“Will definitely be going back ....”
Reviewed 11 November 2011

I spent a week at Bambu from 31 Oct 2011 and was very glad I had picked this one from my impulsive Google search! My first solo holiday, having only recently started to 'come out', so I was a little apprehensive as to what to expect. Catherine was great during the booking process, with follow up advice about the holiday and was also available during the week I was there with suggestions and tips. My accommodation was excellent with everything I needed (except a hair dryer), clean and very comfortable. On the first night, we had an impromptu tour of each other's rooms and I would have been happy to stay in any of them. I was lucky with the weather with it being end of season, having 4 days of hot sun, chilling out beside the pool making friends and sharing experiences. The pool was great but, as you would expect in November, very cold! The walk into the nearby village is about 20 mins down an uneven road/track, mainly downhill going, so obviously mostly uphill coming back - not recommended if you are getting shopping or having a few beers! On the two days that it was wet (thunderstorms), we had a trip into Malaga and to the caves at Nerja, with Catherine as our taxi.
If you are looking for a holiday where you just want to chill out and make new friends, this is certainly the one. I will definitely be going back.

A recent trip to Bambu proved that there is certainly a call for places like this. Catherine and Susanne have hit on a great idea with their 'solo' weeks for lesbians travelling on their own.
A place to chill out, relax and meet other women. Plenty of sunbeds (pity no hammocks), very clean pool and drinks in the bar (but no snacks, as suggested on the fridge).
However, the cost, and the wording on Bambu's advertising of a 'Boutique hotel' is a misrepresentation and gives the impression of a'plush' or luxury hotel. It is not!
The accommodation is average, the hotel is in the middle of nowhere (hire a car if you wish to go anywhere) and, for a self-catering establishment, the facilities are minimal.
Of seven apartments, there is only one with an oven, and this we were told was unreliable.
There is a microwave and hotplate in each apartment and only basic cooking equipment.
Even with the two barbeques in the garden, you could not, for instance - as one guest found out - cook a pizza. This did mean that all the women during my stay pooled together what they had and we all ate communally; bringing the barbeques into full use as the best alternative. It probably made for a better week in the long run, but even then, you need transport to fetch your own charcoal (carbon in Spanish). Then, not everyone wants to share this way and it does depend on the group of women.
Apart from the cooking facilities, the apartments were pretty clean and comfortable - but don't expect luxury. The room I stayed in was not as clean as it could have been (fluff under bed and ornaments sticky on shelves not dusted), the kitchen cupboards stank of damp, the bed
had a lump in the middle and I could feel the springs - but the shower was fantastic.
Furthermore, the description of therapies and activities available (reiki, aromatherapy, massage and yoga) amounted to nothing more than a list of telephone numbers for outside services. There is no 'therapy' room and no 'therapist' on site.
I spoke to several women who were somewhat disappointed with the standard of the place, given that it only opened last summer.
However, I also spoke to women who were wholly satisfied and had booked to visit again.
If the basic provisions is intended to make women mix more, then fine, but Catherine and Susanne should be more honest with their advertising and use this as a selling point. They would still get bookings (there are so few places for lesbians) but then they would have satisfied customers instead of disappointed ones. Provided women know just what to expect, it is still a good place to visit, relax and meet others.

Room Tip: Room 1 has the only oven. Room 7 is upstairs with balcony, most rooms have a sofa but room 5 doesn...

I do think Sheila is being a bit harsh here and rather picky.
Bambú isn't a 5* plush luxury hotel - accordingly our prices are much lower than you would pay at a 4* or 5* Sheraton. Bambú is a rustic Andalucian converted farmhouse. The term 'boutique' is habitually used in the holiday accommodation sector to describe something small, unique, good quality and with a highly personal service. I think Bambú is all those things. All the rooms have a kitchenette with a two ring hob (two have 5 rings!), a microwave and a fridge. One room, with a much bigger kitchen, has an oven and dishwasher as well. A washing machine, large freezer and two barbecues are shared by all. A great deal of communal cooking and socialising always goes on at Bambú - as a consequence it is often the case that the oven is available to all.
You may have to telephone the therapists, masseurs and other practitioners to arrange an appointment but they all come to Bambú to deliver their treatments. They all also speak English as well as other languages. We couldn't justify having a permanent facility - we accommodate a maximum of 14 guests and not everyone wants a treatment - indeed some weeks go by when no-one wants one. Some guests have their treatment inside their room, others outside. Our guests have highly rated their services - "the best yoga teacher I've ever had" "the most amazing massage" etc.
I'm sorry Sheila thought the cleanliness of her room wasn't up to scratch - we have new cleaners taking over in 2012 and we shall make sure that comments such as these are addressed.
I guess these things are always subjective - Bambú will never please absolutely everyone - but if you read the other comments you will see that most of our guests have an absolutely fabulous holiday. We can all find fault if we are looking for it - did anyone see the recent TV documentary about the TripAdvisors?

