We stayed at the Tembo Village during the low season, in May 2011. Having a one-year old baby with us, we chose to go self-catering. The apartment was nice, very spacious, with two balconies - one overlooking the amazing swimming pool and the other at the entrance into the apartment overlooking an expanse of trees - and both had places to relax, from tables and chairs to a nice Swahili style day bed on the big balcony. The beds were super comfortable, the overhead fans made the nights cooler, and both bathrooms were quite nice. The master bathroom had a window with an amazing view. The kitchen had basic equipment, though some of the pots were quite old, and it was not well set up for coffee making (we are fine with boiled coffee, but none of the pots worked well for the purpose and there was no french press). The owner was very helpful, always pleasant and accommodating. A baby cot was provided at our request, which made us very happy. When we didn't feel like cooking, we ordered the food at the restaurant. The food was quite good. We ate dinners on our balcony a couple of times. The restaurant setting was very charming and had great ambiance.

Due to the low season, we were the only tenants most of our stay and the only other people that stayed there for a couple of days at the same time were our friends from Kisumu. We had the swimming pool to ourselves! It rained in the morning a couple of times - a warm gentle rain - and it was fun to swim in the pool even in the rain. The nearest beach was about 10 minutes away.

We really enjoyed our stay at the Tembo Village and would highly recommend it to anyone.

Family run, very close to the best beach of Watamu, excellent food and a deep pool! Tembo village is a green resort with yellow rooms, and a high-standard restaurant, decorated nicely in the african style. If you search for a medium-size hotel, beautiful, with friendly staff and top class cuisine, Tembo Village is the place. Honestly, the area is full of gigantic hotels, with armies of tourists...who would enjoy factory-style accomodation in Kenya? Prices very reasonable.

I stayed at Tembo Village for three nights and was delighted by the place and by the great service from Bettina and her family. The photos on the web site hardly do Tembo Village justice - the gardens are wonderfully planted around a lovely pool. The rooms are decorated to a standard more German than the normal African finish and are really comfortable. The final accolade must go to the quality of the food - everything I was served from breakfast to dinner was delicious - the chef is excellent and the service from Bettina's children is warm and friendly as well as efficient. Thank you all for a memorable stay!

We stayed for a week during Easter holidays. An excellent retreat, very much different to what you'd expect in commerical hotels. Friendly family hospitality, great food - really!
A good quiet location. Id recommend it with two thumbs up.

Thise beautiful little resort is everything you wish: hospitable from the first to the last minute, beautiful place in a tropical garden, every meal is a joy for the eyes and of almost gastronomic standard. We stayed 5 days in Tembo Village, a few days just to relax, at the pool, on our own little terras and in the garden. Later on we made trips by tuc-tuc to Arabuko-Sokoke Forest, Gede Ruins, visited Malini and enjoyed the beautiful Watamu Marine NP. Bettina, her family and her staff practise a friendly hospitality every minute, the place is beautifull and clean. There is no question about it: Tembo Village is a diamond at the kenian coast. We'll be back!

Room Tip: Explain what you wish..you'll get it!

I stayed at Tembo village for 3 nights with a friend. We were there during the low season so got a great deal - 2500 ksh/person/night including breakfast and a 4 course dinner. They also did a great job creating a different vegetarian menu for us every night, and were very helpful arranging snorkeling and offering advice on where to go.

The compound is a great place to relax and there is a lovely pool plus an incredibly beautiful beach a short walk away and Watamu village also just a short walk away. The only problem we had was with the shower/tap water being salty and very low pressure although a friend staying in a different room had high water pressure. It's hard to feel clean after being at the beach when you are washing with salty water, although I think this is a Watamu/Kenyan coast issue and not specific to Tembo Village.
