Owner description: Bio-Ken is a research centre, which deals with reptiles, especially snakes and snake-bite. Located less than 5 minutes drive from the hotels in Watamu - Kenya, it houses the largest collection of Snakes in East Africa and is open to the public. There are about 127 different snake species in Kenya. Of these only 18 have caused human fatalities and only another 6 could kill you. Another 10 could cause you a lot of pain and the remaining 93 or so, are non-venomous nor dangerous.

My children LOVE visiting Bio-Ken, The guided tour is fantastic, you learn a great deal, have a chance to handle snakes ( not the nasty ones !) Its well worth a visit.

We were taken on a very interesting tour by one of the Keepers. He was very well informed about all the snakes habitats, diets etc. Also had the opportunity to handle the snakes. The Brown House snake was very easy to handle. They also milk the snakes of venom and keep stocks of Anti-Venom as the African Puff-Adder is very active in the area and bites are common among the Farmers.

Even if you don,t like snakes this is a must place to visit. Take your camera, and don,t worry you will not be bitten.

It's a wonderful place to visit for a couple of hours. Our very knowledgeable guide, Geoffrey, was happy to answer any questions we had and you can interact with the snakes and take great photographs. They also do "snake safari's" which I am sure will be very enjoyable.
