H10 Big Sur Boutique Hotel
Ranked #1 of 13 Hotels in Los Cristianos
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed 9 February 2013

We booked this hotel through Thomas Cook. It seems that either H10 Big Sur and/or Thomas Cook operate a policy of double booking in order to ensure the hotel is always full. When we arrived at Tenerife airport we were advised (as were two other couples) by the Thomas Cook rep that the hotel was fully booked and we would spend our first night at a different hotel in a different resort. We were then to get ourselves to H10 Big Sur the next day when the rep would discuss compensation.
On Day 2 we repacked and taxied to Los Cristianos to be told that we could not have our room until after 1 o'clock. The rep was coming at 12 but she would not see us until after her 'Welcome' meeting and selling the 'excursions' . Once she deemed to see us she advised that Thomas Cook would refund a day's room rate and arrange free wine and water at the evening meal for our entire holiday (which TC valued at 12 euros per night). She then wrote up the paperwork - we finally started our holiday mid afternoon on Day 2.
During the week we met other couples who had experienced the same, so it appears NOT to be a one-off mistake.
If Thomas Cook were BOTHERED about letting down their customers (it was our first experience of TC after 20 years with Thomson) the rep would have picked us and our luggage up at 10am on Day 2, have all the paperwork already completed , and arranged for H10 to prepare our rooms by 11am. As it was, we lost a day. Nice hotel in a good location with good food and nice staff - BUT BEWARE. Three couples out of 12 in our 'intake' lost a days holiday.
Also, I deliberately asked the rep if the wine was 'bottled' . She said 'bottled'. We got a karafe of house red plonk which had been watered down so much it was paler than the rose! It took two days of arguments with the waiters before they 'allowed' us to order a bottle and not have the karafe. I offered to pay the extra (although at 12 euros a day there shouldn't have been any extra to pay). The wine appeared on our final bill which we knocked off.
DON'T JUST BOOK IT - JUST DON'T BOOK IT!

Good afternoon,
On behalf of the H10 Big Sur Hotel Boutique, I would like to apologize that we did not meet your expectations.
Regarding the recently hotel change you suffered due to an unforeseen damage with a water pipe and unfortunately we were forced to arrange alternative accommodation for you and other arriving guests. I appreciate your flexibility as we experienced a nonstandard situation. Please be assured that the last thing we would ever want to do is upset or inconvenience our guests in any way and I am only too sorry that you were involved in this situation.
Customer feedback is very important to us. I would kindly ask for your apologize regarding the missunderstnading with the water and wine-compensation, I assure you that all departments involved have been informed of your complaints and corrective measures and evaluation are being taken. Thank you for allowing us to review and improve our operations according to your comments, I truly hope that you will give our hotel a second chance in the future and give us the opportunity to provide you with the excellent service that we are known for.
Sincerely

This hotel is very clean and the staff are exceptional at keeping it so.
We got off to a bad start, along with the rest of the Thomas Cook guests on our flight in that we were told very matter of factly that our rooms with sea view on a top floor, booked last June would not be available for 2 nights and we were allocated rooms on the 3rd floor overlooking the car park! Apparently the hotel was full and someone had clearly slipped up with the booking requirements. We heard that some guests had had to be taken to other hotels until their rooms were free! The reception staff at that point were downright rude. We were offered free safe and fridge and when our balcony door did not lock properly were given 6 bottles of San Miguel! As per previous comments the water supply was nearly cold and very very slow.
Now on to the restaurant or should I call it the canteen. Tables far too close together, so close we could have been in an episode of "Porridge". The drinks station was hazardous with people pushing in and being impatient. Too small a space for far too many guests. Breakfast choices were immense and the food options were excellent. Didn't like people slicing their own bread however - not very hygienic. If you weren't in there for 8am ish you had a real battle on your hands to find a free table. Can't comment on dinner as we refused to start queuing at 5.30pm so we ate out every night of our 10 day stay. On arriving back at approx 7.30pm - 8pm every night we observed that the restaurant was heaving and there appeared to be queues for tables. Other guests told us it was really difficult to attract a waiters attention for a drink, Clearly the hotel could not cope with the amount of guests they had overbooked.
The pool area was lovely but the bar prices were extortionate. 3.30 euros for a beer which was 90 cents- 1 euro just outside the hotel.
The air freshener was overpowering, my husband has allergies and sneezed a lot in the hotel.
Our room on the 7th floor had a magnificent view out to sea, the beds were comfy and the sheets were changed every 3 days. Again the water supply wasn't good and the toilet flush had episodes of running continually which maintenance couldn't seem to fix. We weren't on our own with this as we heard other guests reporting similar issues.
In short we don't go on holiday for 6 small bottles of free beer, free safe and fridge (which should be included anyway in a boutique hotel). We just want to receive what we paid for and we didn't which was a shame. In closing Thomas Cook had purchased rooms at this hotel in good faith, their rep. Natalie was nothing short of fantastic. The hotel and H10 group should be ashamed.

