“Good food, beer, accommodation and service made a great break”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 2 September 2013

Hadn't visited Dorset for many years and it is a beautiful county. I picked the Poachers Inn from one of the late booking sites and was not disappointed. Met with a very warm welcome and was shown to our room. Room was a good size and a well appointed bathroom. Chose to eat in the restaurant for three of the four nights we stayed and all the dishes were well cooked and presented. The fish dishes were particularly good.

The bar has a good atmosphere with many 'locals' as well as hotel guests.

Would be happy to recommend this hotel to anyone with the real highlight being the efforts made by the staff to do everything they can to make the stay a good one.

Initially only booked for 1 night and then extended to 3, we would have stayed longer if they had the room. Wonderful place, great, friendly staff who went out of their way to make us feel welcome. Fantastic value for money and the food was lovely, with enough choice and all freshley made local produce.
Great location for exploring that part of Dorset.
Our only complaint is that there isn't any availability for a return trip in October, we wanted to visit with friends to show them how lovely it is.

Room Tip: We chose a basic room, on the small side but for what we paid it was still great value for money and...

We stayed here for the night on 29th August: room 6, one of the two suites, and easily the best one, as the doors opened straight out on to our own terrace in front of the pool. A very nice warm welcome, and all of the staff were very friendly. I was very brave and went for a swim - nice once you got used to it! Fabulous bathroom, with a great walk-in shower, and a jacuzzi bath, which we shared with a bottle of champagne....very decadent. The decor in the bedroom was lovely - lots of oak panelling and sumptuous curtains. The bed was amazingly comfortable - one of our best hotel night's sleep ever. We ate in the restaurant and had some stunning food, but I can't remember what! Oh, yes, fresh asparagus with poached eggs and a hollandaise sauce, but I can't remember what came next....Blame the champagne...... Breakfast was absolutely fine, and we would recommend the Poachers to anyone. Such good value as well!

Room Tip: Go for the suite, room 6 - it was very little more than the normal rooms, and ten times nicer.

Lovely Pub with accommodation, family friendly and dog friendly which is great.
Centrally located within the county so easy to drive around and explore the local surroundings.
Outdoor pool was lovely, not sure it was heated, pretty chilling for a baking hot day in August.
Food is good in the evening in the pub and restaurant, breakfast not so good, not a great selection, not great at catering for different dietary requirements although if we'd said when booking they might have got provisions in.
Bedrooms are clean and spacious although not very sound proof - could hear the room next door flushing the toilet and having a shower.

Decided at the last moment to book a night away over the bank holiday. After a bit of research discovered the Poachers Inn. Booked one of their suites (room 6) and it more than met their description and our expectations. The staff are all excellent and the food was super.

The hotel has 21 rooms, a heated pool, lounge and a more than friendly bar. They had live music which was a pleasant surprise for a Sunday afternoon. There are several patio areas which all rooms have easy access to.

There were people of all age groups as well as families and the hotel is dog friendly which we didn't find a problem. Some reviewers had mentioned this as a problem!

Will be recommending The Poachers to friends and will no doubt stay again.

Room Tip: Room 6 has its own patio and overlooks the pool

Stayed here one night in the Executive suite, lovely room and very spacious at the back of the hotel, so it was very tranquil, peaceful and no noise.

The staff are very friendly, food is very good and breakfast was plentiful. Both myself and my husband stayed here due to knowing the area having lived just down the road a few years ago, which was our local. It was lovely to re-visit as a guest and absorb the beautiful countryside it is set in. There is no phone signal in the valley and wifi is only in the bar area but this didn't bother us as we wanted to spend total time in the peace without any disturbances.

There is a swimming pool and nice patio areas at the rear of the hotel so do remember to take your costume it is heated.

We will definitely be returning again.

Room Tip: You will not be disappointed.

Only stayed here one night so can't really give it 5*. Room no.4 was spacious, clean & quiet. Nice breakfast, friendly staff and beautiful property with a swimming pool and nice patio areas with cute stream out the back. Would def stay again.
