Awana Hotel
Ranked #7 of 10 Hotels in Genting Highlands
Reviewed 8 December 2007

Stayed here for one night in September 2007. Unlike other hotels which has their lobby in one grand hall, this hotel has a long lobby that also doubles as a walk-way. It is quite obvious that this hotel is aging. The rooms and the corridors seem to be from another time (i.e. 1970's) which I think destroys the ambiance for most people. The hotel could also use more lighting as it could get quite dark in the lobby and in the rooms at night.

The room itself is reasonably clean though I discovered some sludge-like substance in the bathroom's sink area. A downside is that there is no air-conditioning in the rooms but it's no big deal. Genting is several hundred meters above sea level and is relatively cooler than KL.

Their breakfast and dinner set is fine. It has more Malaysian fare which is fine for a foreigner to sample. Again, their restaurant area could use a bit more lighting.

Another downside to Awana is its location. There are few attractions nearby. Getting to the casino and to most attractions require a cable car or taxi ride which may take several minutes.

Overall, I probably wouldn't stay in this hotel again. The ambiance destroyed it for me. The stay was just not as pleasant as in other hotels.

Terrible!!!! At first, i expected romantic honeymoon in genting, but it turned into disaster because of this hotel. Dont be distracted with its grand and large lobby, i spent two nights (i booked for 3 nights), i checked out earlier because we couldnt stand for it. i stayed at superior one condo, it was very large room, with strong bad odor. You can smell the odor not only in the room, but also in the aisle. bad and dirty carpet covered the entire floor (condo room located downstairs from the lobby). If you lucky you can meet "something in your room". I think we've met "it". the staffs is very unfriendly and cold. overall, it is very terrible, it is a disaster for a tourist, DONT TAKE IT

I was expecting a lovely weekend with cool fresh air. Boy, was I wrong! The air everywhere was just stale and smelly. There was cigarette smoke just about everywhere....in the lobby, the restaurant, the hallway, the meeting rooms and even in my own hotel room.

That's because there is NO air-conditioning. And they say they offer "luxurious comfort". It's a big lie. Having to open the windows and balcony door to make it less stuffy, the cigarette smoke from other balconies also made it's way into my room.

At night, it wasn't very cool either. I couldn't sleep for half the night because it was very warm even with the fan on full blast.

Needless to say, I left the place feeling even more tired, and with itchy eyes and stuffy nose (due to all that smoke). I'm never going back there again!

Hmmm... I have had some similar experiences to the other reviewers of this property so far, however my overall impression is a little different.

Let's start with the negatives:
1. Lack of air conditioning in the rooms (although this really is a minor irritation as the temperature was a beautiful 23-27 degrees the whole time that we stayed there).
2. Cracked window just taped up with gaffer tape - rather than being replaced. Come on guys, how hard is it to replace these problems as and when they happen.
3. Getting to Genting, as mentioned by a previous reviewer, is a pain in the you-know-where. The Awana cable car was not operating, so we had to go by bus to the Genting cable car. A drag.
4. Check in was protracted and problematic. How long have you guys been doing this? 15 minutes to check in for something booked and paid for 3 months in advance is just unacceptable.

The positives.
1. The facilities of the hotel are extensive - pools, spa, gym, billiard room, golf course, golf driving range, eco sports centre (although in fairness we didn't take advantage of it) and fitness track, amongst many others.
2. The rooms are nice notwithstanding the lack of air con. The views from the rooms are good.
3. It is not crowded - in contrast to the hotels up at Genting itself.
4. The buffet is amongst the best buffets that I've ever eaten at. After a disastrous experience at First World Hotel (renamed Third World Hotel by the travellers in our party) in Genting, we restricted our eating to the Awana, and were spoilt for choice.
5. The golf course is beautifully maintained, as are most of the public areas.

Notwithstanding the negatives, I rate this property highly. There are some very good staff, and as mentioned the buffet is first class. This was my second trip there and I will undoubtedly return.

Well.......having read previous review(s), i am not surprised when people think that they are deceived. The facade of the hotel IS somewhat, hmm......ordinary.......too ordinary, actually. The long walk from the parking area towards the check-in counter didnt help as well.....its like walking through an old shopping mall.
Appearance wise, the hotel looked old, the surroundings are not impressive at all - it lacks that 5-star hotel wow factor.

However i found the counter service to be fair...the staff are friendly and soft spoken.
The room that i was in (i dont remember the number.....well....fancy that....that is EXACTLY the problem...this hotel is soo forgettable...hmm), is quite spacious. The bathroom is ordinary as well.
The room has no air-conditioning system.....it is a surprise.....i guess bcoz previously Genting Highland was lot cooler than it is now...so the room IS stuffy when i first arrived. So i switched on the fan, full power, and open all the windows and the sliding door to the verandah... Yes..they have a verandah for each rooms....so, be careful if u have any toddlers.
I think the food is nice....wide varieties...and the taste is good....(well....one man's meat may be another man's poison)...but compared to some other hotels....the taste is good.

The consolation is the view from the room....it is extremely very nice. And the mist.....at night....(i leave all the windows and slif=ding door open even at night), the thick mist even get into the room.

If you're considering this hotel, forget about it!
It's nothing like what they advertised it to be on the website.

At first sight, it was a complete dump! When I rubbed my eyes and pinched myself, I realised that it was still a dump!

The service was slow. Staff was unfriendly and didnt have much of a clue of anything.

The view of the golf course was probably the only thing that made me feel a little less ripped-off about my purchase.

Breakfast was stale and unhygienic. Even the egg tasted "wrong". The buffet hall was overcrowded, mainly with children running around.

Getting to the central Genting entertainment area was a hassle, having to wait and queue for a bus to get to the cable car only to queue some more. Getting back to the hotel was at an non-negotiable price by taxi. It was the same price I had paid to get to Awana from KL city-centre. Probably would have been smarter to take the taxi back to KL rather than back to Awana.

Talk about poor service, I recall being in the lift with the concierge who was paying me nasty looks for no reason. Also, when we had hit the ground floor, he was pushing to get out before us.

To top it all off, when I returned from the trip, my credit card statement showed a double charge! It has been a month now and this issue is yet unresolved.

The night I spent there cost more than most of the hotels up in Genting highlands. It was not the ideal golf resort it made itself out to be. The decor resembled and old ski lodge from the 1980's. As a matter of fact it did smell much like the an old bookstore.... it had a musky feel to it all.

The pool and gym did not look enticing at all. Another strange thing was that water in the pond full of koi fish and the fountain feature had been doped with a blue dye. Perhaps to hide the filthiness of the water. I found this to be odd and even more damaging to the appearance of the hotel.

Bad service, bad food, bad atmosphere.
