This was our third stay at Royal Son Bou and as with the others we loved every minute of our holiday. Our children are three and five. To begin with it really is a family club with everything set up for children from the buffet in the restaurant that is at kid height with plastic plates to the animal signs of the apartments to help children recognise where their flat is. This also means that there is alot of noise as there are a lot of children - this is great as no-one worries about their kids running around or shouting but means it is very hard to find somewhere calm & quiet in the hotel.

The hotel is in Son Bou about 20 minutes from the airport in a taxi. When you arrive you see two towers belonging to the other hotel in Son Bou which unfortunately is an eye sore for that part of the coast line but as the rest of the coast is a nature sanctuary there is no other sea front buildings.

Check in very easy and if you arrive after the diner buffet is closed the hotel will prepare a hamper of food (hams, cheeses and fruit) and some wine that you find in your apartment. The apartments are very large and some have two bedrooms and two bathrooms - one with a bath, one with a shower. We were in Block E this year and have stayed in Block D previously. There is a small kitchen area and we used it for lunch buying groceries from the supermarket just next to the hotel - you cannot cook a three course meal but it's big enough to do the basics. The rooms have recently been refurbished and they are kept spotless daily. During our stay we had a small problem with one of the toilets which was repaired immediately once we informed the hotel. All the apartments have a large balcony most of which look over the swimming pool and I would recommend requesting a room on the highest floor (3rd) as it is less noisy unless you have very small children as going up and down the stairs can get tiring.

There are two swimming pools - one for the small children which becomes as hot as a sauna during the day so we spent most of our time in the main pool which also has a section of very shallow water. It can get a bit busy as everyone appears to buy enormous inflatable fish, sharks and crocodiles...There are signs up to ask people not to reserve sun beds and in general most people free up their places when they go for lunch or out so there it is normally not a problem to find a place to lie. The hotel provides beach/pool towels so you do not have to bring your own.

The beach is a five minutes walk away on a private path which is great so no need to cross roads however I would recommend going to the part of the beach near to the main car park on the other side of the town (10 minutes walk) as the beach there is larger and free of algae which tends to get washed up on the beach near the hotel. A couple of places to eat & drink on the beach - we went to the Sunset Beach several times which we would recommend for food and a cocktail whilst the sun sets.

The only slightly negative point is the food at the hotel which is average - there is plenty of choice however little variety throughout the stay - it would have been good to have a few more speciality nights. We ate for the most part at the Basilica restaurant which has a sea view and a terrace that opens out.

We used the kids club which is very well equipped and there were plenty of activities everyday the highlight being the Kiko show most evenings which our two children loved - the show is performed in Spanish, English, German and Italian so easy to follow and you'll end up buying the DVD of the show to take home!

The biggest positive point for the hotel is the staff - every last one is friendly and helpful. Even if it had been over a year since our last visit, the waiters recognised us and stopped for a chat. Every member of staff speaks at least three different languages.

For a family hotel I can only recommend the Royal Son Bou and we will be going back next year.

Myself and my friend , and our 2 daughters ( aged 8 & 10) returned for our 2nd holiday , having previously holidayed there in the summer of 2011.
Everything we enjoyed about the holiday in 2011 was as good as we remembered on our return !!
The staff are multilingual , extremely polite ,friendly and amazing with the children.
The rooms , restaurant , bar area , pool area , was oustandingly clean.
Food was gorgeous ,freshly made , buffet style for each meal , varied in presentation and " guest dishes" i.e. thai / sushi / etc..The choice is plentiful & ideal for children who might be fussy eaters.
The entertainment is varied , not always to our preference , however its easy not to sit in the main entertainment area if you want a quiet " cafe con leche" or Son Bou cocktail ( my favourite!!).The resort was definitely busier this year , however , it never felt overcrowded or too busy.
Kids clubs are available , however our children preferred to play in the pool with newly made friends.
The local beach is popular , the water is warm & clear , the beach is clean and under a 5 minute walk from the resort.
Like any holiday , its what you make of it , we went to relax and do very little, and thats what we did.
We did go on 1 days excursion to smaller cove type beaches , by boat and bus which we're glad we did but the beaches became virtually unbearable once the boat passengers descended onto the tiny beaches.

Overall absolutely fantastic for friends \ families with children wanting to chill out.
Would I go again ? Yes I would.

Room Tip: The ground floor was handy with the children , however the maids are cleaning very early and are quite vocal !! ( My only minor gripe!)

Have just returned from a weeks stay at RSB.It is exactly what is says on the tin a family orientated holiday. We travelled with 2 small children (7 & 4) in a superior sea view room in Block A.This was a very good room with plenty of space with everything you need. This place is spotless I even saw people cleaning the toilets at 10.00 pm.Never had any problem with getting a sun bed in fact I have never seen so many in a hotel before.Food is of a decent standard and even fussy eaters will find something as the choice is good. There is plenty of entertainment for both adults & children alike & the staff are very friendly. As as been stated the majority of people there are Germans but they make a nice change from the brits abroad mob in many other places.Only downside with them is that after the childrens entertainment the area thinned out a lot for the adult entertainment & there was not a lot of atmosphere when the acts came on.They dont seem to know how to have a good time even on holiday.

All in all this is an excellant choice 7 we will definately return

Thr Royal Son Bou did not let us down on our second holiday with them, it is just one of the best family resorts you can visit. The personnel and the animation team are just fantastic and with there easy manner take away that hidden parent pressure of having to have the "perfect children" when out and about.
Thank you to the whole team, we will be back.
Only one negative point was that this time we had a smaller apartment (we booked to late!) and so not having the separate room for the children also there was no cupboard space for extras in the kitchenette .... But that's minor!

Room Tip: Take the larger rooms if you can afford the extra!

We travelled to Son Bou on 7th July for a week with 2 young children (2 & 4). The hotel itself is not aligned with any British tour operator so we arranged hotel and travel separately via TravelRepublic. The hotel is popular with Germans and a few Italians as well as Spanish so all the staff speak German, Spanish and passable English. They are brilliant with the kids though. All the staff stopped and interacted with our 2 boys which they loved. The 2 pools are decent sized and in separate locations at the hotel. Everything is self-contained and easy to get to however. Both restaurants serve very good food. This was one of my concerns as the majority of guests (German mainly) are on an all inclusive option so the meals are buffet style. But the quality and choice is high and I have no complaints. There is a kids club which we barely made use of because our two are quite young but in a few years we could leave them there and do our own thing easily. Virtually everything at the kids club is free too, including excursions. We decided to rent a car for a few days to explore the island. Recommend going to Mahon and doing a boat trip. The old town is very pretty too. If you're new to Menorca beaches, the south side is calmer and better for kids whereas the north is choppier but very picturesque. Transfer from the airport is easy - about 20mins and car hire can be arranged close by to the hotel or via the hotel (I think this works out more expensive though). Hotel accommodation also very good. The apartment we had was modern, equipped with aircon and a small hob, microwave and sink and nicely furnished. My only gripe, all the light switches are in easy reach even for a 2yr old so you can imagine the fun they had! There is entertainment every night next to the pool area which is also of a decent standard. All in all I would certainly recommend this hotel and location.
