“Relaxing spa weekend”
Reviewed 13 April 2012

We won a spa weekend so headed down to Bunclody. The hotel was easy to find and had loads of accessible parking. The rooms were comfortable, however, they did not have any smoking rooms available and that meant going downstairs to the main doors which was an inconvenience. The hotel has a spa and indoor pool, bar and restaurant onsite which was super convenient. There is a beautiful golf course across the road and pubs and restaurants in town within easy walking distance. The staff were helpful and courteous throughout our stay, and we had no problem getting an early check in.

Room Tip: There was a bit of noise from other guests in the hallway which we heard from our room in the mornin...

Where to start with this 'weekend from hell'

Let's start at the beginning.......

Myself, my 8 month pregnant wife and our two year old toddler decide to book a last minute Easter weekend for our anniversary. We also realise its the last chance we will ever have to spend with our little boy on our own.

I look on the web and find a deal break for 2 nights B&B and 1 evening meal. The hotel rates itself as 4* and looked very good. So I book a DOUBLE ROOM

Friday 6th April

we arrive and are shown to a dirty twin room. My two year old picks up coins from under the bed (obviously not cleaned). I open the wardrobe and there is scribble all over the door, black mould on the window sill, stains on the carpet, dated room

I contact reception whom advise that she will change the bed for a double bed.

The room attendant arrives and proceeds to put a double duvet over the single bed. My eight month pregnant wife rings reception and is told she booked a twin( this conversation escalates to a point where the receptionist tells my wife she will not fall in between the bed as this is how all European hotels work, and advises my wife to lie on one side)

An hour later we are finally told that to have the double bed we booked we would have to move to a room facing a concrete wall without a 'view'.

I point out that because of our toddler and heavily pregnant wife, we will spend more time in the room than usual. I'm told that there is no other option

It's now 4pm and none of us have eaten since breakfast. I enquire about our dinner in the restaurant. I am informed that actually our dinner is not in the restaurant it's in the 'bistro' (Bar). I point out that the advert leads one to believe that dinner is in the restaurant and does not mention the bar

We have dinner in the bistro the decor is shabby with broken furniture and shabby fittings and dirty environment and are told that our wine and beer choices are not available, my son has pasta off the kids menu. Stickers and awards all over the hotel identify food awards. My son chokes on a piece of plastic in his microwave pasta, we complain and wait 20 mins with no reply. Eventually we get up to leave and approach the bar manager whom advises that

All pasta and various dishes are bought ready made in and heated in a microwave and it was an issue for the suppliers, he then tries to proceed to charge us for the pasta, but does not after complaint.

When we return to our room the onlyore semblance to 4* stars are the 4 fuzzy stations on the broken tv. We call reception again and are visited by the receptionist whom informs us that in order for the broken remote control ( with no seal on the bare batteries ) to work we had to stand directly in front of the tv and perform a manual adjustment to the buttons on the tv and remote

With the tv not working we go to sleep earlier than we would at home,

We are woken up at 1am by the elderly couple next door.........they turn there tv for a while and then sit in bed talking, our little boy wakes up with the tv. the walls are so paper thin we can hear them chatting until 3am, they never raised a voice but we could hear them talk, sniff, cough, go to the loo etc

The next morning we 'foolishly' go swimming in the freezing cold pool ( the attendant informs us that the pool temperature is being reheated by 1degree a day and will be back to optimum by Monday. We are given 3 hand towels to dry ourselves, the shower area smelled of urine and the facilities are filthy.

We attend breakfast at 10.25 and que for 20 mins. Eventually we enter the dining room to find more empty tables than full, all empty tables are piled with dirty dishes we find a table and clean it ourselves.

There are no pastries, no milk, no fruit, no coffee, the staff are zombiefied and slow to lay our table it takes 30 mins to get a cup for our coffee and eventually get milk for our cereal

We return to our room to go out we are told that due to the plastic in our sons food we will be accommodated in the main restaurant that evening, the food was lovely and restaurant manager very attentive and we enjoyed a lovely meal

We returned to our room and as we are preparing for bed our toddler playing with his tractor catches his pyjamas on a nail hanging out of the wall at ground level

I take a sower and the water fitting falls off the tap

That night we are awoken by a new couple next door merely occupying there room

Next morning we go swimming and due to no attendant being present we wait to get out to request towels to get dry,my pregnant wife toddler and myself wait 25 mins in the cold pool for the staff member to return with 3 hand towels. He informs me he had to go to the laundry as they
had to wash towels themselves,

Our weekend break to spend with our son was shocking, my pregnant wife is more tired than before we left.

