“Really nice”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed 5 August 2014

At Stirabout Lane we had a really nice and welcoming experience. The house was very cozy and well kept with a beautiful garden full of flowers and a little pond.
The room was well furnished and the bathroom very clean (the only problem was the shower, which had only little pressure).
Breakfast was very good and very rich.
We will never forget the warm and genuine hospitality of our hosts!

Behind the unadorned storefront entrance to this B and B lies a treasure trove of surprises - all of which add up to a superlative place to stay. There are six rooms, spread between the main building and a sort of annex above a garage that apparently dates back generations, rustically constructed of barn wood, lending a country atmosphere to the astounding gardens in the back. Daphne is a great cook and a cheerful and hospitable hostess, her husband a cabinet-maker, whose skill is evident in the detailed precision of the woodwork, tiling, and furnishings in the sparkling rooms. Parking is available off street. Rathdrum is unremarkable as far as I could tell, but has a bank and a grocery store. We picked up the makings for a picnic and enjoyed a picnic dinner on the beautiful deck at Stirabout Lane - so I have no idea what the dining options are in town. We were pretty sure it couldn't get better than what we had! Then we planned our next day's route in the comfy sitting room. Thanks, Daphne, for the lovely stay.

We arrived at the unassuming front entrance to this remarkable B&B about 4PM. Daphne showed us around then up to our room. We booked for 2 people, but got a beautiful room with 2 single and one double bed, that was heavenly! A wonderful shower, beautifully furnished and decorated room and centuries old building was truly spectacular. We had coffee, tea and cookies/buscuits in the room and a delicious breakfast in the morning. There were beautiful gardens out the back of the property, a very tastefully decorated sitting room; artwork, woodwork displayed very nicely. Ask Daphne to show you some of the beautiful bog oak her husband has collected over the years - please insist that she not use it for firewood!
We have seen lots of B&B's over the years and this one tops them all. Maybe it was the history of the building, how everything was spotless, the view from the bedroom, we loved the way it has been brought to life again. And to top it off, it was very reasonably priced!! Daphne allowed us to park the car at the rear of the building, to get it off the street.

Room Tip: We were in room #3, but all looked to be equally excellent quality; 1 & 2 are on the street side...

We loved everything! A very warm place and a very funny and warmhearted landlady.
There is a very nice common room with an open fire, al lot of books, a tv, two big sofas... . a nice backyard, too (ok, it rained when we were there but it looked very nice).
The bedroom was very cosy, and we would have loved to stay longer, especially to try the complete breakfast menu back and forth and back again. (((o:
Three houses down the road there is a very nice pub for one or two pints and also for reasonable and very good lunch and dinner.

Thanks a lot, we had a great time.

A great location for trips within the Wicklow Mountains, to the Avoca Mill, to Glendalough... only an hour away from Dublin. A lot of other guests hiked the Wicklow Mointain trail and got their luggage delivered to the next accomodation and were brought to the starting point of the route of the day.

Have we recommended it already?
We highly do! (o:

As a lone traveller... it's lovely to be welcomed into such a warm friendly atmosphere. A greeting at the door by Daphne and a tour of the property showing me the facilities was great! The rooms are fresh and modern and are what many of us try to achieve in our own homes, but it's no easy feet when you have so many guests through the door. There is also a beautiful garden you can share with the family too.. if the weather is kind to you! And if the weather isn't kind, sit in the lounge in front of the roaring fire.
Daphne was also very accomodating with regards to specific dietary needs too, which was such a relief, and having tried a few of the different breakfasts available.. (i was there for 5 nights); I can honestly say I could not fault the quality or portion size.
For those wanting to explored the sites of Co. Wicklow - staying at Stirabout Lane was a great location as most places were rarely more than 45 minutes away. Daphne was also very helpful for providing information on the places to visit, which helped me organise an itinerary so that i could fit as much into my stay as possible.

Room Tip: All the rooms are good.
