This hotel is under new management since July 2014. Steve and Lynn, as well as Mark (the manager) are just amazing folks. We actually extended our stay as we found it so agreeable and stayed a week in total.
Traveling with small children (5 and 1) can be a trying experience. We would not have known from the outside that they were so accommodating of families, but they were, and went above and beyond to make us feel welcome. They had no issue with us taking up a table in the bar/restaurant to use Wifi and basically to use it as our lounge :) They were infinitely patient with the kids and their dietary foibles.
The food was good, both the excellent cooked breakfast and the several dinners we chose to eat in the hotel. It was very convenient to have the option of eating on site and we were grateful that our meals were decent. I look forward to seeing their new menu when they develop it. The atmosphere is light, bright, and reads both cozy pub and family restaurant -- definitely not a bar.
The hotel is a listed building and is arguably the flagship heritage building of the town. It is impressive in facade and the interior is finished beautifully. Being from Canada, we got quite a thrill to walk those venerable halls. You'd expect it to be noisy but we found it very quiet for being...This hotel is under new management since July 2014. Being from Canada, we got quite a thrill to walk those venerable halls. You'd expect it to be noisy but we found it very quiet for being right in town and we were never disturbed by noise from the pub. Parking is convenient in the stable block.
The location is right at the main crossroads so convenient to everything Otley has to offer (which is considerable). The gorgeous park and playground is a five minute walk, the bus station is the same for trips to Harrowgate, and you could walk up to the Chevin Wood in about 25 minutes. We found Otley to be the perfect base from which to explore Yorkshire as it is such a pretty, friendly town, with the conveniences of a larger centre while still having the village feel we wanted to relax in.
The room was smallish and simply done, but very comfortable. The beds were great to sleep on and everything was very clean, with every need thought of (tiny sewing kits!). We had a family room that worked perfectly for us. The bathroom was exquisitely tiny but such is the challenges of a listed building and overall, a small inconvenience in what was an amazing stay.
I could not recommend this place more highly and we look forward to coming again.More
