Owner description: Aqua Ventures is an owner operated company established in Watamu in January 1990. Steve and Helen Curtis, the proud owners of the company, have successfully managed Aqua Ventures and moulded it into what is considered one of Kenya's leading dive centres. Steve an ex-military diver from Zimbabwe has been diving in Kenya since 1982. Helen, Kenyan by birth, has been diving since 1989. Watamu, being the first established Marine Park and reserve in Kenya, with its superior underwater topography and uncluttered beaches made it the natural location for Steve and Helen to start their business. From humble beginnings at the Ocean Sports Resort, Aqua Ventures operates three diving boats and has a well equipped diving centre with 3 compressors and over 50 sets of well maintained diving equipment.

“Safe, organised & friendly”
Reviewed 11 May 2011

Steve Curtis reminded me of another man at a wonderful dive operation in Belize. Both clocked that I was nervous, stepped in exactly when needed, to do exactly what was required, then backed off again. I guess when it's your own business & therefore reputation on the line, it's in your interests to be aware & keep an eye on people, but without making them feel at all under scrutiny.

A tropical storm was over Madagascar that, making the ocean at beautiful Watamu abnormally choppy. My husband has many years' experience of diving in South Africa, but was moaning about the conditions & poor visibility. I came back from the double-dive elated, having really built my confidence, because I'd learnt that I COULD cope with less than ideal conditions (& had seen lots of beautiful fish, even in the reduced vis, which was the whole point!). With Steve in charge, I felt in the best hands.

Staff will carry your tank to the boat if you choose, & the boat crew are all divers themselves. We were sat down for a thorough dive-briefing at the dive centre, which demonstrated good discipline. There was a nice atmosphere on the boat & I felt at ease.

“A great, friendly dive company”
Reviewed 5 May 2011

We recently did a 3 day/ 6 dive package with Aqua Ventures and had a great time. We have not done a huge amount of diving yet since passing our PADI Advanced training but the staff instantly made us feel comfortable, confident and safe. The hire equipment was all in good condition and is clearly well looked after. Dive briefings were good, dive groups were small and the guides were great at pointing out interesting creatures. Visibility was generally very good and we saw a range of things from nudibranches and leaf fish up to turtles and a baby shark. OK - so there isn't the abundance of marine life that you'd perhaps see at the Red Sea, but it was still a very enjoyable range of dive sites. Plus the sites were all generally within a 10-15 minute boat ride from the Resort, which was ideal.

The boat crew were all friendly and helpful, making sure your kit was set up ok, lugging tanks around and helping to get kit on and off between dives. Aqua Ventures are based on site at the Ocean Sports Resort. Staying on site made it very handy for the early starts to catch the tides. If you fancy a few days diving in the area we would definitely recommend Aqua Ventures!

“Aqua Ventures - get adventurous in Kenya!”
Reviewed 27 February 2011

Aqua Ventures in based in Watamu, Kenya. It's on the Kenyan coast which if you just want to lounge on the beach then that is all well and good BUT if you want to actually do some activities then you need to talk to Steve and Helen Curtis as they have adventure activities dialled. I head down to the coast on a regular basis and have tried out there diving, mountain biking and kayaking. Watamu really works for all those activities and personally I can recommend mountain biking down to the Sabaki river route or the Arubuko Sokoke trip as great rides - there's a fair bit of sand on the forest trip but get your technique sorted and you'll really enjoy. For kayaking they have proper kayaks for more advanced paddlers with great spray decks - the waves at the reef great fun and plenty of great cruises in along the shore to nearby bays. For begginers they also have open canoes which are far easier to paddle and the bay is perfect - sheltered and very calm as the tide goes out. For the diving I've only done 2 sites so far so I'll try to post more as to which ones are the best. Aqua Ventures is a PADI dive centre and Steve is VERY safety orientated so I can certainly recommend this centre very highly.

“Best Diving in Kenya”
Reviewed 26 November 2009

Watamu offers the best diving in Kenya. The dive sites are located within the Watamu Marine Reserve. Consequently, the density of fish and coral is outstanding.

I regularly dive at Aqua Ventures, located at Ocean Sport club in Watamu and run by Steve and Helen Curtis.

This is by far the best operation along the Kenyan coast. The sites are fantastic, the staff friendly and efficient, the training well paced and careful, the briefings comprehensive, safety is always paramount and the equipment is well cared for and properly serviced. And the prices are very competitive.

I highly recommend this to anyone looking for relaxed, safe, adventurous and enjoyable diving where there is always loads to see.

Website is: http://www.diveinkenya.com/ and there are contact details there.

Have a great dive!!
