Owner description: Juan and Samai Reboul, born in a small village off the coast of Spain, were not introduced to the world of surfing until they moved to Auroville, India in 95, at the ages of 9 and 10. It was here that a group of surfing pioneers allowed them their own boards with which they could plunge into their newfound passion, unaware that this would lead them towards their present situation. As years went by, their enthusiasm for surfing grew and soon they found themselves with a notorious reputation for their loud voices, large fin-like noses and the habit of ditching school to catch some waves. Today, their old teachers still laugh about how, on several occasions, they unsuccessfully attempted to drag the two boys off their boards and into class (the brothers were apparently oblivious to the shouting figures on the beach). Soon Juan and Samai realised that they wanted to make their passion into their profession, at which point they started giving classes to children and teenagers of Auroville and Pondicherry. Any lapses in their teaching abilities were filled when they helped out at their friends' surf school in south-west France. Gathered from their various experiences in the world of surf, Kallialay Surf School (KASS) was created in January 2009 as one of the first surf schools on the south east coast of India. Having surfed these waters for the past 14 years Juan and Samai know all about their surf spot. The peers' sand banks provide waves suitable for both beginners as well as advanced surfers. The brothers' knowledge of English, French, Spanish and Tamil along with professional, imported equipment (foam-boards with rubber fins) gives beginners from all around the world a perfect opportunity to catch their first waves and enjoy it in the heat and bustle of South India.

Doing this was always on my bucket list. I managed to get an individual session just at the last minute. It is advisable to book one day in advance. Juan is a funny man(I am sure he remembers it when a 25 year old took permission from his mother for this lesson). Eddie was very professional. In one session I almost managed to stand on the surf board.

Easy to schedule in surfing lessons. Walked through the logic of surfing with my sons, followed by last 30min of actual surfing. Well worth a visit!

Owned and run by two adorable bear-hugable giants Samai and Juan, who will put up with literally anything you throw at them including refusing to stand up on the board (which was just one googly i kept throwing at them...I finally stood.) The team at Kallialay is extremely professional (nothing escapes them even from 50 meters of surf away they'll tell you exactly what you're doing wrong and when), incredibly patient - something us beginners who can't tell whether a wave is coming or going need - and fabulous surfers (just watching them is such a treat).
For beginners i would recommend minimum 5 days to get the feel of riding a wave and get the hang of walking your board back out to the surf. Since i did a 7-day course i got to learn from nearly all the instructors which is great because they each have something to teach - Saphia is an absolute sweetheart and such a great instructor, they are all very big on safety.
Must see : them on their boards...so rare but so prized.
Must do : hug the surfing bears... incomplete experience without it.
It is for: everyone, but especially with a cold... The water will clear out your sinuses ;)
I'm Kallialay committed.

I did a 3 day course here few days back. Details of the same are below.

Location - Surf school is located at Serenity beach, close to Theevu Plage restaurant. You can find boards on the ECR and the beach so can find it easily.

Timings of the sessions - For beginners at least, the timings of the sessions are when there is low tide, we had all our sessions in the afternoon between 12-2. The exact time depends on the low tide timings. You can plan your travels accordingly.

Price - Per session rates are ~ 1200. it is cheaper if you do a 5 day session or a 10 day session. Private sessions cost you 600 more.

Trainers - Juan, Eddie, safia and the others are all professionals and very friendly. They make sure that the sessions are fun and safe.

Things to keep in mind - Hydrate yourself properly before the sessions, carry your swimming costumes / trunks. T-shirts are provided by them, you can also apply sun-screen lotion there itself. There is a changing room where you can keep your luggage and a wash room. No lockers so you might wanna leave your valuables behind, although the place is very safe. The sessions can be a little tiring so doing two sessions in a day may not be advisable.

Overall the 3 days with Kallialay were super fun, the trainers are really good at what they do and they will make sure that you are able to stand on the board and ride the wave in a session or two. It is extremely safe, We had ~3-4 trainers in a batch of 8-10 people and you should definitely give it a try even if you don't know swimming or are scared of water. Again age is no bar, we had a lady in one of our sessions who would be in her 50's trying out surfing.

I would definitely want to come back again.

Best 10 days I have spent in pondicherry. Firstly it was Kallialay surf school which motivated us to come to pondicherry. Me and my friend had beforehand decided to learn surfing , but we weren't sure if we would be standing on our surfboards, riding our own waves at the end of the course, but Juan , safia and Edgar from kallialay surf school surely made it happen. We did a 10 day course and now I surely can catch my own waves and dance with them. The instructors here are uber cool and thorough professional and friendly at their approach. For people who love water sports I would wholeheartedly recommend this place. And it is surely a must do thing in pondicherry.
