Owner description: Less than 200 kilometres south of Paris, nestling between the cities of Tours and Blois, is a haven of poetry. A natural oasis, a headland stretching out 40 metres above the wild Loire, Domaine de Chaumont-sur-Loire, owned by the Centre Region, welcomes the public all year round to its chateau and park and, from April to the end of October, to the unmissable International Garden Festival. Whatever the season, the chateau - once the home of Catherine de Medici, Diane de Poitiers and Princess de Broglie - beckons you indoors to admire its welcoming and lavishly furnished interiors. The International Garden Festival has been providing a unique panorama of landscape design all over the world since 1992. At the same time a source of ideas and a nursery for talent, the Festival gives an extra boost to the art of gardens and gains the interest of both the public and those in the trade by displaying new flower arrangements, new materials, new ideas and new approaches. The diversity and the high quality of the projects have contributed to the Festival's international reputation, which has become an indisputable meeting place for displaying the work of a new generation of landscape gardeners, architects, designers or gardeners.

“Allow yourself plenty of time !”
Reviewed 20 May 2014

Great place to visit. The chateau is really interesting, although there are better ones that have been fully restored. However the gardens are really superb and needs lots of time, at least three or four hours, to fully view all the different areas. As a package it is great value.

“My favourite Chateau- so far.”
Reviewed 21 April 2014

It is a most beautiful chateau, set in wonderful gardens. Dating from the 15th century and occupied into the 20th century, it is connected with great names from French history. Filled with some wonderful artworks and furnishings, you could easily feel at home here, if money was no object. The stables and other buildings in the gardens nearby are also very well worth visiting.

“Chaumont International Garden Festival - a great day out!”
Reviewed 23 March 2014

France is renowned for its formal gardens. Here at Chaumont every year is something a little different. A themed garden design festival that attracts designers from all over the world as well as France. Living locally we are lucky to be able to visit a couple of times. The festival opens in April until October, so over the months the gardens are constantly changing. There are a couple of eateries on site as well as a very good restaurant. Chaumont has a very good shop as well, with a good selection of practical items as well as gift possibilities. It's very easy to spend a morning or an afternoon there just walking around the gardens. There is a gardens only admission. But if you want to make a day of it, an all inclusive ticket is available which includes the chateau and private grounds. Really good place to visit. From Chinon it's about a 1hr 40 drive.

“Besides the Château, it's an Arts & Nature Centre too”
Reviewed 15 January 2014

There is so much to see, visiting this Château, which isn't very big but it has rare painted ceilings, majolica floors, furniture from different centuries, excellent wallpaper, etc. and best views towards the Loire River and its islands. The English landscaped park covers an area of 21 hectares and was designed by Henri Duchêne. There are a lot of installations by famous modern artists, either permanent or temporary. The stables were designed by Paul-Ernest Sanson (1877) and the Saddle Room, considered one of the best in France, contains harnesses made by Hermès!!! I was lucky to visit the place the last day of the International Gardens Festival and enjoy the exhibits. There is a big restaurant near the South entrance but there is also a small, very nice Café inside the Château. The East entrance has more than 200 large steps uphill but you are comforted by the River Loire views.

“Great Views and Grounds”
Reviewed 29 December 2013

The Chateau is one of the more interesting ones in the Loire Valley. The design and layout is similar to other chateaus, but each has its own story to tell. The artwork and artefacts from different periods help to give insights about the importance of these buildings in French history. The stained glass exhibition was also interesting. The view from the Chateau over the surrounding valley and river is simply stunning on a clear summer's day. The grounds were presented and maintained. The Chateau's stables were impressive and definitely worth seeing. We spent a very enjoyable afternoon at Chateau de Chaumont.
