We stayed 3 nights in Balneo Hotel with my Mom over the long weekend of the national holiday of 20th of August. The hotel is about 10 minutes drive from Mezőkövesd centre, we took the public bus, which is very cheap and runs quite often to the holiday village of Zsori, where the hotel is situated. The hotel was quite busy all the time but we had a fantastic quiet room on the second floor facing the entrance driveway of the hotel. The room was spotless, brand new furnitures, extra comfy bed, amazing shower and even a balcony for every room that you can enjoy. The area of the hotel was also quiet, if you are not keen on using the aircon at night, you could leave the balcony door open.
The guests were quite mixed at the time we stayed, mainly elderly couples and families with kids/youngsters, some young couples. Most of the guests were Hungarian.
I have to highlight the cleanliness of the rooms and the excellent quality of the food offered for dinner. The cleaning lady asked us if we wanted any cleaning or anything for the room the first day as she found us in the room during cleaning time.
The restaurant is situated by the pool with an adequate number of tables to sit outside. We sit mainly outside although the last night we had to spend inside and it was quite hot and humid in the corner where we found a table. I don't think any aircon was working as the doors were open.
Breakfast was nothing special, continental choice, cereals, jams, 2 choice of scrambled eggs, variety of breads, sausages, salads, 3 choices of juices but a large choice of hot drinks from vending machines. Dinner was on the other hand excellent quality with an adequiate choice of dishes to choose from. Nice salads but I was missing the range of sides as most of the nights there were only 2-3 choices, like potato croquettes or rice, but at least not the ordinary chips.
The reastaurant experience could have been 5 star if only the lack of staff wouldn't let it down. Most of the evenings we were struggling to order drinks as the waiters were so overloaded and disorganised. They were very-very polite and smiley but you could see they are struggling to get everything done and there was no specific drink waiter who could go around and take the orders. During our last dinner we managed to order and get our drinks 10 minutes later when we were having our last bits of our desserts. I think in a 4 star hotel there should be more emphasis on restaurant service and staff should be more organised and should be more people at peek periods especially considering that there are only a few restaurant in the area where you can dine out. Restaurant drink prices were I think acceptable considering 4*, you can choose really expensive but also average priced drinks as well.
Reception staff was again nothing special, the gentleman who finished our checking-in didn't even bother to tell us about the free entry tickets to the Matyo museum. On our last night when the TV broke (no signal) and we went down for dinner I wanted to report the problem to reception, but the lady there just told quite rudely that they know about it, there's a central problem and the specialists are on it. Unfortunately they didn't manage to repare it until the next day when we checked out. Anyway TV was not the utmost service we wanted but it would have been nice to watch it as we finished with dinner too late to sit out on the balcony.
Spa facilities were okay, but considering the almost full house it seemed too tiny for all those people. We were lucky if we could find an empty sunbed at 8:30 in the morning when we came down to have breakfast as most of the people woke up probably at 6 to rush down and put their towels on the sunbeds which stayed then empty for the rest of the day, as people spent the whole day in the pool. But again it's only the selfishness of people. The ice cabin and one of the other cabins were not working but I could try out the sauna and the steam cabin and my Mom enjoyed very much the salt cabin. It's a shame that it's just way too small when there is a full house. But there's the thermal and pleasure beach just 200 meters away with acceptable entrance fee so you can relax outside the hotel as we did 3 out of 4 days. We didn't try any massage but checking out the prices at the thermal beach we found the beach a bit cheaper even after paying the entrance fee, the sauna world fee and for the massage not to mention that you can use all the facilities for almost the same price as a massage costs in the hotel.
Overall it's a great hotel, nice restaurant staff, excellent cleanliness and dinner, and great spa facilities but not at busy times.
