The Falls Retreat
Reviewed 14 December 2013

We stayed at Rose Cottage for a birthday weekend treat - and treat it is. Emma & Brad have created an amazing vibe - the cottage is very sweet and has everything you could possibly need (including friendly cat). The surroundings are blissfully peaceful - with quick access to the falls at the bottom of the drive - and 200m to the Hauraki Cycle Trail which lets you easily explore the beautiful surroundings. And then to top it off The Bistro is magnificent. The food created by Brad King & his team is truly outstanding - full of flavour, beautifully cooked & presented and matched with some stunning wines. As the restaurant was full with a large booking we were offered the chance to have dinner brought to us in the private pergola overlooking the falls. It was fantastic - the poor waiter bringing us our various courses needs a high five as his smile never faltered. And the same care & attention to detail is brought to play with the fresh breakfast provided for guests at the cottage - home baked bread, fresh fruit, home-made muesli - it's all just brilliant. I hate to say how good it is in case we can't get in next time we want to come - but you should definitely try The Bistro. Well done!

Hardly dare write a review in case we can't book again in future as too busy! We loved Rose cottage - Beautiful setting, friendly hosts, wonderful bistro a v short walk away! cosy and warm with the wood burner, clean and luxurious without feeling that you need to worry about the children. The is plenty of space for the children and dog to play, close to lots of lovely places - though we never even went out in the car! walked from the cottage to the gorge and the woods/waterfall. A great place for a family break.

Stayed two nights at the Falls Retreat. It was a great weekend away. The cottage was very clean and had everything you needed. Restaurant on-site had great food with plenty to choose from. The walks were brilliant; the paths were in good condition and the views beautiful. A choice if you are looking to rest and re-charge the batteries.

We were greeted with a warm welcome and freshly baked bread from Emma. She took time to explain the walks and cycling available around. The location is great with the falls at the bottom of the road.
The bistro served delicious wood oven pizza's and the chunky chips were gorgeous - compliments to Brad.
Cute cottage with large bedroom upstairs. Great value for money.
Emma is a great host and made sure our stay was enjoyable.

We stayed for just one night, on a cycling tour. The cottage was spacious, very clean and had every comfort we needed.
As it was middle of winter we were impressed with the warmth. Two heaters and a wonderful potbelly stove with kindling and wood were great.
The owners were brilliantly helpful, even greeted with hot home baked bread.

The onsite restaurant was another great find. We had real quality French cuisine, and the pizza's alsonlooked good.

The Karangahake walkway/cycleway is excellent, and only a minute from the Retreat.

We plan on returning.

I’m joining the other very positive reviews – the forest, nearby falls , nearby restaurant and the cottage itself, all were great and not expensive. If you look for accommodation in that area, it’s great choice

This place was a surprise for us. Located close to the Karahangahake gorge and 20 min. drive from the ocean with beautiful views over Owharoa falls. We slept at the Rose cottage which is just behind the family's wooden villa. the house is surrounded by beautiful gardens. The kids loved the bikes and little playground. The cottage was very nice, especially the sleeping room which was well decorated. Shower was small and water presure is low. Cleanliness can improve - mailnly in the shower and toilet area. Our older son liked the X-Box and movies which were placed at the cottaged for the guests usage. Beds were comfortable. The price included nice breakfast with home baked tasety bread.
We had a dinner at the bistro which was very good.
