This is the first time I have ever reviewed anything - it is a testimony to how impressed we were. I will keep it short has the other reviewers have said it all already. If you are going to spend time anywhere in the Teramo area do yourself a favour and stay at Russ & Sergio's B&B. It is absolutely top notch - I can think of nothing to fault. From their frindliness and helpfness as hosts, through the quality of the B&B itself to its convenient location (in a beautiful spot that guarantees peace and quiet but really close to everything and importantly, to the main routes for getting about). We will be going back and so will you.

We stumbled upon La Grande Quercia when searching for B&Bs in Abruzzo, wanting to stay somewhere relaxing and not too expensive while we explored the region. We were thrilled to find out that this B&B fit the description and was available! Immediately, Russ helped us, via email, research some of our family's ancestral history that is tied to the Abruzzo area. And when we arrived late in the evening and hungry, we were treated to a lovely welcome and a home-cooked meal with Russ and Sergio -- it felt like we were coming home to old friends.

The rooms are meticulously clean and well-designed, and the grounds are breathtakingly beautiful with the olive grove on the property, hyacinth filling the air, and the Gran Sasso in the distance, it truly was difficult to leave. The hosts are extremely attentive and work hard to make your experience in Abruzzo as lovely and relaxing as possible.

We will definitely come back and stay for longer next time! La Grande Quercia is one of the best B&Bs we've ever stayed at. What a fantastic experience!

Our advice: if you travel to Abruzzo, stay at La Grande Quercia near Teramo. It may well be the most comfortable and cleanest place you will ever sleep in your life and certainly one of the most charming. But it is the hospitality of the owners, Russ and Sergio, that will make your stay truly special. They put their hearts and their souls into everything they do. The key word here is caring.

Our acquaintance with Russ and Sergio began when I e-mailed to see if they would have room for my family at Christmas time. I had been looking for a place to stay in the Abruzzo region and had read the incredibly good reviews on TripAdvisor. Their response came promptly. Initially they had planned to be closed for the winter but since it was their first year and they were not sure whether they would get requests for the holiday season they graciously offered to open up the guest house (the Bella Vista Suite) to us and bring us breakfast. The photos of the Bella Vista that they included looked fabulous, and we were really grateful that they would accommodate us.

In subsequent emails it came up that we were visiting the region with the purpose of finding the hometown of my grandfather who had immigrated to the US when he was 16 years old. All that we had to go on was a photocopy of his passport from 1913.
Russ and Sergio responded by saying, “E-mail a scan of the passport and we will see if we can help you.” So began a great adventure. Sergio and Russ were amazingly helpful. They translated the Italian and interpreted the handwriting on the passport and in a couple of days we had information that no one in the family had known before. Not only did they confirm the name of my grandfather’s hometown (Tortoretto), they actually drove there… 45 minutes from La Grande Quercia… and took the copy of the passport to the Municipal Office to request their assistance. I soon received an email with their enthusiastic descriptions of the unique beauty of the little village.

They searched phonebooks and called everyone they could find with the same name as my grandfather as well as that of the man who chaperoned him on his trip to the states. By the time we arrived at La Grande Quercia the good folks at the Tortoretto Municipal Office, a wonderful local historian, and Russ and Sergio had traced the names, dates, and places of many ancestors that were all new to my family. Russ and Sergio arranged a meeting for us at the Municipal Office and took us to the village where we met with the lovely folks involved in the search and were given documents and a hand written family tree from the information they were able to compile. Tortoretto Alto is stunning… a lovingly restored medieval hilltop village with a panoramic view … turn your head and you can take in the Gran Sassos and the Adriatic Sea with olive groves and vineyard dotting the hillsides in between. We had lunch in a lovely little restaurant that had been in operation since 1906 and visited a wonderfully restored church where it is possible my great grandparents were married. It was the thrill of a lifetime! And it would never have happened if not for Sergio and Russ and their caring ways.

I would love to go on but you are reading this to get an idea of what La Grande Quercia is like. It is…. aahhhhhh! … absolutely lovely.

We stayed in the Bella Vista Suite guest house, which is free standing and a few steps from the main house. It is fantastic! Every detail is so well thought-out! The beds have memory mattresses… it does not get more comfortable than that! … and they have wonderful down-filled duvets and plenty of great pillows. The bathroom is perfect -- roomy with a very clever shower. You can get in and shut the door and adjust the temperature and pressure before actually stepping into the spray. Big fluffy towels are kept toasty warm on a heated rack. There is a little cabinet for storing toiletries and to place your clothes. Even the soap is creamy and smells great!

The room itself is spacious with a very fresh airy feeling and it is simply but very tastefully decorated. There is a king size bed and plenty of room for the brand new single bed that Russ and Sergio moved in for our son. The room is well-appointed with nightstands, a love seat, coffee table and comfy chairs with footstools. There is plenty of closet space and places to put things. I am visually impaired and appreciated the good lighting and the windows with curtains that softly filtered light from outside. As to cleanliness, I would have thought we were the first guests ever to stay there! It was immaculate!

Sergio’s cooking is incomparable! If I recall correctly some of the things grown on the grounds of La Quercia include olives, figs, apricots, cherries, walnuts, blackberries, pomegranates and lemons. Most of these found their way to the table in the few days we were there. Sergio finds creative ways to preserve the bounty of the growing season so it can be enjoyed in the middle of winter. Breakfast included croissants filled or plain, home-baked fig, cherry, and lemon tarts and a special holiday treat of home-baked panettone as well as yogurt, fresh orange juice, tea and coffee.