I have never complained or posted a complaint, but I feel seriously perturbed by this trading standard issue we were mislead from start to finish. The final indignity was that i had to labour my concerns with reception on checkout and was eventually given no charge for my stay. This was only agreed to because of other guests being present

No way four star, poor poor poor

Got a Good deal online for a two night stay in this hotel with spa treatment included. The spa was great-no faults there-a wonderful massage with excellent service! A lunch was included with one of the treatments and I was told that my partner could join me for lunch at an added cost of €15. However, he was given a regular bar menu to choose and by looking at the price list on the menu-nothing added up to €15! When we arrived in the hotel room, I sat on possibly the squeakiest, most uncomfortable bed and we had to switch rooms. We were told we would have to stay on the same floor (2nd) and whenever we ordered food they knew our package simply by our room number. The hotel room was freezing even after turning up the thermostat. So I think that our 'Good Deal' was maybe not so good as you have to stay in the worst rooms in the hotel. At least I assume this was the case as I never actually saw any of the other rooms, but as its a 4* hotel I would hope that they do have a better standard of room! I wont be going there again for a relaxing stay. Quiet disappointing!!

Room Tip: Be very wary if your room is on the 2nd floor and check the bed is adequate.

Stayed there march 31st, wouldn't recommend it. Checked in at 3pm by 5.30 we had to ring reception as there were still no towels in the room. Eventually they arrived the bare minimum ratio with one small vial of shower gel between 2, were told the delay was because they "washed them themselves". Bar area was run down. Got a sneak preview of the sauna in the restaurant that night (aircon seemed broken). To be fair breakfast was good if you don't mind waiting. went to check out at 11.30 eventually checked out at 12:00 as at the peak check out time there was one person on reception who was also answering the phones. Leisure centre run down.

Got a good deal to stay here for two nights - staff are very good - recommended local walks, and very friendly. Breakfast was good - Bar food -only ok mayonaise with everything, My main issue was that the walls are thin and a couple next door had an argument for an hour and we heard every word!

Other than that its a great base for visiting wexford, kilkenny, staff excellent, good value

Had a lovely 3 night break over St Patrick's Weekend. Was a bit anxious having read some reviews on this site but from the moment we arrived we had a great time. Check-in was fast and efficient. We were given a 2 bed apt which was clean and had everything we needed (and more...).

Booked dinner in the Lady Lucy restaurant Friday night and food was really good. Staff were very friendly and helpful recommended a lovely wine by the glass for our meal. Our 4 yr old was completely tired out after spending the afternoon in the pool and couldn’t make it through dinner. We told the staff we had to get him back to the room and they very helpfully suggested we order what we wanted and they would deliver it over to us (thanks David & team). This was great - we were back in the room early enough for a Friday night so ate desert watching telly so didn’t feel we missed out too much!

4 yr old was collected on Sat morning on the "breakfast train" and had breakfast with other kids while Mam & Dad had a lovely relaxing breakfast in the main restaurant. Kids club then made some lovely decorations for St Patricks Day and were brought off to the pool for a swim where parents could join in if they wanted. (Thanks Rebecca). We found the pool to be clean and warm. The staff were friendly and helpful too.

Just a note, had dinner in the bar area Sat & Sun night and while food was fine it could have been better - pizza topping was burnt and really shouldn’t have been served - left too long under a lamp I think. However, the staff were very helpful and enthusiastic in trying to do their best. We could say this for all the staff we encountered too.

Overall, we had a lovely time, and yes there are some areas that this hotel could improve but it didn’t distract from our break at all and we would happily return for another short break.

Room Tip: Try and get an apt if you can. Great if Mam & Dad want a bit of a lie in while the kids watch te...
