do feel the wind by the pool areas but the beach is more sheltered and fabulous! Sunloungers down there are 4 Euros per day per bed, not operated by the hotel.

Biggest negative is regarding the restaurants. Firstly it's important to say that the food is generally good. But lukewarm at best by the time you have got your buffet plate sorted and sat down. The waiting staff are not great at relaying the outside tables so if you want to eat outside every night, as we did (although it was borderline for temperature by end Oct) you will need to either sit at a dirty table until they reset it or request a table be reset. I wasn't impressed by this. If I was to return there I would recommend eating from the show cooking stations as the food it hotter and more freshly cooked.

Review over folks. Take on board the negatives but rest assured this hotel will provide you with a lovely holiday and you won't be disappointed.

Room Tip: If you want to get to sleep before about 11.30pm request a room away from the Italian Veraclub side...

Exploring the hotels for our next holiday, we have entered here and watched a little around. The grounds are nice and all looks very clean and tidy. The beach is just there – 30 seconds and you are in the sea. The beach is so and so but 500 meters on the right there is a nice clean beach and further starts ‘’Playa Barca’’ – an incredible large beach for kite-surfers and not only (if it is not windy it is excellent to take the sun and make a bath). There are lots of funny squirrels in front of hotel among the rocks – this is a daily fun for kids (buy unsalted nuts or prepare pieces of fruit and vegetables).
The Italian animation is very quiet and not disturbing. The negative sides we have noticed:
1 – The territory is very very small and the space is really limited. We have passed here at 12.00 and there was no any free bed at the swimming pool.
2 – The animation is divided between Italians (Vera Club) and other guests. The one for other guests is non-existant. The Vera Club animation is very nice but is reserved exclusively for Vera Club guests (have particular bracelet color). This discrimination is strange and disgusting and makes you feel something like an outcast… There are 2 mini-clubs, one for international guests was empty and looked sad when we were there (there was only a couple of unwatched german kids on the playground and nobody inside the house). The other one was Italian and was full of life – Italian-speaking staff was entertaining Italian kids and there were lots of happy kids inside. The evening show is also divided to Italian and german. Mmmmm…. Have never ever seen this kind of an offensive thing elsewhere.
3 – The rooms are simple and are ok, the only thing – it was strange to see a bath curtain in the room instead of a modern bathtube glass (as the other hotels have). It is impossible to wash and desinfect the bath curtain so well as the glass! There is a little fridge in the room which is useful.
I can not comment on food, but I have seen that the drinks are the same as in the other hotels. They offer beer, wine, sparkling wine (local champagne) etc. at all bars.
You have to consider that Costa Calma is a small resort with few bars and restaurants. There is DIVINO for dancing, OASIS PARK ZOO for kids in 10-minutes drive (too expensive), the beaches are overcrouded (if you compare to Jandia beaches which are empty, large and lovely). And yes… Note, that in the whole area I haven’t seen so many nudists (naturists) all together as on the beach of Tindaya. They have like a special area on this beach and there are many many many of them. Be prepared and prepare your kids. If you go to the other beaches you will see many nudists but not so many concentrated all together.
I think that if you find Tindaya for 600-700 pounds per week for a family of 2 adults and 1 child – you can go there and it will be a good bargain. But if you have to pay more – choose one of the Sunrise hotels. The same quality for the lower price.

We had our vacation at the end of october. We enjoyed our stay there! We noticed that the hotel is devided into two parts: the italians and the germans :)) But its OK. The italians have more facilities at the beach, like free watersports. The hotel has interesting design, a lot of outdoor pools, mini golf, big outside chess, tennis court, pingpong, playgame rooms, darts. At the pool bar you find fresh hamburgers, salads, cookies. You can refill your coke, bear or coffee at any time. The inside restaurants are nice, with delicious food and fresh all te time. You have free wireless internet at the reception, you have different animations in the evening, aerobics in the pool. The beach is right next to the hotel, the beds there are 10euro a day per set, if you want. The rooms are big woth balconies. The room service is very nice, they clean really good, and after all they make flowers, swans from towles and leave them on the bed. We enjoyed our holiday and we didnt notice anything bad in 8 days of stay,

Room Tip: Choose a room not over the restaurant if like to sleep long :) Actually it wasnt a problem for us.

Let's start saying that the resort is recently built and is split in two wings: one wing host the Italian Veraclub hotel, the other wing hosts international guests. I stayed with the Veraclub tour operator.

ROOM: The room was modern, spacious, a/c, small balcony with a table and 2 chairs. Bathroom was big and all the appliances where new (or well mantained). The floor was mopped daily and the bed made. Th towels will not be changed UNLESS you leave them in the bath tub.

RESTAURANT: Being a huge resort there are two restaurants, a big one and a smaller one. They have exactly the same buffet, so you can choose either of them. Being black-flies one of the biggest problem of the hotel, I found that the smaller restaurant has got less of them.
The food was very good with a wide choice at every meal. You won't have an assigned table, when you get to the restaurant you can seat on any free table. They are re-set several times during the opening time of the restaurant. We never had problems finding a seat.