Room Tip: Book a top floor sea view and hope you get it!

Good afternoon and greetings from H10 Big Sur.
On behalf of the H10 Big Sur Hotel Boutique, I would like to apologize that we did not meet your expectations.
My apologies that the Room Allocation and subsequent difficulties were neither to yours nor my satisfaction, dear guest, but due to the complete occupancy of the hotel we were not able to offer a room change but in this case we were unable to resolve the difficulty you experienced.
We have a rolling refurbishment project in place with the rooms most in need being constantly refreshed and following the issues highlighted your room will be made a priority. We also start refurbishing the corridors starting as soon as possible and afterwards the restant rooms as quickly as possible.
Customer feedback is very important to us. I assure you that all departments have been informed of your complaints and corrective measures and evaluation are being taken. Our opening times for breakfast and dinner are over an extended period of time to cater with the resorts high occupancy, noting that we do encourage guests to dine earlier or later to ensure they miss the higher volume period of 6.30 – 8.00 pm but even in peak times you will find a table available - may be not in the position you prefer, outside on the terrace, or in the back of the restaurant.
Thank you for allowing us to review and improve our operations according to your comments, I truly hope that you will give our hotel a second chance in the future and give us the opportunity to provide you with the excellent service that we are known for.
Sincerely
Gabi Wessels

A disappointing 4-night stay in Feb 2013. We had assumed that a ‘boutique, adults only’ hotel would be more upmarket at that price. I agree with the comments from another reviewer about the age profile of the majority of guests at this time of year – a bit like staying in a Care Home.
We booked 5 months in advance for ‘This bright air-conditioned room offers wonderful sea views. It has a flat screen TV etc. etc.’ We were allocated room 110. As this is on the first floor, the sea could only be glimpsed through the trees. There was an old fashioned, chunky TV and the wardrobe was so small that the safe and the spare bedding occupied almost all the space. All this would have been tolerable except that, from time to time, the air-conditioning emitted strong smells of cigarette smoke. We accepted the offer of room 204 on the second floor. This was a mistake as the air-conditioning system was no better. Room 204 is on the back of the hotel so we exchanged the sun and the partial sea view for an inland view, no sun and the noise from the hotel entrance and road - plus the smell of fags. We were not able to get a refund although the hotel ‘generously’ included the cost of safe and fridge hire.
The first and second floor corridors are tired and shabby with unidentified stains on the carpets. None of the rooms we saw had flat screen TVs. The bathroom fittings in 204 were old and worn out and, although the room seemed very clean, we found a cockroach in the bathroom.
Our other main complaint was about the overpowering smell of chemical air-freshener in the lobby. It was so strong that it affected our taste buds within seconds and could well have been the cause of the constant headaches I suffered whilst at the hotel.
On the plus side, the staff were quite friendly and the pool area was good. The breakfast was plentiful and varied although the coffee and juice arrangements were irritating and produced poor quality beverages. (We did not use the other facilites.)
Overall summary: this is probably a reasonable choice if you are on a package deal and want a hotel with activities laid on. If you are travelling independently you may feel that you are paying top price for average quality.

Room Tip: High floor rooms at the front would have a better view. This is a very old building which has been...

Dear guests,
First of all, we thank you for choosing the Hotel H10 Big Sur for your stay in Tenerife and for the review you posted in Tripadvisor.

In the H10 Big Sur moves us the satisfaction of our customers and we always strive to offer the best possible service to ensure a pleasant stay, sorry that we have not been able to meet your expectations.

Regarding the state of maintenance of the rooms, it is true that the H10 Big Sur is an older hotel requiring tokens of affection for our part. The hotel is in a constant process of refurbishment to adapt all our rooms to the latest standards. by the way we already finished the updates and renovations such as a completely new restaurant, Cactus Bar, Hall, reception and common areas as well as most of the rooms. In the renovated rooms you will find the plasma flat TV, Nespresso Coffee-Machine, Alarm clock-Radio for I-phone and a bright and modern furniture with mediterranean touch. We continue in the medium term planning to reform the restant rooms and corridors during the year 2013 in order to offer all our guests new facilities, modern and practical for your holidays.
The air freshener is in the entire hotel and eject a nice fresh scent to create an atmosphere of well-being throughout the hotel, is the first time a customer has complained for this reason, we will look after that!
Nevertheless, we appreciate your opinions and comments, as constructive criticism is the only way to know the reality and to improve quality, services as well as facilities, to avoid future complaints for the same reason like yours.

