“cosy, comfortable and friendly.”
Reviewed 23 April 2010

We have recently spent four nights at The George at Chollerford, I must say with some intrepidation, after reading the reviews, but can honestly say we enjoyed every minute. Our room overlooked the garden and the spa, and was quite spacious with crisp white bedding and a kingsize bed. The bathroom was a good size with bath and shower and had plently of hot water and towels. There were plenty of mirrors, a full length one in the bedroom and one over the dressing table. Also a huge one in the bathroom. The food was superb, and plenty of choice, I would think to suit everyone. There were four of us and it suited us all. Yes, sometimes there was a slight delay between courses but the Staff were all very pleasant and willing to oblige, and nothing was too much trouble. We found it very relaxing. The dining room overlooked the beautiful bridge and river which was a perfect setting to take a meal. Yes the hotel did need a bit of tlc but it was clean and comfortable. We thoroughly enjoyed ourselves.

The hotel is in a beautiful spot by the river and convenient for Hadrians wall and some lovely walks.
The food was good, but the service for meals and the bar was a bit slow and disorganized, the drinks were also quite expensive.
The room did need some updating but there was plenty of hot water and clean towels and the rooms were cleaned daily. For the amount of time we spent in the room we found it comfortable.
Would reccomend it for touring the area and walking.

We stayed over the Easter weekend, 2010 Our room way recently refurbished, plenty space. The en-suite had a bath and separate shower.
There the pleasure ended, The sofa was not designed to be sat upon for more than 10 minutes without discomfort, the 4 poster bed was a strange design, in that the base holding the matress was almost as high as the matress it'self, which meant that it was difficult to get in or out of bed without contacting some part of your anatomy on the unyielding wooden edge.
There was lots of hot water, unfortunately not much of it was coming into the radiator, only the bottom 6 inches was warm, though 2 electric heaters were supplied on request, how difficult is it to spent 2 minutes bleeding a radiator? Also TOO MUCH hot water was coming from the shower, even with it turned all the way to cold, it was too hot for a comfortable shower, and the occasional extra surge meant you had to stand out of the jet till it cooled again.
The Spa changing rooms were shabby and the gents loo smelled, the hot tub water was cloudy and foamy. The steam room, sauna and pool were very nice.
But the worst experience was the dining room. We booked for the latest allowed, 8.30, which I think is rather early for a reataurant to close. When we arrived the waited appeared to be slighly surprised by our presence. The menu was rather basic. When we had finished our starter he said were we ready for our next course, we said no, we don't like to be rushed, 2 minutes later our food appeared on the table. The meals had obviously been plated up and left in the oven, as the sauce and gravy on our respective plates was dried round the edges. No doubt the chef liked to off ASAP.
Halfway through this course, our (foreign) waiter started clearing the table next to us and spraying it with cleaning fluid, when we asked him not to, he just looked puzzled and carried on, not a pleasent dining experience!!
The breakfast was no better, 2 of the 3 mornings there were no tables cleared and re-set, and once we were asked to wait in the bar next door. Out of sight, out of mind, we waited for 10 minutes until we once again had to stand waiting to be seated.
On the Sunday morning we were seated quite quickly, and served promptly, then watched as others who had come in before us fumed while looking at their watches, as the deadline for their coach departure loomed.
So all in all, £400 of disappointment. The hotel is in an excellent position, nice view of the river and bridge from the dining room. The staff did their best, but are obviously under-trained and over-worked.

The building and outside look lovely - but once you go inside and along the long long corridor to our room which was at the back of the building - were not told there was a short route - the corridor, walls, doors and carpet were dirty. Our room was basic but good however the bathrom looked like it had not been updated for around 20 years - staff were helpful, dinner was not bad but overpriced - breakfast was a shables on both days and we had to leave our room on one of the days after arriving back at 4.30pm because it had not been cleaned. No management around to lead the staff who were obvously very thin on the ground - leisure facilities good but again showers and black mould on ceilings - this is a real shame that this hotel has been let slip - spoke to previous people who had been around October/Nov. and they said it had gone down hill badly.

We booked this hotel for a relaxing break and that is what we got.We arrived fairly late on the Saturday 8.0pm and were greeted by a very polite receptionist. The room was perfectly adaquate with everything we needed .The three course meal had several choices which should suit everyone and the staff were very pleasant and polite at all times. We had full use of the leisure facilities which was a bonus so took full advantage of the spa and swimming pool. I feel i had to write this as there has been a lot of very negative reports written regarding this Hotel yes it is needing updating in decor but this will be carried out in about six weeks time. It is a pity the previous guests appeared to have had a bad experience or were perhaps "over picky"but we found this a great value for money hotel and will certainly be returning again.

paid £120 for 2 nights dinner bed and breakfast excellent value, rooms were basic but cozy, nice big bathroom with a massive bath with plenty of hot water. The staff in the restauraunt were very good if not a little to attentive hence no wait inbetween courses, the food was very nice although limited choice with a £6-95 supplement for steak. The breakfast is self service again with a good choice and the staff bring the drinks and toast. The hotel also has a small gym and swimming pool with a steam room and sauna and a spa bath which was empty during our stay so had a relaxing couple of afternoons,The bar is quite pricey and boasts a nice warm open fire, overall tremendous value and have already booked again.

Stayed 2 nights for our anniversary. Room small but not too bad. Only 3 channels on TV - this is 2010!! Dinner menu was limited but the food was awful - bland, watery soup, over cooked veg and just nasty. Had to wait 15 minutes for the main course plates to be cleared and then only because I asked for it. Asked twice for a slice of lemon with tea - never arrived. Not good value for money at all at £110 per night.
