Review of Auroville Bakery

Auroville Bakery
Ranked #3 of 15 Dessert in Pondicherry
Certificate of Excellence
Price range: US$0 - US$21
Cuisines: French
Description: When you are far away from home, you miss certain things. Auroville, in the middle of the eastern world, is full of people from the western world. As rice is the most common food in Asia, Europeans and Americans hardly find their favourites: bread and good cake. Fortunately Auroville is not a blank spot on the culinary map, as it has the most delightful bakery in the whole area. Here your cravings for all kinds of bread and pastry can be fulfilled; sweet dreams come true. But how did it all start? Meanwhile, in the main bakery, the first non-Aurovilian workers were employed. They also had to learn from zero. The working circumstances were bad. One oven under a keet roof, no walls, wooden fences, a frame for a second oven, but the metal parts had to be shared. And, of course, termites and rats. "Professionals shook their heads. We had to move the bread up to 3 times from oven to oven, from here to there. A wonder it was eatable", says Otto. Together with Jean-Denis he kept the operation going, and with the increasing income from cookies and biscuits plus a loan from Aurelec they were able to build a new Auroville Bakery in Douceur, where it is still situated.

“You get authentic stuff here”
Reviewed 30 July 2014

Be it croissants, brownies, tarts, french bread... it's all authentic and you get it all for a very reasonable price. They dont have dine-in and not too many options, maybe about 10-20 items to pick from but whatever they serve it's assured to be excellent. Usually open from 7am till 5pm. Closed on sundays. Not a fancy bakery but has its own charm of an authentic bakery. It would be a miss if you are fond of good food and skip the place.

“Best chocolate croissant and bread”
Reviewed 15 July 2014

You can get good and fresh bread for a concorrential price, good croissants (I like the chocolate and the cinnamon ones) for a good price. The price of the cakes is a bit higher and they're not excellent - remember they're not typical south indian products!
I suggest to try the atta-maida bread, difficult to get it sometimes. The employees are nice.

“Yummylicious!”
Reviewed 9 July 2014

Absolutely mouth watering desserts. They also have very good pizzas. Try their chocolate croissants they are to die for. We bought one and couldn't resist ourselves to buy another one. A must try.

“Blink! and its a big miss!”
Reviewed 30 May 2014

The entrance to this bakery used to be very discreet and easily missed. The location has now shifted to a few yards away from the older place and the bakery is a little more modern, but the food is still outstanding. It is best to go first thing in the morning - croissants, tarts and banana bread is fresh off the oven. There is also some place to sit but its better as a take away spot. Soe of the old world charm remains and the smell is superb!
