“A great place to stay”
Reviewed 6 April 2013

We were welcomed by Roli with tea and cakes, Eva and Roli were very friendly with lots of helpful tips for Punakaiki and ideas for our next stop in Nelson. The Rocks was in a stunning position with great views, a lovely home, which we enjoyed sharing with the family. The breakfast was delicious, home-made bread, preserves, with eggs cooked to your liking, great tasting coffee and muffins.

Room Tip: Try and get an upstairs room for a great view of the ocean.

We arrived early for our reservation and Roli welcomed us on the deck. He let us drop off a couple of bags and we went exploring. Roli mentioned that he had to "run to the store" which puzzeled us a bit - what's the big deal about going to the store? After a look at the map we figured out his sense of urgency - the stores are in Greymouth, 45 kilometers away on a curvy highway. He had to do the return trip in time to welcome his guests! Well done, Roli!

What a wonderful place Roli and Eva have created. The feeling is that you are in a treehouse, overlooking the bush with the Tasman Sea forming the horizon. Our room framed that view perfectly, making it difficult to get out of bed in the mornings. It is a comfortably large room with great bed and the decoration makes you feel right at home. The bathroom is modern and spacious.

There is an enclosed room on the deck that provides you a perch regardless of the weather. It turned out to be a great place to sip some wine and talk with Roli. He has a nice library with reading materials in both fiction and non-fiction categories. He also has an extensive libray of music CDs for your listening pleasure.

Breakfast in the dining room offers something for everyone. Jennifer opted for eggs from Eva and Roli's Rhode Island Reds while I chose meats and cheeses and fresh fruit.

We had a wonderful conversation with Roli and the other couple staying at The Rocks. They were from the Netherlands and provided us with a phrase in Dutch: "Rust Roest". The sense of the phrase is that, if you rest, you will rust. The Rocks offers a convenient access path to the Truman Trek - an easy walk down to the beach and a little waterfall from the cliff top. If you want to avoid rusting take that brief excursion.

Finding The Rocks Homestay may not be the easiest thing you do in New Zealand. The turnoff to The Rocks is on the left about 2-3 KM beyond Punakaiki. The road is a bit narrow but there are pullouts in the event you meet an exiting vehicle. When you reach the point where the road splits into 3 other roads take the rightmost. Continue to the sign for the Rocks, on your left. There is room for two cars in the primary driveway. If those are occupied proceed another 15 feet and pull into the parking area on your left. Reception is up the stairs to the right of the garage door. This sound more difficult than it is in reality.

This is a lovely place to stay set amongst the "bush". The hosts were very friendly and took the time to chat in the central sitting area. The house is very interesting with very nice bedroom and breakfast.

Eva and Roli have a very lovely home to share, starting from the stunning view to the tasteful architecture and decoration of the house. We enjoyed a tasty breakfast with great variety from muesli to cold cuts to home baked cake and bread-yum! It's close to the Pancake Rocks, a beautiful beach and interesting bush walks. Roli gave us very good advice about things to do and see.

We loved the homestay experience here. Roland and Eva were charming hosts. We were welcomed with tea and delicious home made cake, wonderful after a long drive!
The Rocks is a unique house nestled in the wooded shoreline. You can hear the sea and we had a wonderful sunset from our balcony. Thank you for your attention to detail and good luck with the new baby!

Room Tip: We had a room with a conservatory, great to watch the sun set from the balcony.

There are at least 2 things differentiating The Rocks B&B from other similar places in New Zealand: 1. hospitality of the owners and hosts (Eva and Rolland), 2. the house itself. Upon a warm welcome, Rolland and Eva turned out to be very easy going, relaxed, talkative, yet attentive hosts, willing to do their best to make you feel at home. They simply are good people and it kind of radiates around. Rolland can also be a very good source of information about possible activities (organized and self-guided) around Punakaiki.
A large living room is a heart of the house, where you can either sit with the book, listen to the music, talk to the other guests, or simply observe the ocean and sunsets from the terrace. It has its style, with a lot of light, wooden ceiling and comfy armchairs. Rooms are spacious and they all have little conservatories, where you can sit and relax in privacy.
I am convinced it would be hard to find a better place anywhere close. So don't hesitate and visit the The Rocks.
