Al Hamra
Reviewed 27 September 2012

Al Hamra, Wow! by far the most unique and luxurious place we have stayed. On entering the villa we were met by the very attentive staff and shown to our beautiful suite. Straight away we realised we were about to experience something very special. The house is serene, spacious and exotically designed but also very comfortable and has a relaxed atmosphere where you can have complete privacy or enjoy the company of others if you wish.
Our suite was very comfortable with a stylish 7ft bed which was always beautifully dressed morning and evening by one of the friendly staff. A door to a stone stairway leads to a thatched roofed open living terrese for our private use, a lovely place to take afternoon tea after a day in the sun, or for indulging in an aromatherepy massage after an exciting cycle around the forrest!
The service is superb, the Chef Janice, very imaginative, her food is dilicious especially her soups. Baya is charming, very polite and attended to our every need.
As the poolside living is so luxurious with it's indoor infinity pool and outdoor pool with elegant comfortable sunbeds, there would be no need to venture out of the grounds, but you would not want to miss, a Dhow cruise for a sundowner on the nearby lake,or swimming in the clear blue Indian Ocean which is just 5 mins walk away. We enjoyed walking along the beach, to have a cocktail as the sunset. Magical.
We went diving out on a small reef, the water was warm and clear and exceeded other dives we have made, the coral was plentiful, we saw a variety of colourful fish and several large octopus. Steve and Helen who run the dive school were excellent, they also run the cycle safari, where if you are lucky you may spot an elephant as we did!
My husband and I spent 10 glorious days at Al Hamra didn't want to leave but the attentive owners as promised booked us for a Safari in the Masai Mara before our return home, arranging everything for us. So reluctantly we packed our bags promising to return very soon to this truly unforgettable Paradise in this amazing, beautiful country.

If you were to look up Al Hamra online and see the array of shots it has aimed at pitching the property to potential guests you may think to yourself it's too good to be true. Well, see for yourself - the property is flawless in every respect and I was fortunate enough to stay there for the duration of my three week trip to Kenya.

Watamu offers an idyllic coastal retreat with white, unspoilt beaches and the tepid Indian ocean only a stones throw away from the property. Al Hamra is the perfect way to see the Kenyan coast, and the perfect trip for utter relaxation. I really cannot do the kind, warm and friendly staff enough justice in a review. They were so cheery and hospitable and ensured our stay was as comfortable and enjoyable as could be. The owner was extremely generous to both my friend and I and also went out of his way to show us Watamu and make sure we had a thoroughly unforgettable trip.

The house itself is stunning and any of the rooms it has on offer to guests are so beautiful, allowing for a comfortable and cool nights sleep in a tropical climate.

A wonderful place which I cannot recommend enough to anyone considering staying there.

We stayed at Al Hamra for our first wedding anniversary in early July. July is supposed to be off season in Kenya, but the weather was beautiful - hot days with a light breeze and cooler nights.

We have been to some amazing places in Europe Asia and America but this surpasses anywhere we have stayed in terms of luxury and high end accommodation. Stunning interior design and decor, with a highly detailed finish. Each suite has an indoors-outdoors relaxation area nestled amongst the treetops. The infinity salt plunge pool and swimming pool are beautiful in the sunshine or at sunset when the lights come on.

There is an outstanding level of service and attention to small details from freshly washed and ironed laundry to hand picked flowers from housekeeping to pre-dinner drinks and afternoon tea.
The food is delicious. Everything is homemade by the friendly cook and is healthy and plentiful. There is a banquet breakfast of fresh fruit, granola, toast and cooked breakfast; a delicious array of salads, pasta and potatoes at lunch and wonderful dinners. Desserts were exquisite and included chocolate mousse, raspberry panacotta, fruit salad and mango purée.

Watamu is on the edge of a National Marine Park, so we spent several days snorkelling on the coral reef and going on boat trips to deserted beaches. AI Hamra is also an ideal place for unwinding before or after going on safari. Our safari was made to measure by Al Hamra's travel agents in Kenya; they offered a bespoke service which was very reasonable in terms of price and we benefitted from an established relationship and local links. We were collected by our driver from Al Hamra and driven to Tsavo East (only a few hours away) where we stayed in a lodge for two nights before being taken straight from Tsavo to Nairobi.

Al Hamra is indulgent and idyllic, it is one of those rare places that it is easy to be effusive about and that it is difficult to leave.

Al Hamra is an exquisite villa on the Kenyan coast in Watamu which offers a luxurious and private retreat. The architecture is palatial and unique, the decor "African Chic". Service was sweet as I found most Kenyans. The food was excellent. The beach at Al Hamra is gorgeous, one of the best I have seen. The owners are sophisticated and very kind. Their hospitality is warming. I had an amazing and memorable stay.

Room Tip: all the rooms are the same and have a roof top area with fabulous views.

Beautiful setting, fantastic food, great atmosphere, lovely staff :) Thats what i would say in short.
Al Hamra changed my typical perception of coastal holidays. From the unique swahili inspired designs to the infinity indoor pool that channels into the larger pool giving endless calm and tranquility to the endless smiles of the wonderful staff, Al Hamra gives you a chance to unwind while offering a different coastal experience. Bravo!

Al Hamra is a private villa on the Indian Ocean coast of Kenya, in Watamu. Being a marine reserve, the beach is pristine with no (or very little) buildings, chairs, structures on the beach. We couldn't have been more spoiled at Al Hamra, with a staff of 4 to take care of us, cook for us, etc. The pools are lovely and the "honeymoon suite", or the large bedroom at the top of the house was wonderful, cool and airy in the evenings. This is the perfect place to fully relax post-safari in Kenya. Perfect for couples or a group of friends and family. I'd highly recommend it!!
