We went for a free ferry trip from Penang to Butterworth, just for the heck of it. Not the most comfortable.

We returned (for the return the payment is RM 1.20 = 40 US cents) immediately without setting foot on land.

Be warned: It is a long walk to the boat on the wharf at Penang.

Best avoided unless you have time to kill.

While it's a good idea to use when traveling between Islands. You need to remember to add extra time just incase of delays. Lucky I had read some of the precious reviews before using this service so I was aware but completely forgot to pack my winter clothing as it is FREEZING. Make sure to take a jumper.

I have been heaps of times on this ferry.Actually my first visit was in 1993 , then later 2002 and then again in 2011......The ferry vehicle has not changed at all.The process and procedures are from older dates. Please note the climbing up stairs and queues as the fares are too low.Costly vehicles use the lower rung.
A Ferry in this service is a big ship as seen in the images attached.Penang depended on the ferry in the early days and hence the big questions arise about the Bridge.
Penang was known as a great place but limited by the ferry.A costly way out is by the Aeroplane that is located far south.

Back to the Ferry. There are are many islands so you must check onto which island you are going to.The queues are long so you must ask ` Going to Georgetown` ( mainland) or Penang when you are coming in.
The ferry trip is nice but can be scary as the sides are open.
The seats are unique as the backs can be reversed.Seeing is believing!
Though the queues are long I have never seen a fully loaded ferry.
Mainland side is linked to a railway/bus terminal.
