Apartments San Jaime

We have just returned from the Son Bou Playa which is part of the same complex as San Jaime. The apartment was ideal for us and the gardens are well kept ,but where it was situated left a bit to be desired as it was about a mile to walk to the bars and resturants for the evening and also to get to the beach. The area was delightful, and it was easy to get a bus any where you wanted to go on the island. Sadly the down side was the basic equiptment in the apartments, saucepans with wobbly handle , no kettle etc. The pool had very uncomfortable sunbeds and was very shallow making it dificult to swim in. The supermarkets locally were very overpriced and did not have a lot of choice. On the whole it was an enjoyable place to stay, but it would have been better to be prewarned about the amount of walking it would involve

Our fourth visit to this great complex and I cannot believe some of the negative comments. We stayed in a privately owned apartment but have also stayed in others on the complex in the past. Yes it is a small town but then Menorca is a small island and I suggest most resorts are fairly small. There are at least a dozen restaurants serving decent food plus the excellent San Jaime club which does good food and nightly entertainment (mostly "tribute" acts) and the staff are great.
If you really must get away there is an hourly bus service to the capital which takes around 30 mins and costs 2.45 euro.
In our experience, the supermarket on the complex is probably the cheapest for most things (there are 3 others in the town). Yes, it is expensive if you want British goods but a large (often still warm) baguette is 1 euro, 8 litres of water 1.70 euro, litre of sangria 1.30 euro.
The charge for sunbeds round the pool at least discourages large families from taking over most of them for their kids who hardly use them.
Noise from the club? It's not Ibiza with boom boom boom till 6am. The latest it finished was 11.30 in our experience.
All this and only a 20 minute taxi ride from the airport, plus a beach to die for. What more do you want from a relaxing holiday?

There are a few things to consider before you go to Son Bou, first and most important is the fact that once you arrive ,you will be stuck in a small town with a few shops, restaurants and very expensive supermarkets. The only way to escape is by hiring a car [ very very expensive] by taxi ,5 euros per kilometre, or by bus which only goes to Mahon the capital and transfer from there. We have only just returned and the exchange rate in the resort is basically one for one,so just take these prices as sterling
sun bed by the pool £3
sun bed on the beach £17 per day
hire an electric kettle £11 per week
sliced loaf in supermarket £4
small bag of walkers crisps by the pool £1.50
small bottle of water £1.50
There are three cafes on the beach that are dearer still
Do not be put off Son bou ,the beach is fantastic and the town itself is spotlessly clean
but if you are going self catering ,try and take whatever you can with you ,there are a lot of things that they dont mention in the brochure ,so be prepared for a few surprises ,like the fact that even the water slide by the pool will cost £1 a go ,Enjoy

Cute apartment complex in a nice area very close to San Bou beach (longest sand beach on the island). Unfortunately the nearby Club San Jaime does (very loud) live performances every night (may-september) making it impossible to sit outside and enjoy the evening. The nearby restaurants do not offer anything special, they are fine for a quick bite. The apartment was very clean and well equipped (electric kitchen stove/oven, microwave, refrigerator/freezer, toaster, electric iron, TV) and the terrace was great in the morning for breakfast. Unfortunately, due to the noise from the nearby Club San Jaime in the evening we cannot recommend this apartment complex in high season (at least those apartments near the club which is located at Passeig del Prat and Carrer Sant Jaume Medit - on google earth you will see a blue giant water slide nearby).

5 day break in late October. The staff very friendly and 2 bed apts were well equipped with microwave and gas oven. Bring tea, soap, matches etc as these are very expensive.
Chilly at night....heater hire for 20 euros a week.
Had sunny beach to myself apart from a few nudists. Pavarotti was on at the nitespot.
His voice was off, no doubt due to spending 2 years in a coffin!
Main bedroom had low pulsed hum at night. Changed to the other room, but could be a prob for families.
Upper apts had sunny verandah for sunbathing...ask for one!

Stayed for the 3rd time at San Jaime, Son Bou. We travelled later this year at begining of October. The weather was mid 20s, some rain but sunny most days. The resort was very quiet, maybe a touch too quiet for us although all restaurants and shops were open.
The beach fantastic and not at all busy.
**We have always booked an apartment online and sorted out own flights - big savings rather than using tour operator **.
San Jaime classed as 2* but I would recommend this resort to anyone .....
From the beach turn right and take a wonderful walk to St Thomas the next resort along.
About an hours slow pace you will arrive there. If you have a drink in the hotels you can use their pools for the day! Well we did!

Only downside this year - prices have shot up over whole island - although the euro to pound is low the actual prices of everything in Menorca very expensive.
You will pay £20.00 per head for 2 course meal with a drink each. Breakfast everywhere costing £8-£9.00 each for full english with a drink.
Best restaurant still Las Dunas, at bottom of hill on route to beach. Alot of other restaurants offering a good meal deal - choose from various starters and mains for 12 euros each. Good value.
Be prepared to spend more than you would at home for foods.
Loaf bread approx £2.00 / can coke £1.50 / wine and beer £3.00 per pint and glass / toilet rolls - unbelievable price of £2.50 for 4!!
Taxi ride from airport to San Jamie increased by double in a year - expect to pay 30 euros each way.
On the whole fantasic break again - we will return !
