“The George Hotel Chollerford Hexham - Shearings hotel”
Reviewed 4 December 2012

Again a delightful and restful break. Staff were very friendly and helpful. The George is set in beautiful scenery beside the bridge over the north Tyne. In the morning the bridge is reflected in the water. The large dining room overlooks this. Although the dining room staff were busy they found time to answer any questions and engage in conversations with guests. Nothing was too much trouble and always met with a friendly smile. The reception staff were welcoming and helpful supplying information or if they didn't know finding out. The swimming pool was great and well used while we were there. A very relaxing break. We have stayed before and plan to return in 2013. Bedrooms provided a relaxing area and were kept spotlessly clean. The hotel has several small cosy areas were you can sit and relax and enjoy the scenery.

Room Tip: Ask for a room overlooking the river

Having stayed at this hotel in the past, today it is cold, uninspiring extremely low quality and thank god we cancelled our evening meal reservation and ventured to a great little bistro in Hexham!
On arrival at the hotel, the room and hotel area's were extremely cold, sat in bar area next to small gas fire wearing our coats to keep warm! ordered a light lunch snack - crisps were stale. Older people sat looking like they were waiting to pass on! Better signage would improve things- above bath "caution hot water"should read "caution extremely cold water, floor in our room very squeaky. Please don't eat the Cumberland sausage for breakfast as they are totally disgusting and an insult the people of Cumbria.
Stayed in the Hadrian suite, extremely poor hotel but would recommend the French bistro in Hexham to anyone.

Although there were a few issues with 1 of the boilers during your stay everything was done to keep the hotel running smoothly and operational.
The boiler was not off constantly each day, heaters were provided within rooms and public areas along with the fire in the Bar Lounge.
I am very sorry to hear you did not enjoy your stay here at the the George and that the food and standards of the hotel was not to your liking.

If you are thinking of staying here then it is worth upgrading and trying the Hadrian suite, it is up to date and has a lovely lounge attached .
Only slight complaint is that it is above reception and there is some noise from the stairs, downstairs telly and someone decided to vacuum at 2.00am .
Swimming pool and sauna / steamroom are quiet and easily accessed from the hotel.
Lovely garden and exceptional views of the river.

Room Tip: Upgrade to the Hadrian suite

I am very pleased to hear that you enjoyed your stay here with us and that you found the Hadrian’s Suit with its stunning views to be very nice and relaxing.
How ever i would like to apologise for the rude awakening of a hoover, this has since been rectified and had you have made reception aware during your stay it would have been dealt with promptly for you. We look forward to seeing you again hopefully some time in the New Year. Thank you

Recently stayed there whilst walking the Hadrian's Wall.
On arrival i was met with a broad smile and was given keys to a tired Double room.
The bathroom had damp across most of the ceiling and the cistern handle was coming out from the wall.
The door to the bathroom was split at the bottom and was clearly in need of replacement.
After complaining i was upgraded to a family room which was done with speed and efficiency, however the bathroom again was tired showing signs of discoloured grout and mouldy bath sealant.
The main rooms walls also showed signes of water damage from the room above and was at best patched up but clearly visible.
The set meal in the evening was fine and the breakfast also was fine.
Overall my my experience was ok, but this Hotel is in dire need of a modern facelift.
The modern and well equiped reception area leads to false hope when you get to the rooms i stayed in, which screamed of a bygone era and as much chinntz as you could stand. The beds were large and comfortable and clean as you might expect.
The receptionist who informed me that she had recently just started with the hotel was fantastic and very puntual.

The reception areas and public lounges are modern and very relaxing. We are due to have some rooms upgraded within the new year to a new modern spec.
Some rooms are modern and newly refurbished as we do have superior and Premiere rooms available.
Unfortunately during your stay here there were no other rooms that i could have offered you as the hotel was very busy, had there have been then of course they would have been offered to you.
I am sorry that the room which you were allocated and moved to were not up to standard, i have since had maintenance in to the rooms to carry out some work.

I booked a short stay, before reading the reviews, so was ready to be disappointed.
When arrived the room we where given had no room light, maintenance arrived in
minutes a most pleasant and helpful member of staff, to replace bulbs,
we then noticed the room hadnt been vac or dusted although the bedding was clean
On reporting this to reception, which maintenance had also done we were given an
upgrade to a lovely suite. The food was very nice all the staff where most helpful and polite
nothing too much trouble. The swimming pool was warm and peaceful not many guests used.
I agree the hotel is in need of some modernisation, but for what you pay £109 three nights ,B, B and evening meal you can't complain. I would stay here again but the cleaning staff do let the hotel down.

I am very sorry that your room was not serviced to the standards required on your arrival, which was why an upgraded room was given to you as a small way of an apology.
I am very pleased though to hear that you found maintenance to be very good and prompt along with other staff being polite and helpful and that you also enjoyed the food. We look forward to seeing you return. Thank you

Stayed here for one night in September. Found hotel to need updating greatly. Toilet handle was hanging off the wall, and the service from the waiting staff at breakfast left much to be desired. Only ate here for breakfast which was average.

There was an adjoining door on between our room and the next and in the morning you could hear the other guests so loudly it was as though they were in our room! This def needs rectifying or for the hotel only to put families in adjoining rooms.

Didn't get chance to use pool do cant comment on that. Location on the river is nice.

Overall would not stay here again as not worth the money. I have written a letter to the hotel however reply not received which makes me think that customer service is not a priority for this hotel.

I am sorry you found your room, waiting staff and breakfast not to your satisfaction, guests have actually always complemented the waiting staff and food as you can see from previous Trip Advisor comments.
If your room was not to the standard you expected and you had made a complaint to reception we would have dealt with the problems raised immediately or alternatively offered you another room.

This hotel is a little jaded in parts but is so well situated that its forgiven! its literally a stroll; from Hadrians Wall and 20 mins from Kielder so well placed for discovering both newcastle and the beauty of the area. we had a room at the back looking over the gardens and river which was lovely. It was quiet and clean and staff are really helpful. The only let down was the very average food of the table d'hote menu... not a place for foodies but if you just need feeding at the end of a full dayits fine - surrounding in the bar area are modern but cosy.
Bedroom was clean and tidy - furniture a bit past its best and bathroom needed upgrading but still ok if you are after a comfy place to lay your head rather than "luxury".
hotel now owned by Shearings - the coach trip people - so a more "mature" clientele.

Room Tip: with a river view is a necessity!

I am pleased you enjoyed the hotel, gardens and views. It is situated in a beautiful part of Northumberland were there are many advantages of walks and days out.
The standard Table De hote menu is included in HB rates, however you can up grade to the a la carte menu. This is of course at an extra cost but does have offers on the set prices.
