“Nice staff shame about the place”
Reviewed 16 March 2009

After reading a number of other reviews its fair to say my partner and I had some concerns about our two night stay at the Hotel, unfortunately these were to be confirmed. We were allocated room no.120, which comes with stunning views of the river and garden, however, the decoration leaves a lot to be desired and in need of an update (wallpaper coming from the walls). Whilst we walked along the corridor on arrival we had a feeling of the cold, however, we thought that once we got into the room this would be a different case, how wrong we were!!!! As we entered we realised it was even colder, with the radiators being lukewarm at best. The corridors had a stale smell, which resembled dampness, this maybe understandable given how cold it was. I have to say at this point that this was the annex part of the hotel (back of the hotel) and was the only part of the hotel that appeared cold. The corrdiors in the main building were very warm and the rooms were most probably indicative of this. However, back to room 120, we should have on refection requested a change of room immediately, particularly as we had a baby with us but we thought maybe it would warm up later in the day. After a nice meal at the hotel. a nice quiet drink, it was back to the cold room to sleep???? Well, this would have been fine if the baby had of been warm enough. We had to bring our baby into bed to warm him up.

Things got no better the next day when we discovered we had no fresh towels and the ones we were using were the ones we'd used the previous day, which had simply been neatly folded and presented for use again. The towels were still damp and through the lack of heat in the room made it impossible for them to dry.

Coffee/Tea making facilities - yes they were there, but when we attempted to make a brew on the second day we discovered that the cups had mearly been rinsed and placed back for use with the coffee still evident in the cup and saucer.Obviously we had no drinks at this point.

Leisure - On the plus side we enjoyed the leisure facilites, the pool, sauna and steam room are well maintained, lovely!

We stayed on a two nights dinner bed and breakfast deal and found the food to be of a good standard, and altough our first morning at breakfast went without problems, on the second morning we waited 52 minutes before being served our breakfast after the order had been taken. It must be stated, however, that while the restaurant staff worked very hard there appeared to be no stucture or organisation, with the waiters/resses attending to all tables, not knowing what had been done or vice versa, hence the breakfast service on our second morning resembled something from Fawtly Towers!!!!

Overall, we enjoyed our stay, but this was merely down to the banter with the staff who were very accomodating.

One last point of interest - this may be classed as 3 star accomodation, however, no questionnaires were made available, and if we had not of complained at the end of the stay the hotel would not have known our concerns. I wonder who it is who assesses the star rating?????"

Avoid this hotel at all costs. Go to Hexham or Newcastle. Over 200 years old and looks every year of it. Undergoing renovation work, would be better if it were demolished and they rebuilt it. I had food poisoning on my final night, for only the second time in my life.

My husband and I stayed in room 104 on Saturday 21st Feb 2009 as part of a group travelling with a coach trip. We didn't expect the best, newly refurbished, bedrooms but room 104 hadn't been dusted for ages. We could write our name in the dust and had to pick toenail clippings off the bedroom carpet next to the bedside table. I daren't look under the bed! The bath taps had months of gunge around them although the bath itself was clean, as was the bedding and towels. However, it was my own fault for not complaining. I just got a load of toilet paper and cleaned up myself in the areas we had to come into contact with. I have left the gunge round the taps, and the dust on the radiator, skirting boards, bedside lamps and switches/power points in case the hotel staff don't believe how dirty the room is. The hotel is currently being refurbished and the view from our ground floor window was of old mattresses and general debris piled up in the back yard. The reception areas and dining room were all very clean and the food was excellent. I would stay again but would definitely ask for the room to be cleaned thoroughly or to be changed to another room. Others in our group didn't have the same probIem. I suppose I'm typical English who doesn't like to complain but will certainly do so in future.

We stayed in room 314 which had the noisiest creaking flloorboards on the corridor outside it., that we have ever come across. Both mornings we were wakened between 5.30 and 6 am and went on till 7.15 am by people walking past our room, which seemed to go on forever, we later found out there were 40 soldiers staying there who were on early morning manouvers, they had to come past our room to get to the dining room, of course they went past again after breakfast, both mornings! You can only imagine the noise! The room was fine but needed a thorough clean, the teacups were dirty on the welcome tray, the fan in the bathroom never worked, the whole ambiance of the hotel was very dated, it was a gem of a place waiting to be repolished! 2nd night the food was wonderful the first night it was bland and tasteless(different chefs we were told) Beautiful view from our bedroom window (which wouldnt close properly) very warm hotel pleanty of very hot water, nice staff and jolly good breakfast. Good walking area.Near to Hadrains wall Couldnt recommend until more work was done on it.

I booked this trip as an extra little xmas pressie for my hubbie. It was only £49 dinner, b+b to stay in January booking through Euro Bookings. We had already been for his birthday in October and the food was lovely, we had paid £80 dinner,b+b in October and enjoyed our stay.

The staff are very pleasant and polite. The food in the restaurant is very nice. The setting is very pretty. The only thing I would say needs improving is the very old and dated furniture, carpets etc and the woodwork is crying out for a lick of paint, is yellow and crispy and falling away from the framework. The chairs in the bar are threadbare. If this was updated would be a really nice hotel.
When we stayed in October we were given the Blue Room which was more like a suite, huge bathroom, sofas in the room etc. Very nice.
When we stayed in Jan we were in the newer (not new - just newer than the hotel itself) extension to the hotel. The room was clean enough, nice bedding etc. However we were concerned to find peoples clothes in the cupboard, we thought we may have been given someones room. We also had no towels. I rang reception and this was quickly rectified. Clothes were taken away, previous guest had checked out that day but maid obviously hadnt checked when she cleaned.

Food again was lovely, actually even better than October and such a bargain for £49 all in.
I would go back even though the decor needs updating because the staff are lovely and the food is lovely.
I would recommend for a cheap getaway but wouldnt want to have paid anymore.

We booked the George as a last minute break and after reading the other poor reviews wondered what it would be like. But forget the negative reviews, the staff were welcoming, the food excellent, I have never been anywhere where the plates were so hot, all fresh veg, choice excellent. Bedroom well furnished, bed comfy and warm. Lovely open fire even on Sunday morning. yes the stair carpet was frayed but thid did not detract from the charm, it is an old hotel and just seemed part of it..
Exceelent value for money we booked thro laterooms and found we had a bargin, but would have been pleased if we paid more as others had. An excellent base for Hadrians Wall, or out to the coast.
