Have returned from a fabulous fortnight in The Elizabeth. This is a small, family run hotel (abt 22 rooms). We had read reviews abt other Gouvia hotels and were impressed by comments of friendliness at the Spiti Prifti, however, my husband had been to The Elizabeth 29 years ago, when it first opened, and when he checked and found that Dimitri was still the owner, we had no hesitation in trying it out. We didn't go thru an operator, preferring to book flights and hotel ourselves, incl car hire for 3 days, we considered we got a good deal by doing it this way. Dimitri is THE MAN and his son, Akis, are the most friendly and funny people we know. Dimitri and his family (wife Matoula, son Akis & daughter Elizabeth) work tirelessly to ensure that your holiday runs smoothly and that you get everything you require. Nothing is too much trouble. Like most greek, small hotels, the rooms are basic, but exceptionally clean. Sheets were changed every 2/3 days and towels were changed every day. The general areas of the hotel, including the pool, the poolside bar and the gardens are exceptional. Dimitri will even invite you to catch the bunch of grapes that he cuts down from his vines over the outside dining area! To eat at the hotel is very reasonable, with a 3 course meal costing euros 10. Matoula is the cook and even manages to turn out a Sunday roast of roast beef and yorkshire puddings - Yum! God, shes a good cook. The hotel is ideally situated on the main road thru Gouvia, with the bars and restaurants within 5 mins walk. Bus stops to most areas of the island are on your doorstep. The hotel is close enough for everything you need and a bus trip into Corfu Town takes only 15 mins and costs abt euros 1.30 each way. To Paleokastrista (the beauty spot of the island), took only 20mins and cost us euros 1.50 each way. The hotel is close enough to all facilities, but far enough away to avoid the noise of the bars. Gouvia itself is a resort for everyone. We are in our 40's & 50's and we felt quite comfortable as there were all age groups. Gouvia has plenty of tavernas, bars and a few clubs. Considering it was coming to the end of the season, everyone we met in Gouvia were friendly. It was perfect. Having fabulous weather helped towards having the most wonderful holiday, but we have to say that it was the friendliness and helpfulness that was afforded to us that made it for us. Dimitri and his family made us feel that we were family and that they enjoyed our company too - we never felt like we were paying guests.
