I wanted to visit Pondicherry ashram from long time so when i had trip to chennai i immediately booked my weekend for Pondicherry. Since I was traveling alone I was scared and did a lots of review on net finally i settled for some asharam guest house. It was weekend so The PArk guesthouse was booked, I was guided to New Guest house which is recent entry to Ashram Guest List. Initially staff was skeptical abt me visiting alone, but later they were very friendly and very helpful and cooperative.I took single non Ac room, it was Spotless clean nice and spacious room.they have small beautiful small garden inside. Food was Avg but hygienic. Over all Awesome experience. they provide cycle on rent. Guest house is just 2 mins from beach . beach can not be view form hotel room but in case u have rooms on left side you would be able to see the light house. I took lots of memorable moments from this trip back home

Room Tip: USe there Cycle rentals its 50 rs per day. Their check-i check out time is 10 AM so plan ur arrival...

Be prepared for spartan settings. There are no lifts, no room service, no hot water in the rooms.
Besides, that, it is a neat little place to put up and save costs, if you plan to be out exploring Pondicherry for most of your vacation. The rooms are decent, though there are no cupboards, only wall shelves. They have quaint names, and some have balconies. There is a lot of greenery in the courtyard.
The rules are strict - it shuts early, no outside food/ drinks are permitted, meal times are to be strictly followed.
The staff are polite and helpful, within the limited rules. Very close to the promenade next to the beach. So well located and inexpensive. Almost worth the money.

The guest house is very comfortable and well maintained. It is very neat and clean and rooms are very decent for the price charged. Food at the guest house is tasty and very reasonable. The location of the guest house is also good with the sea front very close by.

Taking note of the fact that this place was built with an aim to house the devotees and Ashram visitors, this place goes by it's own rules to accommodate them in peace. To those who adhere to the basic tenets of any Indian pilgrimage, by staying off alcohol, meat and staying by standard Indian dressing style, there can be no better place. In my opinion (and we have visited quite a bunch of such accommodation), this place is far more relaxed than the others in the genre.

The rooms are basic without TV, very clean and mostly peaceful unless there is a disturbing neighbor. Hot water has to be fetched from a tap nearby, available all through the day. Get your essentials. Bed sheets and towels are provided, though own towels make a better choice. No lifts to carry luggage. Cycles can be rented in-house. The location is quite serene, very near tithe promenade in the French quarter, with access to most European style food.

We saw nothing much of cons here, having said that, as a family of four (we and my in-laws), we had no problems sticking to the rules. Some staff might not be very inviting, though, the guards and other personnel were quite friendly with us. Food is very basic. No Indian fare to be found around. Other than a small Indian coffee kiosk nearby and the man who sells coffee each morning at the door, finding good coffee is difficult.

Pluses

- It is a 2 minute walk from the south end of the promenade, and close to eating joints such as La Terrace, some pub called Asian House, the petrol pump, and a liquor shop with touristy rates that's patronized by foreigners and Indian weekend tourists.
- I had a non AC double room with a balcony for 200 Rs. A good nights sleep, very clean bed sheets and bath room.. Neither sparse nor fancy but cozy and clean.

Cons
- Making phone or internet bookings is virtually impossible unless you are an Ashramite but that arrangement is another story. I've tried to make advance bookings for friends but they've refused saying 'Let them come and check in. If there are rooms, they will get it'
- They are quite particular about the Rights of Admission. This is an Ashram guesthouse and they will say rooms are full if you're not so savory in their eyes.
- A few people find the atmosphere strange and unfriendly especially in the reception where you will get icy cold stares if you dare walk in without taking off your shoes. It does come across as pretentiously spiritual and very snobbish however I'd overlook these irritants because it's clean, safe, central and cheap. And honestly, they aren't in for profits or networking so that negates the need to be over friendly to passing tourists.
- A 10 pm curfew means that you'll have to return on time. Most Ashram guest houses in Pondi have this curfew.

Tips

- you could eat their in-house breakfasts and meals, but I strongly recommend buying a daily food coupon for Rs 20 to eat at the Ashram Dining Hall near Bharathi Park. Ask for these coupons at the reception. It's an amazing communal vibe worth experiencing. Healthy food like yoghurt, dal with vegeatables, porridge (5.30pm dinner)
- Every room will have big pictures of The Mother staring down at you right across your bed. Don't fret or get unnerved -- you will be meeting many of her pictures all through your sojourn in Pondichery
- They hire cycles that you can lock up safely in the basement at night, but in case you've hired a cycle from outside, you'd have to risk parking it outside on the street.
