“Not an easy pass”
Review of Nathula Pass

We went to Nathula pass in the month of February'14. Although it was not that cold, the climb was quite difficult, more so because of high altitude. One needs a permit to go to Nathula, so make sure you have it before you visit.

Breathtaking and really awesome beauty with snow clad mountains but a bad journey.
you can enjoy the ride on the yak. snowfall experience is great here and is memorable.
you need to procure a pass from the Ministry of Tourism and from the Ministry of Defense on
submitting the necessary documents and your photographs... The roads, is not in good condition despite being maintained by
BRO ...

AT 14400 FEET this place is awesome, but not for old persons and kids.. the place has a cafe (very warm)
but I did not find the momo impressive. the Indian army men promptly helps to any medical emergency. If you can climb uphill you can see Chinese army on the other side...

Very impressive in summary

Breathtaking beauty with snow clad mountains was a great journey. Really enjoyed the ride on the yaak. First ever snowfall experience of my life here made it even more memorable.

Coming from the plains and from warmer places, suddenly getting to almost 4500m above MSL, this was a terrific experience. Going well above the clouds through winding roads running through the edge of the Himalayan ranges on roads which are just wide enough to let two vehicles cross each other was a unique experience. Getting here requires a pass from the Ministry of Tourism and from the Ministry of Defence which is usually managed by the Tourist operator, on submitting the necessary papers. However make sure before you start that you check the pass mentioning your name. The roads, despite being maintained by BRO is equivalent to going off road with average speeds limited to about 30 kmph. Drivers are usually careful and patient.
Once you reach the border, the surprise starts. It was -3 Deg C when we stepped out of the car and not put on the gear. Wind blowing at high speeds, literally pushing my kid, combined with dust and bright sun was challenging. We had to climb about 20 - 30 steps to get on top and that's when I realised that the oxygen level was extremely low and this was extremely difficult. Children find it extremely difficult due to the thin air.
I would like to caution all readers that before you step out of your vehicle, ensure that you are on with all your winter gear - thick jackets, gloves and don't forget your mask to cover your nose / mouth. No oxygen cylinders are available at this place. The Indian army also runs a canteen where Tea, Momo.....
It's Tibetian culture all the way up there and it was a totally different world.