I had my first solo holiday at bambu in July 2011 it was simply fantastic ... a team of 6 and we had the best time ever.. it was heart wrenching to say goodbye to everyone..so when I returned to England I got straight back to catherine to get booked to go back on the next solo holiday in August.. couldnt wait until 2012!! well we arrived nearly all at the same time at the airport all excited about our stay. When we arrived at bambu it was like walking into a beautiful retreat.. As my background is walking, yoga and meditation I was walking into paradise. Beautiful accommodation, gorgeous pool, immaculate surroundings.... perfect. That evening all us solo girls got together, chatted, shared our stories and then for the entire time it was nothing but fun. Benamocarra was only a 20 minute walk, lovely clean air, lovely trees and flowers, mango plantations, almond groves and pomegranates!! We all had a trip to the market on the Tuesday and filled our bags of fruit and veg, so fresh and tasty and costs next to nothing. No need to have a car as the company of everyone else is enough on solo weeks. We did venture out though and had some great trips. The best was the walk up the river with our shoes on.. so much fun. Well recommended. I cant fault anything. Every morning I was up very early for my swim. At 6.30am the pool was 27 degrees! then every morning I did my own yoga session (with freddie the cat of course) whilst the sun was rising beyond the mountains... breath taking..the views had to be seen to be believed. I never wanted the week to end which is why I did two solo trips. Ive made lifelong friends and treasure the memories forever. If you are single I would recommend bambu 100%. Just perfect. If you do enjoy walking, peace, meditation, fun, laughs, good company, wonderful hosts, mountain views, perfect evenings, barbeques and simply the best time in the sun, bambu is the place to be... Thank you again Catherine and Susanne and cant wait to see the gang next year!!

We had such a wonderful week at Bambu. We arrived just a little bit frazzled after negotiating the drive from Malaga airport - great roads, and great instructions, but a different side of the road than we are used to, so we were a little stressed. We arrived at Bambu and instantly felt relaxed and at home. It is in such a lovely peaceful spot, surrounded by avocado orchards, and huge hills. We had a pleasant well-equiped room, simple but comfortable, and were given lots of information about local haunts, including how to find our way to the village nearby to buy food for dinner after siesta. We met some lovely women, and enjoyed meals around the 'big table', drinking fabulous (and cheap!) local wine as the night slowly fell. The pool was a delight, and we spent a lot of our week on a lounger, reading great books (good selection to enjoy) and snacking on fantastic cheese, olives, bread, fruit and ham between swims. We really enjoyed a couple of trips into nearby Torres del Mar, which is big enough to have some great restaurants (fantastic reasonably priced seafood at La Cueva) but small enough to not attract hoards of tourists - and it has a great beach. We would highly recommend Bambu and very much hope to return.

I had a great time at Bambu. Desperate for sun and not wanting to be on my own in the evenings the solo week was perfectly timed for my holiday. The resort was full this time with Brits, but as I stayed an extra couple of nights, we got a mix of Spanish and French join us for the last few nights, which gave an extra dimension that I liked. The apartments and resort are as described on the website. It is a small resort with 7 apartments but perfectly formed. I liked the remoteness - it is 1.5km from the village of Benamocarra up a track. I recommend hiring a car so that you can see the area - It's 1.5hrs from Granada - well worth the drive for the Alhambra, and thankfully well away from the British dominated and down market resorts at the coast.
Strongly suggest booking the mid priced apartments or the 'honeymoon' suite as we called it as the base line apartments are small, although you won't be in them much - the outside space is very nice and those warm summer evenings mean you are hardly inside at all.
Catherine and Susanne do everything possible to make your stay a good one and I couldn't fault them.
I would recommend Bambu for someone who doesn't want the loud blasting Spain that you experience at the coast.
