We've been to Iberostar Grand Rose Hall twice now and absolutely love this resort. If you are looking for a place that's easy to get to from the east coast (only 3.5 hour flight from NYC), is right on the beach, want top class service and great food, this is the place to go!
Upon your arrival at the resort, which is only about a 20min drive from the airport, you are greeted with a cold towel and welcome drink. The hotel has a lovely, grand reception with marble floors and you immediately realize that this a classy place. Check in is quick and easy. You are assigned your own personal butler who tells you a little about the hotel facilities and how things work, and who is available throughout your stay should you want or need anything.
Both times we stayed in an Oceanview suite, which is amazing. The room is very spacious, with a table, sofa, large, comfy bed (bit on the soft side), tv, minibar, and huge bathroom with a rain forest shower, jacuzzi and two sinks. My favorite part about the room though is the oversized balcony. It has a couch and table, as well as a comfortable swing, where you can relax after a day at the beach and take in the view. The rooms (and the entire resort for that matter) are in great condition and kept very clean. Cleaning is once a day and there is also turndown service at night.
My only gripe about the room is the wifi. While it has much improved since the first time we were there, for the first day of our most recent stay the wifi wasn't working at all. When we told the reception about this, we were told that that's just the way it sometimes is for some people. I guess they were right, because sometime during our second day it started working. No problems with wifi after that.
The food at the resort is really good. There's a buffet for breakfast, lunch and dinner and for dinner they have a number of restaurants as well for which you have to make a reservation (Italian, Japanese, surf n turf etc.). If you are travelling during peak times, plan to reserve in advance of your arrival or right when you get there as the restaurants do get fully booked. We love the buffet, it's one of the best we've seen, both in terms of quality and variety (especially breakfast and dinner) and so we usually don't bother with the restaurants. The dinner buffer has a different theme every night, but there's always a Jamaican station as well as some other staples to keep everyone happy. For lunch, in addition to the buffet, there will often be something set up at the beach, such as a BBQ or jerk stations. One thing to keep in mind is that people at this resort tend to dress up a bit for dinner. Men will wear button-up shirts and slacks and women will wear dresses, particularly at the restaurants. I personally don't like wearing anything dressy or formal when on vacation, and the first time we hadn't really packed for it either, which is why I am mentioning it. You can dress down though as long as you don't show up in your swimsuit.
While the resort's beach doesn't have the whitest of sand or bluest of water, it is still really nice! It's a private beach, which means that there aren't people trying to sell you their stuff every ten minutes. There are plenty of beach chairs and umbrellas if you want to sit in the shade. You can do as little or as much as you want at the beach. There are water activities such as snorkeling and kayaking, and the resorts entertainment staff, Star Friends, organizes beach volley and other games and gives aerobics/dancing classes, among other things. They work really hard to make sure everyone has a good time and have great attitudes. Another nice thing about the beach is that there is drink service (try the Jamaica Smile), that is more consistent and faster than we've experienced at other resorts. At the same, there a bar right at the beach so if you don't want to wait, getting a drink yourself is really easy. While we spend most of our time at the beach, the resort has a pretty nice pool area as well, with a swim up bar and plenty of chairs.
One suggestion is to bring some $1 bills for tipping. The resort is all inclusive and tips aren't required (like they sort of are in the US) or even expected, but all of the staff works really hard to make sure the guests have a great time and tips are definitely appreciated!
All in all, this is an absolutely wonderful resort and we will be back!
