A group of friends and I visited in March for a fishing trip. Two of us had stayed at Hemmingway's before but we were persuaded to give Ocean Sports a try. I have to say it was a great recommendation and we were glad we tried it.

At our arrival we were greeted by Florient and his team and quenched our thirst with a welcome fruit cocktail. We spent the first night in the Hotel complex and everything was clean and well air conditioned.

We opted to move into the Beach House for the remainder of our trip and although rustic it was again spotless and well air conditioned. The room service was flawless and we found the cleaning team to be effective, reliable and honest.

We ate at the restaurant every night and also some lunches and breakfasts. We found the food superb and fresh at all times. This was a mixture of seafood and other. The highlight was our last lunch of Ginger Crab. We highly recommend it. I am from a coastal town in South Africa and have not had better. We have to make special mention of our waiter Hare and chef King Charles who were superb in the way they treated and fussed over us.

The fishing was fair and we were always kept well fed and hydrated by the resort boat packs.
The bill fish eluded us but we were lucky enough to witness the second Grander Blue Marlin caught close to us.

Well done to Florient and your team, we are already planning our return.

We used Ocean Sports as our 'local' when we rented a house in Watamu for a month; the location is superb with great views of the Indian Ocean, the food was good quality particularly the sea food on the specials board, and there was a good friendly atmosphere in the place especially during the six nations rugby tournament.

A wonderful spot and could be a beautiful hotel but in the typically Kenyan way it is let down by the service. The rooms are basic but comfortable, the pool area is very tired and needs a good clean and lick of paint. The main bar/restaurant area is lovely but the service is appalling! Out of the four mornings we were there they only got our tea/coffee order correct once, breakfast tables were not even set up when we wanted to eat and the waiter service was awful. Food items were unavailable but you aren't told that until they serve your partners food and absolutely no attention to detail.
However, having said all that we had a lovely stay and the location is perfect.

Thank you for taking the time to write a review, it is always helpful to hear what our guests enjoyed and where we can make improvements. We are very sorry that you found the service to be slow. We are working on this issue and also plan to renovate the swimming pool after the Easter holidays. I hope that you can give Ocean Sports another chance and when you are next here you notice a big improvement.

We stayed at Ocean Sports Resort for 5 nights in October 2013 and we had the most wonderful time. My 12 year old son loved the on-site diving option (he completed his advanced PADI there and it was a super experience; very professional) and my daughter loved the swimming pool. The rocky pools on the beach are second to none - we found moray eels, puffer fish and all kinds of wonderful things residing in them. We were looked after fabulously by the owners and the staff and the food was really wonderful - the best tuna sashimi that I have ever tasted. We have stayed at a couple of other places on the coast since and have not found a better place yet for value for money. Ok, so maybe the place might need updating at some point but the rooms were comfortable, the air conditioning works (at least they have ac unlike some other places), there are fresh water showering facilities (I have learned not to take this for granted on the Kenyan coast) and for the money we paid, it really was so worth the trip!

We have been coming here for years. Went through a flat spot in 2012. Now new French manager and wife are turning things around with a friendly welcome for all. Most staff have been there a while and are very helpful, if not the swiftest around, but may be this is what makes it one of the most relaxing spots on the Kenya North Coast! Dining overlooking the moonlit Indian Ocean, with a gentle sea breeze to provide the a/c, is very special and the food is good too!

If you want a Kenyan beach holiday with a local atmosphere this is the place. The good times had here by so many folk over the years radiate from the walls. The style is relaxed and unpretentious, just what we like and the staff friendly and genuinely hospitable but never intrusive. One can always find minor faults, but here you are in the right place, and any rough edges just add to the local character - if you want perfection - go to the Dorchester - don't go to Africa. The managers Emilie and husband Florian, are a constant gentle presence and thus always available to assist.

The house wine is excellent and all the bar prices reasonable, so you can 'relax' without clocking up a massive bill.

The food is good; if you catch a fish it will be superbly cooked for you and the chef has mastered the art of scrambled eggs - a personal plus for us.

Locals on the beach, whilst they may try to engage you, won't pester you if you politely make clear you are not interested. We made enquiries about local security and heard of no incidents of serious crime. We felt completely safe, the staff can be trusted, and the Somali pirate threat is history and didn't come this far south anyway.

The Watamu coast is a magical place. There are others of course in Kenya which is famous for its beaches, but we think this is the jewel in the crown. We will be regulars.

Room Tip: Speak to Emilie and give her your preferences. She will be happy to talk you through the options.
