As others have mentioned this is a 3-star property and that is what you get. A very good, clearly above average but still 3-star standard at 3-star price. Service is excellent, rooms are comfortable if a little worn, the bars and restaurants probably the hotel´s best feature along with the beach itself. Nothing really to complain about except that everything NOT included in the all-inclusive package (a la carte dinners, imported alcohol, transportation, diving etc) was surprisingly expensive. Maybe that´s how it usually is but I am not used to it.
I was there in July and weather was quite bad, rainy and windy in the mornings and/or evenings and diving which I was looking forward to was not possible and some of the staff said it´s normal for that time of the year.

There are some glowing reviews of this hotel and having just come back from a 2 week stay some of these comments are entirely justified. However, it is not quite the paradise on earth that the overall impression would lead you to believe.

First the good points - the staff almost without exception are fantastic. There are too many to mention but their friendliness and helpfulness add greatly to the experience. Well organised/managed - everything works and is in place, seem to take their environmental and local community responsibilities seriously . Lovely beach which is dubbed as being in top 10 in world (wouldn't quite go that far but it's nice). Evening entertainment is not usually something we look for, or think beforehand is going to be up to much, but here it was good and varied.

Not so good points - on some days the food is great, really good for all inclusive, but on others it is average. However, unless you are really fussy you wont starve but it seemed strange that the quality could vary quite so much. We both had upset stomachs. Rooms are basic, no problem with that as this is just a 3 star hotel, but the bathrooms need an upgrade. Attitude of some long stay guests is regretable - they are pampered to by the management and staff and most annoyingly hog the sunbeds and parasols on the beach and seem to think that they own the place - if any of them reading this - CHILL OUT!

Other points worth noting - journey from Mombasa airport is long, don't forget to take dollars for entry and departure taxes, beach boys are off putting to a relaxing stroll, safaris are viable option from here but do some research beforehand on what you want to do. If organising holiday well in advance a good option would be to go on safari straight from Mombasa. Try and take plenty of small notes for tips and stuff for the kids/school.

Well where do we start ? Turtle bay is perfect.
This place has to be seen to be believed. We arrived at Mombasa airport from Manchester tired and very hot. The process on arrival is slow to say the least. You have to queue to get your entry Visa and "Hakuna Matata" is very much the way. There is only one speed and it is slow.
Visas can be obtained in advance in the UK and this means that you dont queue at the airport. however if you have a coach transfer to your hotel then you still have to wait for everyone else to get theirs before you leave.
The long wait and 2 hour transfer is well worth it. As soon as you step inside Turtle bay, A drink and a cold face towel are waiting and nothing could be more perfect from that moment on.
We were travelling with 2 children our son who is 10 and our daughter who is 6. We all shared a bedroom and although there were 4 of us it actually wasnt that cramped. The Club rooms are big and if there are only 2 of you then they would be more than adequate.
We dumped the luggage and ventured straight out to have a look round the hotel and facilities. Please dont expect a 5 * hotel. This place is not that, but it is absolutley perfect and lets face it I could have stayed in a Manchester hotel if i had wanted flat screen TV's and His and hers bidets !!.
There are no TV's in the rooms and that was very welcome, we were on holiday and i didnt want to watch what was happening in the UK thank you very much. There is a TV lounge and UK footy matches were a regular feature.
The staff in the hotel are above and beyond the highest praise. They are gracious, polite, hardworking, efficient and happy and will do absolutely anything for you. One evening my husband and I dined in the Blue Turtle a la carte restaurant and the sea food chowder was so delicious that i asked the chef, Daniel, for the recipe. Not only did he give me the recipe but made me the soup again for lunch the following day. He made a point of remembering my name and speaking to me at every oppertunity. Thank you Daniel.
Many thanks go to Patience (kids club), Ratibou (bar) and Pete at the fun base who all made our holiday special. The kids club was great and my 2 were enjoying the facilities so much I hardly saw them. The activities and movies were age appropriate and I felt the whole time that they were in totally safe hands.
The fun base team provide entertainment for everyone who wants it and they are enthusiastic and make sure everyone enjoys themselves.
The food was excellent and varied and very healthy. (although the 4 o'clock pancakes broke the rules somewhat) The entertainment both daily and at night time was good and also educational on some occasions. Damien the hotel general manager was often around and about and made a point of speaking to as many guests as he could. I actually felt like i was part of a great big family rather than just another holiday maker.
The Pizza restaurant is good and although it states that reservations should be made, unless it is a big party, that is hardly ever the case.
Outside the hotel the beach is paradise. The sand is powder white and the sea blue and green. The tide goes out leaving loads of rock pools teeming with life. The beach boys are very friendly and will show you around the rock pools and point out all the fish. We met a guy called Joseph who actually runs his own safari comany Kenyasafarijambo.com he was superb and spent hours showing the children loads of interesting wild life. He explained what everything was and he was really knowledgable and passionate about the conservation issues. He was polite and friendly. We booked a couple of trips with him and he delivered them as promised. They were cheaper than the hotel prices and just as good and there was that bit more flexibility with him if we wanted to stop off somewhere not on the agnda then that was ok. We went to Gedi, the Crocodile farm and Malindi with Joseph and also on a snorkling trip. Dont be afraid to haggle for prices of things on the beach. Its good fun and the local people expect it. Never pay the first price offerered.
Africa is one fantastic experience and Turtle Bay beach club is a perfect place to experience it. We will definately go back again it was the best holiday we have had.

A great journey from the airport gives you the 'feel' for your arrival in Africa, great numbers of people of all ages walking along quiet roads interspersed with many cycles. The hotels encountered on route are an oasis to life just outside the gates where you have to accept that life in Kenya is tough in comparison! However, the people you meet and encounter are very happy and wherever I journeyed I did not encounter any animosity.

You must leave the reort and venture into the village and see behind the facade of your hotel. It really is humbling to see families in and around their houses getting on with their day to day life, reflect on the abundance of food on offer, and wasted at your all inclusive resort!

Through research on Trip advisor I made arrangements for a 2 day/1 night safari with Abdul of Tunda tours. He came to the hotel and we sorted out the safari, he also did some currency exchange at a favourable rate! For £150 it was fantastic, far exceeding my expectations of wildlife encountered and vast distances covered around Tsavo East. Stayed at Voi Wildlife Lodge which was great, what a restaurant overlooking the waterhole with buffalo and elephant wandering to and from.

Within 24 hours I had viewed lion, cheetah, elephant, giraffe, crocodile, hyena, buffalo, warthog, ostrich, hippo, many varied gazelle and monkeys, and many more, a truly memorable experience.

Once you leave your resort you soon leave the tarmac and encounter tracks where residents emerge from the undergrowth, many families barefoot, happily accepting gifts from the travellers on their way to and from the Tsavo. We encountered basic living which cried out to me 'you're in Africa.'

This was 9/10 hours from Manchester, escaping the big freeze in mid winter, at the resort, fine South African wine (from a box) accompanied the more than adequate food served, I am a 'picky' eater but found the food substantial and at times very good., the soups were outstanding!

This was a truly great trip!
