“Nice Hotel - Car Hire is essential”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 2 March 2011

Stayed at this hotel in December 2009.

The Hotel and grounds are lovely and very pleasant, they are clean and well maintained. The room itself was lovely and it appeared as if the hotel was "new".

We hired a car and there was ample parking outside the hotel. The hotel is in quite a bad location, if you were on foot it would take about 20 minutes or so to walk into Los Cristianos Centre, we had a car so it was not a problem for us.

Did try some buffet food at the hotel which was very nice but a bit pricey, much cheaper in Los Cristianos.

The only problem we encountered in this hotel was cockroaches in our room, to be honest this is expected anywhere in Tenerife but I still hate them. They seemed to appear at night time in the bathroom and they are HUGE ! I telephoned reception and about ten minutes later some lady appeared with bug spray and just handed it to me at the door, she would not even come in ! Anyway the spray seemed to work.

The hotel has a lovely pool and I would definitly stay there again

We have just had a really nice week at Villa Mandi - we were given ana partment just next to the small kid's play area and it was fabulous because we could sit on the terrace and watch them play safely. Pools are clean and spacious - only the baby pool appeared heated and the others were freezing. The apartments are huge and clean, but perhaps need a little TLC. I did think it was cheeky to ask for payment for WiFi and TV. We would recommend finding a restaurant that does WiFi for free and get the password, then return there and use when required! The Villa Mandi resort is definitely a wee bit out of the way but we enjoyed the walk into town at night and taxi back later on. Only four or five euros. We were just happy not to be in the middle of tackyness and enjoyed the quiet. The weather in february is not guaranteed and we found this out with a couple of overcast days, but then the sun well and truly came out and it was a great temperature for little 'uns. The kid's facilities - well, we had issues with thomsons since they advertise this as a family resort and really there is only the mini golf, pools and play area - all to be supervised by parents. If it hadn't been for the fabulous Sun Garden Scandanavian club, our 9 year old would have had little contact with other kids. The Thomson kids club is easily seen but boarded up. The Sun Garden Club allowed our kids to go and play football etc with them but it wasn't suitable for our 3 year old so we got no time together as a couple on our own. I have raised issues about this with Thomson, but they still advertise it as a family resort all year round - just be careful and do not expect any shows or entertainment, kids clubs etc until May. If this was introduced even on a part-time basis through the winter months it would be a huge bonus. We would like to return next Easter as we loved this place, but still no kids' clubs until a few weeks after we intend to go. I would recommend, but do not go to tenerife in Feb if you are desperate for sunshine and do not go to Villa mandi if you want supervised, kid's facilities.

We visited Villa Mandi (4 familie's, 8 adults and 5 children) mainly as i had wanted to stay there for a long time, the hotel its self is lovely, very clean, spacious rooms, lovely pools, parks, gardens etc... Kids entertainers fabulous!!! and games round the pool during the day for adults were great too!!! We knew the exact location of the hotel on booking so we knew we had a 20-25 minute walk into resort every night and a taxi trip back wich did not bother us at all, unfortunately we had planned to spend most day times at the pool wich would have meant using the restraunt for all our daytime meals and they were not good at all, the menu was extremely limited and the food was so bland and all tasted of nothing, the hotel does not have anything around it food wise so we ended up having that walk on a morning too, we did use Mercadona to stock up on some light snacks and cook ourselves but to be honest i cook every day at home so did not wish do to this on holiday, also weather was naff for 7 out of the 14 days wich i have never ever had there in June in all my visits so not one of my better holidays but all in all a very good hotel, if your happy to cook on holiday it would be fine though, i think due to the location they really need to cater better when people dont have the option to just wander over the road to eat, they really should be cashing in on that, as i said there were 13 of us who would have ate and drank there all day for the whole holiday so lots of lost revenue there, on the plus side its a great place for families, especially smaller children, kids club was fab too, i would recommend this hotel to anybody but car hire would be a great idea.

We (me, my wife and 1- and 3-year old boys) stayed at the Villa Mandi for one week during February 2011. Our general impression of the hotel was very positive. The location was the only real drawback. Although it has been mentioned in the previous reviews that the location is not central, we were suprised that there was NOTHING nearby. If you are heading straight down to the center of los Cristianos, the first kilometer is just a road through wasteland with no street lights on during the night time. Not a single building on the way to the main road behind which the central area of Los Cristianos begins. The walk to the Los Cristianos center takes about 20 minutes, and taxi costs 4.50 euros. However, you can also walk along the border of the golf course to the direction of las Americas. When selecting this route, you will pass the other hotels next to the golf course, and find a commercial center with shops, supermarkets and good quality restaurants after only about 10 minutes walk. Another 10-15 minutes takes you to the las Americas (straight) or to Playa de las Vistas (turn left). We really preferred this route after discovering it.

The hotel itself consists of four different areas/blocks of buildings. The lowest block located nearest to the ocean has a beautiful garden and an excellent playground for children over three years old. This is where our room (107) was located. The next area towards the mountains is the main pool and reception area. There is a large, clean and beautiful adult pool and a smaller baby pool that had warm water. Lots of space and free sun loungers throughout the day. The main restaurant is located next to the pool (you may sit outside or inside). The next area has another adult pool. The fourth area, which is on the highest level nearest to the mountains includes a minigolf course and a smaller playground for younger children.

The buildings are 3-4 storey high. Our room was on the ground floor. There was a small terrace/ground area with table and chairs, but no privacy at all. All the children were constantly running with their parents to the playground in front of our terrace which was also the only entrance to the room. This was a disappointment. We were not spending any time at our terrace during our holiday and mostly had to keep the curtains closed. Same applied to almost all of the other ground floor apartments: if there was no playground, there was a pool or minigold just next to your terrace with no fence giving privacy. Thus, if you are able to walk up the stairs (no elevators in room blocks) and would like at least some privacy, I’d HIGHLY recommend to request a room from the second or third floor. Most of the rooms facing garden and pool are also facing the golf course, and I suspect that there would be a view also to the golf course from the higher floors. Some of the rooms were facing to the road, and thus have a view to the wasteland and mountains.