By the time of our visit, more guests had booked a stay so while we were there we had the pleasure of spending time with some folks from the UK. We were all invited to join Sergio and Russ for dinner and Oh, what a treat! Our first encounter with Russ and Sergio’s cooking was a beautifully arranged antipasto of delicate hams. the best cheese I remember ever eating, salami, perfectly marinated vegetables and wonderful stuffed cherry peppers. This was followed by risotto with coveted wild porcini mushrooms gathered by a friend and generously shared with their guests. Bread and local wine and Sergio’s wonderful Christmas cookies, lemon-almond stuffed with apricot jam, completed the meal. Our next meal was equally enticing… tender cuttlefish with peas and onions followed by seafood pasta with shrimp and calamari… more fantastic local wine and a dessert of Sergio’s chocolate cherry surprise. While we enjoyed the conversation and company Sergio broke out some incredible homemade liqueurs … one a heady walnut and the other a rush of summer blackberries… I could feel the sun on my back while drinking that!

The interior of the main house is a stunningly beautiful balance of clean lines and rustic charm. White walls with stone-framed arched doorways, a big fireplace and the same fresh open feel of the guest house.

Russ and Sergio took a lot of the guesswork out of our trip providing us with a shorter more scenic route for our arrival as well as advice on places to go and things to see in the region taking into account our interests as well as our limited time.

During our stay in Abruzzo, we squeezed in a trip to La Civatella di Tronto a medieval fortress and village. We also did a little beach combing in a chilly fog on the Adriatic.
Our dream vacation now is to return to Russ and Sergio’s for a few weeks at a time of year when we can explore the National Park and local wineries….spend some time at the beach … take a day trip or two …but making sure to allow ourselves plenty of time to just relax at La Grande Quercia.

We saw the reviews on tripadvisor and thought La Grande Quercia would make a perfect weekend break from Rome - we were not disappointed. Just over two hours by car from the city center and it feels like a different world.

The two host are lovely, generous, people who have obviously put a lot of heart and soul in the restoration of this old farm house. When we arrived a couple hours late, they were immediately welcoming and helpful (beer, wine, coffee, tea all offered on arrival). When we showed interest in the renovations they had undertaken over the past three years they gladly took us on a tour of the whole place (including their own quarters - stunning kitchen). The rooms and common areas are modern, spacious and comfortable, but the real delight is their beautiful garden which is set off by a massive oak tree on one side and the pool on the other. In between you'll find all the lovely specialties of the region growing along the edge of their own olive grove (including chickens!).

The region itself is very beautiful and unpretentious. Nestled in the foothills around Teramo, there is great access to the national parks (real moutains) to the West and the beaches of the Adriatic coast to the East. Overall, one of the nicest places we've stayed during our two years in Italy and with out doubt the best value for money.

If you are visiting Rome, don't miss the relatively unknown but wonderful rural delights of Abruzzo and, if you go, don't miss a chance to stay with Russ and Sergio at La Grande Quercia.

'La Grand Quercia' .. 'The Big Oak' we came to stay at this beautiful bed and breakfast in the stunning countryside of the Gran Sasso region to celebrate a special birthday of my very special friend, Peter. Even before arriving Russ and Sergio were the most helpful and informative of hosts. Russ sent some excellent travel advice and links of how to get there via e-mail. On arrival we were stunned by Russ Sergio's beautiful house and our room the ‘Bella Vista’ was as amazing as the photos on the website. Stylish and chic with a homely feel as well, it was warm and inviting. The Ensuite bathroom was well laid out and the walk in shower was a real treat. The best thing was the Memory foam mattress that provided more than good nights sleep! Even the duvet had a temperature adjusting feature in the fabric which meant it adjusted to your body temperature through the night.

There were some nice creature comforts such as some local fruit in a bowl and glasses for water. Russ and Sergio made us feel very welcome and gave us a tour of the house. The other rooms were just as stylish and beautiful in decor. There was a real sense that this was not just accommodation but a home as well and it reflected our host’s excellent taste and a sense that they had put the best of everything of their travel experience into their Bed and Breakfast. They were very accommodating with breakfast times both for earlier and later. The breakfast was not the typical continental that one gets in larger hotels but home made cakes (made by our hosts) and fresh fruit. Plenty of tea and coffee and selection juices with cereal and yogurts and home made jam (again made by Russ and Sergio). The breakfast room and lounge were as lovely as the rest of the house and rooms. Again a real sense that everything had been well thought out in terms of decor and style.

They gave us lots good information about where to go and what to see. The garden and pool were a joy to relax in after a day of driving and sight seeing. Even though it was October the weather was hot all the way and I managed to brave the pool. If you want to see this stunning region there would no better place to stay. We much preferred La Grande Quercia over the large and somewhat impersonal hotel that we stayed in on the way out in Rome. Much better value for money and far nice and friendlier helpful hosts. We would definitely recommend and return. There is plenty to see and do and good places to eat and drink to. Teramo is a nice town to visit and the National Park as well. Easy to reach good beaches too. Larger towns such as Ascoli are not far either (about 1 hours drive). You do need a car to get about but the drives are wonderful and not to crazy on the country roads. Easy to hire from main cities such as Rome or more locally but the local one we used was bit difficult to find. Accessible from Rome 2 to 2 1/2 hours or from Pescara which is closer (45 min).

We would like to say a big thank to Russ and Sergio for making stay so special. It made Peter's birthday and my week. Bella Buono La Grand Quercia.

Mucho Grazie Russ and Sergio

Liz and Peter

We had a great time in this beautiful B&B. The enthousiastic owners are very welcoming and friendly. The room (we stayed in the Bella Vista Suite) was very clean and well furnished, including a very good bed. The surrounding is very beautiful and a good starting point for trips to the Grand Sasso, Teramo or the beautiful villages in the mountains. Russ and Sergio have plenty of tips what to do and they even cooked us a fantastic meal. I can recommend this B&B to everybody who comes to the Abruzzi.
