Owner description: Less than 200 kilometres south of Paris, nestling between the cities of Tours and Blois, is a haven of poetry. A natural oasis, a headland stretching out 40 metres above the wild Loire, Domaine de Chaumont-sur-Loire, owned by the Centre Region, welcomes the public all year round to its chateau and park and, from April to the end of October, to the unmissable International Garden Festival. Whatever the season, the chateau - once the home of Catherine de Medici, Diane de Poitiers and Princess de Broglie - beckons you indoors to admire its welcoming and lavishly furnished interiors. The International Garden Festival has been providing a unique panorama of landscape design all over the world since 1992. At the same time a source of ideas and a nursery for talent, the Festival gives an extra boost to the art of gardens and gains the interest of both the public and those in the trade by displaying new flower arrangements, new materials, new ideas and new approaches. The diversity and the high quality of the projects have contributed to the Festival's international reputation, which has become an indisputable meeting place for displaying the work of a new generation of landscape gardeners, architects, designers or gardeners.

This year the gardens were about the 7 sins with a new them each year. It's almost like RHS Chelsea so it's a must for keen gardeners (and for those not so not so keen). The chateau is beautifully located overlooking le Loir. The audio-guide explains everything so well and adds to the enjoyment of the visit. After the visit one can enjoy a drink at the chateau cafe.

This is NOT a review of the Chateau, but just of the gardens which have the theme of 'Sin' this year. There are 24 gardens which are renewed each year on a different theme and I have to say this year is not the best. There are several very good gardens, but none has the wow factor. Nevertheless this is a good afternoon out and the facilities and other areas within the park, particularly the Prés du Goualoup, are well worth visiting. We didn't do the chateau because we ran out of steam as it was very hot! The views from the gardens across the Loire are stunning.

Chaumont is a wonderfully located chateau. It sits overlooking the village below with a narrow line of houses between the river Loire and the escarpment the chateau is on. The chateau is nice for a visit with pretty gardens. It's not the best in the Loire, but the town and views looking towards Chaumont from across the river are amongst the best photos you will get on your trip.

We visited several chateaus during our trip through the Loire Valley, and while they all do a serviceable job at bringing their histories to life, Chateau de Chaumont went beyond that, showcasing artwork that commented on the chateau itself, while also hosting the incredible garden festivals on the grounds around the castle.

First of all, this is a beautiful chateau with a majestic and sweeping view of the Loire Valley. The tour of the Chateau begins with a strong introduction of the key players from the chateau’s past. It seemed that only half of the chateau was restored and preserved, but that’s fine. It was actually the unpreserved, decayed portions that we found so fascinating. So many historical sites close off areas from the public; Chateau de Chaumont encourages visitors to explore them. Not only that, they invite modern artists to interpret the ruined bedrooms and storerooms, presenting their artwork amidst the peeling wallpaper and broken doorways. The chateau had plenty of staff in the restored rooms to help explain things, but in the unrestored rooms, you were on your own. While exploring these areas, we often felt like we had the place to ourselves. The nearby carriage house and stables are also worth a visit.

Then there’s the gardens and the garden festival. As avid gardeners, we enjoyed the kitchen garden immensely. The organization is doing a great job preserving rare heirloom varietals using organic processes. The garden festival, exploring the theme of The Seven Deadly Sins, was hit-and-miss, but there were some outstanding pieces that demonstrated a lot of ingenuity. The garden festival is a day’s worth of exploration on its own and we didn’t realize how large it is.

All-in-all, there’s a lot to do here and it’s well worth a full day. There are several restaurants on site, and for anyone travelling there on two-wheels, there are secure bike lock-ups along with storage lockers located right behind the ticket booth and entrance.
