“A tranquil and peaceful yet energetic get away”
Reviewed 23 October 2013

Martam Village resort is approximately 30 kms short of Gangtok if you are coming from Bagdogra. It is located in upper Martam in a hilly terrain and you will need the owners / hotels assistance in locating it ( and the owner is very very helpful, the closer we got - the more frequent were his call to assist ). Once you reach the destination, hopefully in daylight, the experience begins. The hotel is built on a hill side with cottages on steps cut into the hill. The cottages are spacious and well maintained. We stayed there immediately after the monsoons but the rooms were clean with no trace of moistness / staleness common in most Hotels after monsoons. The staff is warm and cheerful and My Piam ( I am not sure I got the name right) is exceptionally helpful with suggestions and tying up local transport requirements.
Apart from enjoying the tranquil peace, the Hotel restaurant at the foothills prepares splendid and tasty preparations which have a touch of home cooking ! The food is easy on digestion (also helped by the climb back to your cottage).
For activities - there are two short treks available - one through a forested path leading to paddy fields and another through a village. Each path takes approx 30 - 45 minutes of fairly comfortable beaten paths. The locals are helpful should you need directions.
The Rumtek monastery is about 12 kms away and you will need transport to reach there unless you are in for a long trek and is the only tourist point in close vicinity. For the rest of the tourist places - it is better to shift base to Gangtok to avoid the commute time of over 2 hrs one way.
Stay at MVR to soak in the weather, unwind, relax and explore the countryside on your own.

Our guide took us on a side trip to this lovely place. Unfortunately we were already staying in Gangtok because this spot would have been perfect after our trekking. Beautiful, clean and spacious cottages with a lovely view of the rice fields. Apparently there is some lovely trekking that would make for a great way to visit the villages in the area. The owner seemed very friendly and toured us through the place and mentioned that during the high season (sept through dec) there are bonfires at night and a great community feeling amongst the guests. Sounded like a wonderful place that would be a great stop after a trek for a couple of nights.

I stayed here last year in the month of May. This is situated near a sleepy hamlet - Martam in Sikkim. Farms and village walks can be explored easily from here. Rustic charm at its best.
They serve fresh organic food. Ideal for a 24 hour stay.

Stayed at Martam Village Resort overnight in a chalet. Staff were very friendly and helpful. Enjoyed an early morning walk through the village and surrounds. Quite remote and very pretty. Wonderful vista of terraced gardens.

A wonderful little hideaway tucked in on the side of a hill. Surrounded by gardens and farmland. Mornings are beautiful with the mists showering down the hillsides. Birds galore.

Restaurant, bar are excellent. Good local fare. Tourist buffets are what you would expect. Good, simple food. A little bland, but designed to keep the tourist healthy and full.

Room Tip: Loclal dogs provide a nightly choir. Earplugs can be useful.

We booked this hotel only for 1 day during our return trip from North Sikkim

It is a place worth staying to rejuvnate and sleep in peace after a tiring journey. It is far from the madening crowd of city and staff is very nice and helpful. Hotel is located near Rumtek Monestry.

We were tired, so we requested hotel people to make simple food which they made as per our request since we are strictly vegetarian. Food prepared was very nice.

Staff was very helpful and active.

Remote and few frills, this is a good place to visit in the spring or summer, but would probably be too cold in the winter. It's suitable for adventure travelers who want to get away from it all and have some peaceful time with nature and a village.
