“Little Gem - Amazing little boutique hotel”
Reviewed 2 July 2013

Our friends with 3 children recommended this hotel and it has far exceeded our expectations.

The rooms are so tastefully and beautifully decorated, modern, yet keeping within the style and tradition of the building. (It has only been opened since the beginning of the year so is quite new)

It is one of the few hotels that also has a pool, which is mostly in shade which is great for our kids who are aged 2 & 6

It is centrally located in the French Quarter so is an easy walk to most things like the beach, upmarket shops and restaurants and if you need to go further like the markets an auto rickshaw is always available which the hotel can organise.

It has a spa centre which we didnt get to try but if it is anything like the rest of the hotel would be great

The staff all have warm smiles and are genuinely pleased and happy to help. Fantastic with our children

The food was delicious and very accomodating to the children's tastes. Resturarant is on the second floor and gets cool breezes.

This will be our weekend escape from Chennai over the next 3 years.

Room Tip: If you have kids probably stay on the 1st or second floor as the pool is on the first floor. We stay...

Very quaint , peaceful and yet extremely well located place to stay . We were a group of 3 families , 2 of whom had small kids and the hotel was quite willing to go out of its way to help us . The breakfast served out on the verandah is excellent , and allows you to linger over cups of tea/ lassi . This is extremely close to the promenade - great to take morning / evening walks .
The rooms are HUGE , very well maintained and the entire focus is on relaxation . There is a nice pool as well . Will definitely stay here when we go to Pondicherry again

Room Tip: The ground floor rooms open out on to the pool so any other floow would probably be quieter . Having...

What a place!!! The rooms are large and spotless and make you feel like you are in a old bungalow, with all the modern conveniences. There are only 18 rooms, so attention is really personal. There is a nice size pool which is great for relaxing after a day around town. I can't say enough about the location - the beach, shopping, paper museum, eateries are all walking distance from the hotel...if your not up for the walk, there are cycles you can borrow from the hotel.
The food at the restaurant was really outstanding, had the fish tikka and prawn masala for starters, which was really really fresh and tasty!!! For mains my wife had the bacon wrapped fish and I had mixed platter of sea food - again both dishes were exceptional.

A short + sudden trip took us to Chennai and then to Pondicherry. This accounts for the experience we had.

Lovely welcome by Elizabeth and Seetha. We were welcomed with traditional garland of Mogra which itself was trancedental. Checkin was smooth and the rooms were awesome.

All 3 days the food we had in the inhouse restaurant was ambrosia. Credit to the chef from Kerala and yes to Saravanan + Sathya + Nizamuddhin S.R.

The rooms were clean and tidy, with an ecological imprint to use more earthy products. All credit to Arun Kumar and his team.

And yes 5 Stars to Dinu Ramakrishnan the General Manager for his lovely and personal care and touch, during our stay.

Also since this hotel is situated about 5 minutes from the beach front, it makes it an ideal location. Its the right location to be in privacy and yes still near to the beach.

Will always recommend this hotel to families with children. Homely attitude and the warmth will always make you feel good and contended.

And yes, the only thing we felt that the hotel needed was extended pool timings. The current ones are from morning 8am to 8pm, we feel they can start at 7am.

Room Tip: Choose rooms on the first floor.

It was my first trip to India so I really didn't know what to expect. I had business in Auroville but also wanted to experience the rich history of Pondi so I chose Palais de Mahe as my destination. I was so glad I did! My room was spacious, tastefully decorated and met all of my personal needs. The food was amazing--loved the pool! What stood out the most was the attentive and courteous staff. As a business traveler I have high expectations for and reliance upon expert local knowledge, transportation, security and timing of arrangements to make the most of my trip and services offered by the hotel. Palais' exceptional guest relations expert, Vikas Damodaran, ensured I had and knew everything I needed in order to make my long journey to India a success. His positive "can-do" attitude made a huge difference! I plan on returning to India and to Palais de Mahe again in the future. Who knows? Maybe next time I'll have more time to spend poolside...

We stayed here at the end of March and it is one of the best heritage hotels we have stayed at in India. It is newly opened - so much so that there are still some finsihng touches to be done with soft furnishings and they have not yet got their alcohol licence - neither of these things detracted from our stay. The room was simple but very well done and comfortable (a/c provided), the pool area is lovely and the food from breakfast through to dinner was excellent - served in their open area on the top floor. The staff were extremely helpful, friendly and knowledgeable and the position in the French quarter just two blocks from the seafront couldn't be better. We looked at other hotels on our walks around the town and I wouldn't stay anywhere else should I return to Pondi.

Room Tip: Room 208 is the only room with it's own balcony but it is at the front of the hotel and there is...

Since 2003 we are spending january-march in South India and mostly at CGH Earth properties. They are eco-friendly, charming, perfectly maintained and have a staff of excellence. After a very enjoyable stay at Marari Beach Resort ( 7/1/2013 -30/1 ) and a week travelling to Munnar and Thanjavur we spend 24 days ( 6/2-2/3 at the new CGH Earth hotel , Palais de Mahé in Pondicherry ( opened in december 12, 2012 ). This beautiful mansion is strategically located in the French Quarter within walking distance to the beach, key attractions, restaurants and the Tamil Quarter. With its unique architecture in French colonial style, its 18 spacious rooms and patios this royal palace is stylish and elegantly decorated. Our room 206 was palatial, clean and quiet with a large king bed, a sitting area , dual airconditioning and fans and a nice view on the lovely swimming pool. On the main level the hotel has a cafe where they sell excellent coffees, and sandwiches. Breakfast was just perfect . The restaurant serves delicious seafood dishes.Manager Dinu Ramakrishnan and his friendly and efficient staff are so warm and accomodating that you feel home. A special mention to Arun Kumar and the house keeping staff for making our room a joy to live in.

We highly recommend this hotel and will be back next year.

Our warmest thanks and kind regards to all the staff for an unforgettable stay.

Rolande and Jean-Paul Butzler