We sincerely hope that we will get another opportunity to welcoming you at the H10 Big Sur and propose you the best of our attention, meanwhile we remain,
Sincerely yours

My wife and i flew in from Lanzarote for a three night stay. After a 5 hour journey by plane and taxi,we arrived at Big Sur where a drink at reception would have been quite welcome as is the custom at the H10 hotels we have stopped at over the last ten years
The 1st impression was of a well kept Hotel and gardens.
Sadly this was short lived when we got into Reception, the staff there were quite ill- mannered and obviously not well trained in people skills.
To cut a long story short i had to phone H10 in Barcelona to resolve our problem. This spoilt it for my wife and i sadly.
Gabi Wessels was informed of this by letter and E mail to which she declined to answer.!
On to the good points the room we had was very good and clean as was the bathroom, the maid was very well mannered and polite. On the 6th floor the hot water took 10 minutes to run warm.
Ther restaurant was very efficient,we stayed b/b the food was good with a good joice of food to suit everyone.
As for the hotel being full of old people i thought this was out of order, and not very kind to people who had possibly worked hard all their lives,
with the hotel being for couples only, it is to be expected the guests would be of an older type of person, i would say the average would be 40 or over.
The pool area and gardens were immaculate and well maintained, well done. The thing that stuck out to me and my wife was that clients were not allowed to put towels on beds before 10 a m..
Being Grand Class members of the H10 club for many years my wife were mainly well pleased with this hotel apart from Reception. Thank you.

Dear guests,
First, apologize for the delay in replying to your mail.
We would like to thank you having taken the time to give your feedback on Tripadvisor about your stay at the H10 Big Sur.

Our daily target is to be able to offer guests the maximum quality and efficiency in the service we provide, in order for our guests to enjoy a pleasant and relaxing holiday amongst us. I am sorry that we have not been able to accomplish our objective in your case, but we have been looking into the issues you have kindly taken the time to raise.
In regard to the service provided by the Reception, please give us the opportunity to apologize for the inconveniences caused; our reception staff is very helpful as well as very efficient but in the moment in time when you wanted to pay for
your stay with accumulated points, the card account was not updated and took about 15 minutes time to perform this process with our Head Office in Barcelona. I am aware that our Reception Manager personally took charge of this issue and once she got the confirmation, she got in contact with you in your room to inform you and to proceed with the corresponding charge.
We are really sorry that this simple bureaucratic process has taken so long causing your displeasure.
Nevertheless, we appreciate your opinions and comments, as constructive criticism is the only way to know the reality and to improve quality, services as well as facilities, to avoid future complaints for the same reason like yours.

Thank you again for having chosen our hotel, we sincerely hope you will give a second opportunity to compensate your unfortunate experience and we hope to have the opportunity to welcome you again in the H10 Big Sur.

Should you consider visiting us again, please inform me prior to your arrival so as to be able to welcome you and your wife in the manner and style you most certainly deserve.

Sincerely yours,
Gabi Wessels

My wife and I have just returned from a weeks stay at this hotel.Firstly let me say we booked via thomas cook....... our `TC` rep `Natalie` was fantastic, and restored my faith in holiday reps.......she was always in contact and made sure any problems were quickly and professionally remedied.unfortunately we had to call in her services very early ,as firstly our sea view rooms were not available!!!!!we had booked many months ago so were amazed as to how this could happen....... we were then offered a 2nd floor room overlooking a car park, which we flatly refused, this was then upped with the `oh so tempting` offer of free safe and fridge.Again we refused. The next stage was to give us a top floor room for two days(NO sea view)with the promise of sea view room after two days ,which we then accepted. We were led to believe there were several others who faced the `front desk showdown` over non availability of sea view rooms................
This hotel is billed as a `boutique` hotel ................ so you don`t expect to have room availability issues for something you are paying a premium for.
At this stage let me say that there was not a great deal of proffesionalism on front desk by some of staff................ BUT all other areas were great.....housekeeping,catering,cooking,waiting staff etc .........all very pleasant .

It would seem that `boutique` is being used where the phrase mildly refurbished would be more accurate...............
In this day and age ....paying for a domestic size fridge which has a lock on it,that in some rooms would only open about 12 inches and then jam against end of bed DOH!
Also having to pay for safes...... ok in cheap 3 star hotel but in boutique....Hmmmmm
In higher floors hardly any head of water ,therefore miserable shower pressure.....boutique?
Other than BBC world news/sky world news ..NO UK channels.......boutique!!
As mentioned in previous reviews..... tea/coffe facilities in room....feeble plus eventually chargeable.....boutique...!
some aspects of decor were good but others were `toshed` up prevous incarnations of older ,sadder fixtures.........
beware the headboard mounted reading light ! ,when you go to adjust it,by reaching upward above your head you will get a nasty burn as outside bulb cover is burning hot!!!!
Air conditioning was absolutely feeble........
food was ok but try and get freshly cooked items where possible......

there were other areas which could be `nit picking` but I suppose what i`m trying to put across is that the sales pitch is for a child free, boutique hotel ........ the reality is that you are paying ,in some cases,a hefty premium for only a marginal improvement in quality compared to `Regular` hotels.
Lack of attention to detail and more modern expectation is what has let the big sur down, when it could have been a real contender in the quest to be ahead of the competition.

