“Very Friendly nice place, finest Italian Hospitality”
Reviewed 18 May 2014

I enjoyed my stay small hotel quite old but well maintained kept by nice italian family keeping a fine ristorante inside, the hosting is warm and they treat you with respect and cater to your smallest questions.
To Summarize, the place is enjoyable with excellent food, and providing good value for your money, recommended.

Room Tip: Isar Side is better view

Stayed here for a long weekend after deciding to have a bit of a break from Munich City Centre.

Some background about the area - Gruenwald is one of the most expensive areas in Germany. It is still a suburb of Munich - meaning it's not quite as far into the countryside as you may think from the photos.

Getting there - by far the easiest way is by taking the S8 S-bahn line straight from the airport to Rosenheimer-Platz and then take the 25 (pink) Tram line to Gruenwald. Gruenwald is at the end of the line and the tram loops round in a square and stops for about ten minutes. The hotel is about 5 mins walk away (it's bang opposite the church if you get lost). Trams run every 20 mins and you can be back in the city within 30 mins. It's an option if you don't want to stay in the city.

An alternative is to take the S7 line south to Wolfratshausen but be aware, you have to walk down to a bridge over the River Isar and then up to the hotel on the otherside. It's quite demanding, and with a suitcase it would be nigh on impossible. There is a taxi firm next to the station but it doesn't appear to be open all time. I wouldn't attempt the walk in the dark or bad weather either. In short, take the tram!

The hotel has existed since the turn of the 20th Century. It is right next door to Gruenwald Castle, which contains a museum on archaeology, but this was closed at the time of my visit, re-opening in mid-April. The views over the River Isar are spectacular; unfortunately it wasn't warm enough to sit outside and take them in! You can walk down to the Isar and walk along the riverbank. The various trails for walkers and bikes are very good. There's also a small refeshement kiosk. There is a busy road running over the bridge and past the hotel - so it's not as quiet as you may think from photos.

To the hotel itself - bear in that I feel that this is a restaurant - and a good one at that - with guest rooms. Not a hotel with a restaurant. There are no facilities such as lounges, etc. But that was fine by me. The room and bathroom was clean and well-decorated. The views from the top floor must be impressive! As has been noted, there are no lifts and the stairs can be steep in places - could be a problem if you have difficulties in manipulating a large suitcase.

The restaurant is excellent - please see my other review. Breakfast was also fine. Staff were friendly and helpful. It's clear that not many English-speaking people stay here - there are no notes in the room in English, no English menu, etc. But again this didn't present a major problem.

A short walk away are local shops, a supermarket, several restaurants, and a bank with an ATM.

I enjoyed my stay here after the bustle of Munich. I found walking by the Isar very peaceful and relaxing. I'll probably head back at some stage!

For someone preferring smaller sized personal style hotels over the big chains, this hotel absolutely offers value for money. Located in Grünwald it is close to southern part of Munich and Pullach. It is located directly at the Isar shore, beautiful green location. Breakfast was excellent (as in many German family run hotels). Indeed a couple of stairs (I was staying on the 3rd floor) but not a huge problem and at least no elevator noise. Room is nice and had a separate hallway dividing the singe room's bed area from the bathroom. The bathroom and bed are of good quality. Friendly staff.

We were visiting friends in Gruenwald , a suburb of Munich. The hotel is a quirky building that has been converted to use as a hotel. No elevator or bellboy so you carry your bags upstairs. We paid about $100 for a small basic room with a breakfast buffet that included fresh bread and cured ham and cheeses. It is a serviceable place except for the bathroom which is reminiscent of a train compartment. You can stand in one place and touch the sink, toilet and shower without extending your arm. The shower was smaller than a plane bathroom. This may be the budget room since other people say they had large bathrooms. The room itself was also very small , NYC small. Decor was very basic.

Was here for 8 days. If you like rooms with BIG roomy bathrooms, this is the place for you! Good restaurant, too.
Pluses: LARGE bathrooms, very nice. Very pretty location. Friendly staff albeit lacking in English.
Minuses: No elevator. Rooms start on "2nd Floor" - which is THIRD floor for Americans. So lots of stair hiking. No in-house laundry. Breakfast is skimpy by American standards.
Gruenwald seems to be a retirement community.. not much to do.