Otherwise our room was very nice. To European standards, it was extremely spacious. E.g. the master bedroom had 240 cm wide king bed and lots of space around. Bathroom had two sinks and a separate space for toilet and bidet. Our only complaint inside the room concerned the cleaning. There were small pieces of glass on the floor throughout our stay. The housekeeping washed the floor every day, but this obviously did not remove the small pieces of glass.

We had paid for the breakfast in advance. The quality and variety was excellent. Especially concerning the hot dishes (two types of bacon, sausages, deep-fried onions, omelets as you like, etc), breads and pastries. However, the selection of fresh fruits was quite limited (two sorts). We ate the buffet only one night when they had barbeque. Charcoal grill was nice, but the quality did not meet our expectations. They had beef, chicken and lamb which tasted ok, but the side dishes were typical buffet style (fries, salads). The dinners in the restaurants of Los Cristianos provided much better quality for the money. Actually this hotel buffet dinner was the most expensive that we ate during our holiday although we normally ordered three courses with wine.

In conclusion, an excellent hotel with beautiful gardens and pools, spacious and good quality rooms. Just be prepared to the distant location, and consider avoiding ground level apartments and hotel dinner.

This is a nice hotel, but just be careful which room you're given.

We made a request for a quiet room as we have a light-sleeping toddler. Unfortunately, for reasons known only to Thomson, this request didn't make its way to the hotel. Therefore we were put in a two-bedroomed apartment which was lovely but right next to the road. The road isn't a main road but there were bin lorries early in the morning, motorbikes and taxis in the middle of the night, most of which woke him (and therefore us) up. The rooms aren't double glazed and having the windows shut doesn't seem to block out much noise at all. All of us struggled to get back to sleep numerous times every night, and have therefore returned more tired than when we went. We were also being stressed out every time he woke about him waking the rest of the block up. Not the aim of going on holiday.

If we'd had a different room, it would have meant a completely different holiday. The pools and grounds were lovely, but our room location wasn't. The hotel staff told us that we couldn't move rooms as they were fully booked. The Thomson rep was no help either, he told us we were unable to swop. I complained to the rep and also Thomson's holiday line, but was just fobbed off with "well, special requests aren't guaranteed". Fair enough, but at least send the special request to the hotel then we might have stood a chance!

There are a couple of playgrounds in the hotel which we found useful. Also a baby paddling pool and a children's swimming pool. The children's pool looked rather cloudy so we avoided that after a few days. We noticed babies and toddlers using it without swimming nappies on, not very hygienic, and nobody seemed to pick them up on it. There were plenty of sunbeds though, I think the sunbed problems are perhaps in peak season when there are lots of families about.

We only ate in the hotel once, for an evening meal, but weren't very impressed with it. It was pretty bland to be honest. One of the starters was a pasta salad which consisted of pasta mixed with mayonaisse and decorated with swirls of tomato ketchup, that about says it all. Not particularly appealing. There was no vegetarian main course, about 3 types of meat and one type of fish. The desserts were about the best bit but were only really average.

There are some good places to eat in town though, we had a couple of nice pizzas and ate in two different places with set menus and the food was very good - certainly cheaper and a lot better than the hotel. We recommend an Italian ice cream place near Burger King - called something like Gelandia. Loads of flavours of lovely ice cream!

We didn't go on any trips (we were too tired...) so can't say a lot about those. We found Los Cristianos to be a bit big to manage, we never got to look around the whole resort. That's just a personal thing though, there's nothing wrong with the resort, we just prefer to stay somewhere smaller that we can get to know a bit better.

All in all, a decent hotel with well-equipped rooms, just make sure you're not next to the road if anybody's a light sleeper and maybe avoid the hotel food. If you make a special request with Thomson, I'd suggest checking they haven't lost it before you travel.....

Initially we were very disappointed with Villa Mandi, but things did improve later in the week. We were given room 227, above the kitchen service entrance. If given this room refuse it as its location is horrendous. Bins put out early in the evening just outside balcony - lovely - and to make things worse they are collected every morning at approx 2.45am. Having a young child with us this was not suitable at all. When we asked if we could move (next morning) we were told it was full and we couldn't move for 4 days. If it was full we don't know where everyone was. Pool area very quiet sunbeds whenever you wanted one. Arriving at 4pm we were all hungry but the restaurant was closed and there is nowhere nearby so we had to buy at the on site mini market, very expensive. Walked down to supermarket next day and shopped for the week!! After eventually moving apartments things did improve and the last 3 days were much better, maybe due to the fact that we could sleep. Shuttle bus doesn't go to Los Cristianos as it says, it drops off at Cristianos end of Las Americas, why don't they just say that?
5 yr old enjoyed trip to Loro Park even though it poured down all day, it's probably better when the sun shines and everything is up and running there. Thought it was a bit expensive when not everything was available. Most of the cafes were closed as well.
Overall though, we did enjoy our holiday and made the best of it at the beginning, but had we been able to change rooms straight away things would have been better.
As the pool was so quiet our grandaughter had a great time, it was 'heated' as well. It was still a bit chilly but warmer than others on site - but it's not quite the size that the brochures suggest
Would we go back? Not with our grandaughter as there wasn't much there for her, the kids club was for Scandanavians but they did let her go to their mini-disco. but maybe we'd go back on our own if the price was right. It was a bit expensive for what was provided there, so maybe a late offer would tempt us as the layout was good and the grounds and rooms kept spotless.