Myself and partner (Andy) stayed in the above hotel from the 15thJan to 22ndJan.
Journey was excellent, no delays this time with Thomas Cook. Greeting on arrival at hotel was warm but i did ask if we good have an iron which was declined and was told the hotel offered a washing, drying cleaning and ironing service which was extremely pricey. We did find out later from the rep that you could hire a iron and ironing board for 15euros for the week which we did.
Hotel, I must admit is for OLD OLD people. We are in our 50's and were the youngest there, hence the entertainment was for an older age. Hotel was filled with wheel chairs, and simmer frames where ever you went. But thank god there was loads of bars just outside the hotel that had lots of tribute acts on every night. (not sure if we would have survived without this option though)
The young girl who did the day time activties at the hotel was EXECELLENT. She had a very hard hard job to do. I didnt get involved but partner Andy did. I watched closely and felt she gave it her all with many English complaining- some even complained that the activities were geared for OLD PEOPLE-, thats all that was there, so i am not sure what they expected. Every activity was covered, from excerise classes to bowls , snooker the lot. I felt very sorry for her.
Please note management staff- she tried her best.
We decided to go half board - which was okay- breakfast was a bit bland though.
No problems with sunbeds and the Chill out zone on the roof is well worth a visit.
I do hope to go back to los Cristianos in September- not sure if we will stay at H10 though.
Would be nice to find a Thomas Cook Adults Only holiday - that caters for a younger age. between a 40 to 60 age group would be great.

We will forward your congratulation to Misha, our Wellness&Sports-Entertainer, she is really doing a good job, all clients are pleased with her!
This hotel is an “Adults only” what means that young couples with children are not booking our installations and specially during the winter season, older = retired people are travelling, as well as this hotel dispose of 2 accessible rooms for disabled guests, what means that it is easy to see a disabled person in our hotel – but clients change from Easter Week onwards, younger couple are travelling!

Thank you again for having chosen our hotel, we sincerely hope you consider to give us the opportunity to welcome you again in the not too far future to H10 Big Sur!

We chose this hotel primarily because it was adults only, but also because you stepped outside the gardens onto the promenade, so no hills.
Upgraded to a sea view on the 4th floor to get views of the harbour. Paid extra to get a fridge and coffee maker. They only provided 4 capsules and no milk, and you paid 1 euro for each additional capsule.
We found the restaurant very disappointing. Most of the food on the buffet was not warm, although you could get your bacon as well as eggs cooked to order, but this meant queueing. There were long queues at the coffee machines in the morning.
To get warm food we tended to have the meat or fish cooked that was to order in the evening. They would also stir fry vegetables which was Ok if not drowned in a sauce. The fish always looked of the same type, except when they had sardines, who wants sardines in the evening. The meat was nearly always pork or chicken, didn't see beef or lamb the whole week.
They did a roast one evening. Felt they were only using cheap food and being very careful. The spanish ham was shredded into thin strips on starters served in little pots, and similarly with prawns.
If you arrived in the middle of the evening there was no cheese left. I asked for some, and after some time they brought out thin slices of the tasteless cheese they served in the mornings.
There are restaurants close by which we ended up using after checking out what was being served that evening.
Would only recommend the hotel on a room only basis.

Dear guests,
Thank you for taking the time to review our hotel on this website. I sincerely hope that you enjoyed your first visit to the H10 Big Sur. All comments are always well received and used for improving, as the guest feedback helps us detecting certain areas which might require improvement.
We are very sorry that our food was not to your liking. Food is clearly subjective. You know that we daily offer a hot and cold buffet, for breakfast and dinner, with plenty of choice, and the selection of food is amazing, there is a change in selection at the buffet every night, in case that something is not warm enough for your taste, we also have a microwave in the dining area next to the Show Cooking, where our Chef´s prepair for you whatever you want and how you want it – without any doubt, if you prefer the fresh prepared dishes you have to wait for them!
Since this January, we provide to all our guests daily the Nespresso Coffee Machine with 2 free capsules of coffee and milk if you need more you, you can buy them at Reception.

We truly appreciate your comments towards our establishment and sincerely hope that you will consider a return visit to the H10 Big Sur. I would be really pleased to have a talk with you!
Please receive my kindest regards,
