We visited Penang Hill last week & after having a walk around my husband an myself made our way to David Brown's, it was 1pm & after a very hearty Hotel breakfast we were looking forward to a nice coffee or tea in this lovely setting.
We arrived & found we were the only customers there. As we entered a waitress looked towards us & my husband asked if we could have coffee, no she replied we are serving lunch! We couldn't manage lunch so we turned to leave, unfortunatley it started to rain very heavily & we found ourselves needing to take shelter, after 30 mins a nice man asked us to shelter inside. It was very windy & as there we no windows we became cold & would have loved a hot drink.
There were lots of staff around, 2 customers entered for lunch whilst we were there & there was a hot jug of coffee ready to go & we had money in our pockets...but no, not for us! We sat there for a very uncomfortable 1 hour & 15mins, but we were not able to spend any money, how very strange?!?
There was a break in the weather & we managed to leave, making our way to the food court near the funicular station, the locals there were very keen to serve us with 2 lovely hot cups of local tea!
We wouldn't recommend this establishment, which is very overated & from reading other reviews, we realised we had a lucky escape!!

Thank NicBLeigh

My party of five went to this restaurant for a typically English meal. Only one table was occupied by a party of four and we were the the second group to arrive. There were seven other empty tables at this restaurant.
The waitress and waiter did not seem to notice our party although we could see the kitchen staff had noticed our arrival. I waited for five minutes and then rang the bell at the table for service. No such luck. A hard of hearing problem? Or was it just plain indifference?
We placed our order for two steaks, a roasted chicken, a pie and roasted vegetables. One of the steaks was meant to be medium to rare but arrived well done! The chicken and the pie dishes were a let down.
We will certainly give this place a wide berth on our next visit up the hill.

Considering we tried pork bowel this is a big statement! Seriously the whole restaurant experience was lacking. No atmosphere to speak of although the frog pond was lovely. So much more could be done to make this venue a really excellent destination restaurant. It was a rainy day and their were few customers. Still the service was very slow and not very friendly. We waited quite a long time for our meal to arrive. My steak was very dry and not the sirloin as per the menu. Price was quite high comparing to other eateries visited.

It's a shame the tea rooms were not open as the view would have been better.

We had coffee at the terrace with a view of Georgetown. Coffee was overpriced, it comes close to a tourist trap. I would not recommend it.

We made dinner reservations for 6 pax at least 2 weeks before. This restaurant was highly recommended by a friend from Penang.
We had a rented car, drove from our hotel at Batu Ferringhi to the foot of Penang Hill. We lost our way, got caught in heavy traffic, arrived at the foot of Penang Hill, waited to take the cable car to the hilltop. We underestimated the travel time.
Only 3 tables were occupied, including ours. We were told by the service staff that the main chef was on compassionate leave so they could only offer a limited range of food comprising soup, spaghetti and dessert.
Some of us ordered the chicken spaghetti and were not expecting the minced chicken. Very simple presentation and it didn't look appetizing at first. The seafood spaghetti tasted better. Both the onion soup and mushroom soup was good. They served us some bread (small and thinly sliced from baguette) which we finished in 2 bites. The service staff said it was not possible to give us more.
We had been looking forward to steaks for dinner but ended up with spaghetti.
It was a nice gesture when they waived the 2 lava cakes off the bill. The lava cake tasted SUPER and was the highlight of our otherwise simple meal.
We lamented that if the next table was served salmon and steak (they were already
there when we arrived), why were we only offered spaghetti. I am missing the puzzle ...
About the landscape: the restaurant has a beautiful garden and lily pond in front but some parts were cordoned off with the cordon tape. Frogs were hopping out from the pond heading to the bushes when the sun had set. We were so enthralled to see the frogs.
