Tired of fine dining? Tired of paying $150 or more for a meal out with a few glasses of wine/beer? Just want honest, down to earth honest to good Kiwi grub? THIS is the place to go.
Flash it is not. Trendy, no way. Just an honest Kiwi pub making its way in the world.
I asked the barman if he had been away from home for a few years, and wanted something on the menu that said "New Zealand" what would it be? Without hesitation he said "Scotch Fillet."
Bang on the money, cooked perfectly, with real chips (no French fries here) and seasoned to perfection. Three people, $90 including several beers/wines, and we had a great night out. GO HERE!! Tell them the guy from Seattle sent you! No, it wont get you a discount..........

Titled as the Miners Hotel, the Sterling Tavern is almost in a time warp. When we walked in I thought well it looks tidy, but almost unchanged since our visit of 3 years ago.

The lunch menu, which we had enjoyed in the past, is now dominated by typical fried food offerings and others that were so typical of pubs of yesteryears. We ordered the Seafood platter which turned out to be a heap of chips with various fried fish items that were very much factory processed frozen fish items. Not a great lunch and there are number of other cafes in Waihi offering excellent lunch menus and great food.

They do have a range of beers and cider on tap and wine can be ordered by the glass or the bottle. For a shared Seafood Platter, one handle of larger and a glass of cider $26.00.

So it you are Waihi and in need of a heap of greasies and/or an old-fashioned steak and chips; all washed down by a couple of beers then this could be the place for you. I image on a Saturday night with a bug Rugby game on, a few mates and a few rounds of beer that this would have heaps of atmosphere and a load of fun; but personally I won’t be back unless the menu has a total update.