POOLS: The resort has got 4 pools + 2 baby pools. All of them are surrounded by lots of sunbeds. The problem with them is that people leave their beach towel there to "reserve" them during meal times, so if you want to spend the morning on the beach an the afternoon around the pools is likely that you'll struggle to find a free bed unless you're happy to argue with someone as reserving beds is NOT permitted. All the pools are very clean and amazingly mantained, one of them has got sea water. There are two bars around the pools and they're open 10am-6pm with drinks and snacks available all day.

BEACH: The beach DOES NOT belong to the hotel, like all the beaches in Spain it's owned by the government, so if you're using a sunbed and/or sun umbrella you have to pay €4 each a day. It is a free beach, so you'll find other people on the right end of the beach. FYI in Spain naturism is allowed in all the beaches.
The beach is not amazingly clean, a lot of cigarette butts. There are a lot of squirrles on the rocks behind the beach... Kids will love them!!!

ENETERTAINMENT: There are two entertainment equipe. I'm going to speak only about the Veraclub one (Italian) cause I have no idea about the international one... THEY WERE AMAZING!!! Very nice and very funny!!! Never intrusive... The shows were the best I've ever seen in a resort... Amazingly funny... Really! Probably a good part of this was because the equipe leader Matteo that was great, but I think that all the equipes arefairly good!!!

RECEPTION: Receptionist where very nice and helpful and speak a good English, Spanish and German...

GENERAL: As I said the biggest problem of the resorts are the blackflies... They are everywhere at any time... A little bit less during the night. The bars close at midnight, the espresso is NOT part of the all inclusive package and is rubbish, so don't spend your money on it!!!

Full board in this hotel for one week with my wife and 2 children..
The simple facts:
- Location - The hotel is right beside a local beach at the south end of Costa Calma town and the north end of multiple fabulous beaches of Jandia. It is very quiet, but because of the hotel size, I would try to avoid rooms near the lifts. To be fair, very well behaved guests but just quite busy when we stayed there.
- Rooms - We had a family room booked and I must say the best I have come across in a 4 * hotel. The parents have one room, the kids have a separate room! Again due to the hotel design, most rooms have a beautiful pool and beach view. Air con was OK, not the best I have come across but the size and space made up for that. Rooms were cleaned daily and to a very high standard.
- Service & Staff - Good to excellent (the people running the kids club would put Mary Poppins to shame! They were very dedicated and very helpful and the kids loved them). Other staff were pleasant and helpful but could learn a lesson or two from the kids club staff (they are the people I tipped at the end of the week!)
- Food - The food ranged from "OK to good" compared to other hotels. No shortage, plenty of choice but a little bit bland at times. The inclusive drinks were "poor to OK" and ranged from poor tasting beer and "sugar water" from a tap as opposed to regular soft drinks. This was a bit disappointing but you could order premium wine and beer at an extra cost of course!
- Entertainment - Pretty OK overall but the highlight was for the younger guests (again back to the kids club)
- Kids Club & Other facilities - "Very good to excellent", see note above about staff! Plenty to do everyday. I think I counted 5 pools, so no shortage of H2O in the H10! ;) The hotel courtyard is quite large and has more than one playground, tennis courts, beach volleyball, Chess, pool bar and is very well maintained.
- Overall atmosphere - Busy but pretty relaxed!!! Not bad on the poolside towel "matadors"! Efficiently run hotel. Guests were mostly German and there is a separate wing of the hotel (and entertainment area) dedicated specifically for an Italian run holiday club, but that was fine also.
- Transfer from Airport - I would recommend direct Taxi, only about 55 minutes and very reasonable
Town - Costa Calma is a custom built "new town" where many of the hotels are "All inclusive". The downside to this is that there are few shops or alternative places to eat or drink so there is not really much else for doing with the exception of course of relaxing on the beautiful beaches that run for miles and miles.
Beach - The town beach is very long with fine sand, plenty of rentable sun loungers and umbrellas. South of the town, the H10 hotel marks the beginning of a fabulous set beaches one longer than the next!.

Beds are hard as stone. Lady from the reception told us the matresses had to be hard, because otherwise they had to buy new ones more often... We slept at the couch because it was a bit softer.
Hotel is extremely noisy! The hotel has open walls and therefor all the noise echoes through the hallway.
The italian animation team is very annoying. Loud, rude and 'Jersey Shore'-like. The evening entertainment was just sad. Luckily we didn't go for the entertainment.
Food was okay but the dinner areas were loud, crowded and not comfortable at all to eat dinner. Noisy, busy personnel.
It was so windy at that time. Not something the hotel can doabout, but they can make some areas with windshields or whatever. No such thing...
All inclusive formula was just shamefull. For example: For a cup of coffee the bartenders poored, we had to pay extra. The coffee from the pot tasted like rubber, mud and sirup. Soda was post mix...sad and cheap!
The overall feeling about the hotel: outdated, old, glory days are over. Definitely not value for your money.
After two weeks at this hotel, we were tired, numb and desperately needed vacation. NEVER AGAIN!
