In my month traveling Italy, this was one of my top stays! Tuscania's location is the ideal base for day trips to key "minor sites" in the central regions of the country. Some of our highlights include the Etruscan Tombs in Tarquinia, Villas Farnese Caprarola and Lante, ancient lake and hilltop towns, the incredible Orvieto, and Regional parks. The list of day trip options is extensive and most entries were free or very inexpensive.
Eddie P's apartment sits in the heart of the walled ancient town of old buildings and cobbled lanes. Secure behind a locked gate, one enters a shared courtyard prior to entering the apartment. The apartment is fully furnished, very clean and quite spacious. Note that he does not offer WIFI nor is there television. Instead, Eddie offers a wide variety of DVD's for movie watching. A local woman is just a phone call away if you have questions or issues.
Although Eddie provided directions to park our car a bit closer, we parked outside the walls (truth be told, that made it necessary to stop at the pastry shop where the best croissants ever are sold!).
The walled section is not a tourist area - we saw no souvenir shops, ATM's, street vendors selling flowers and junk, or waiters pressuring you to enter their restaurants. The restaurants are exceptional. The atmosphere is small-town quiet and friendly - people exchange smiles and greetings. Most speak only Italian and so non-Italian speakers have to really work at communicating at times, but we were always successful with that. If you are lost, most likely someone will walk you to your destination then just give you directions. The buildings are old and beautiful - residents take good care of them and embellish them with ornaments or greenery or something.
Finally, Eddie texted me once we settled in to make sure all was good (which it was). I strongly recommend staying in Tuscania and at Eddie's apartment!
