“Well Looked After”
Reviewed 27 May 2014

The walkway was well maintained and had very good information panels detailing the history of the pumphouse, which is the main feature on the walkway. We were there late in the afternoon and it was very attractive with the low sun. Waihi really makes an effort to showcase its gold mining heritage and was very clean and tidy.

“Awesome walk”
Reviewed 27 May 2014

Great to be able to see the open pit working in some places of the walk. Suitable for push bikers and push chairs. Takes about 30-40 minutes to do the rim. Easy walk.

“Easy Informative Walk”
Reviewed 18 May 2014

Great walk to do if you have never been to a gold mine. Gives nice interesting facts around the perimeter of the gold mine. They do bombings once in a while and I managed to catch one of them. Not that spectacular or loud as you're quite a distance away. But interesting to watch nevertheless. Doesnt take too long to do since it's generally flat the entire journey.

“Martha Mine; Big Hole, Scenic Walk.”
Reviewed 29 April 2014

How many times have we passed through Waihi and just noted the old pump house on the hill? The other day, we needed to kill some time, so dropped in to the pump house area. Although we had heard about the active gold and silver mine there, we were unprepared for the size of the hole; 250m deep is deep. Huge trucks are tiny at the bottom. The operator has conducted a smooth PR job, and planted 1000s of native plants that follow the general area of the rim. Informative plaques advise in a perhaps, too positive way, of the benefits of digging a huge hole and extracting the resulting gold/silver. (3 grams per tonne of rock). The pit will become a lake in a few years.
It takes perhaps 45 mins to do the 4Km walk, but it is recommended if you are passing through. There is an information centre nearby.

“Waihi Martha Mine pit Rim Walkway”
Reviewed 16 April 2014

This is a very scenic walk, around an operating gold and silver mine. During the week, you can see holes being drilled to blast out the rock, to recover the gold/silver. Trucks driving out of pit carrying ore bearing rock, or waste rock, heading via the conveyor belt out to the processing plant, or tailings dam. Call in to Information Centre, at top of town, near Pumphouse, to get a map and more Info, also to view the Gold Story Room. Also, find times of blasts each weekday. Walk takes about an hour, and there are locals who do it every day. great views, of Coromandel and Kaimai Ranges, and Waihi town and countryside.
